Title: Music Programs for Electronic music.Need suggestions
Post by: Unicron! on June 26, 2004, 07:52:29 AM
I am looking for good electronic music programs. What do you people suggest?
So far I ve tried Fruityu Loops but I couldnt get accustomed to it.The tutorial didnt help much and the sounds arent that good.It also takes too much of the CPU.
I ve been told that Reason is one of the greatest but its too expensive to buy.It worths more than $400
Tried to "steal" it from p2p programs but there is still a long way to go since I am using a 56k modem and its 1.2 GB :D.

Any other recommendations?

I use Cubase and Sound Forge with a Ensoniq ASR-X sampler/re-sampler.

Pretty much all you need. Don\'t listen to all the dorks at guitar center. You only really need one program for sequencing, and one program for editing.

Or you could be creative and just whistle.
Gee, bet that never occured to you. did it? DORK!

Hmmm cubase.A friend of  mine gave me Cubase. He didnt know how to get it to work.I couldnt either. The thing doesnt write any notes

Do you know where I can get tutorials on it?

Btw:I found out about Reason in a forum about electronic music..I did a search and found the official site.It seems many people see it as the best program available.Even a member of the Prodigy band thinks its the best(or probably an effort to creat some hype).I downloaded some samples to see what it can do and I must say. This is one powerful program.

Ofcourse nothing beats playing on a good synthesizer.

I d be glad to hear recomendations about good synthesizers as well :).I might find a job soon and collect some money to get one.

Unicron,
you might wanna visit OTS

OTS labs (http://otslabs.com/)

I use their Ots CD scratch 1200 ; virtual turntable software and it\'s free and only about 1.3 mb    Scratch along your fav tunes !

They have other nice audio software too.

Thats cause Cubase doesnt write notes, it plays them. You need to be using something WITH Cubase, like a synth or a sample or something.

Cubase is a sequencing program, you tell it what your useing to make the sounds, or where the sounds are, and it plays them in the song where you tell it to.

Do a Google search for Cubase tutorials, you should be able to find something. Although there have been many, thick books written on how to use Cubase.

It\'s a super powerful program.

You mean I have to connect something to my computer which will give input to the Cubase to play?
Title: Music Programs for Electronic music.Need suggestions
Post by: Luke on June 26, 2004, 02:08:21 PM
Yeah pretty much. Basically Cubase doesnt really make sounds, it just plays the sounds from an outside source.

The outside source can be anything, from a synth you have running into your PC through MIDI to a drum loop sample you have on your computer.

OK here. Reason, is by far one of the best quality programs you could use. If you dont want that (or to fork up all the cash) Fruityloops (newest version is 4.something i forgot). It takes a while to learn how to use it properly and to get quality out of your music. I use that the most.

Id be more than happy to post my music but alas we cant load them up here and i dont know how the hell to have them hosted on a website. Whatever you do, dont get Acid Pro if you want to make ORIGINAL music. All you do there is take sliced sounds and organize them into your own thing.

As for other tools etc. Sound forge is ok, you might want a beat slicer (cant think of the name) because some of the programs dont come with them. Uhmmm.... i know i have more but i dont remember them all. Cakewalk used to be really popular but i havent heard much about the new ones if there are in fact new ones.

Any other questions that need detail you can pm me. I remember talking about this sort of thing a long time ago but nobody knew much so it just bombed.

EDIT: ok i didnt see that you tried Fruityloops but seriously you just have to learn. The sounds may sound shitty but you just have to learn how to work them into perfection. They keep them unrefined so that you can do more of your own touches.

The Fruity Loops version I have is 3.56.I ll install it again and experiment with it more. The tutorials inside fruity loops didnt help much. For example it shows some effects and a sample using these effects and it sais that you can do it with that or this but it doesnt say how.Which gets annoying.
I need more detailed tutorials

Thanks for the info.I ll pm you if I have further questions :)

Oh right. That was a pretty decent version. I think i have 4.5 or 4.1.5 or some crap. Now they call it FL Studio not just FL. Id give you the file but considering thats ileagal (and we all know how some of you mods feel about that) and you have a 56k, i dont think its going to happen.

but if you need, i can answer basically all ?\'s you have on it and even some neat tips.

I installed it from the beginning.I just gave up experimenting with it again a few minutes ago :p
I find a few problems with it but the ironic thing is I dont know how to explain the problems I am encountering to get any answers :p
Damn.
What I need is a step by step tutorial on how to create a certain piece( like the sample that demonstrates what you can get from the program for example) so I can realize better the logic of the program and how to solve a few issues that might be encountered during the middle of the work.I ll do a search over the net for a few tutorials

I ll keep experimenting with it and in case I find a problem I can explain (my English suck btw) I ll let you know

Thanks for the offer though.I appreciate it a lot :)

I wouldnt really disagree with you, but depending on what you want out of it, it can do some pretty good things. Why  you say that is another thing. But since you didnt say much i guess there isnt much to retaliate with.

Cakewalk always seemed too multi-purpose to me,  If I want audio sequencing and editing, thats what I want. I\'m makin\' music here not commercials.

Although I have heard good things about the newest versions of it, I have yet to try it in the past couple years.

I\'ve always been a Cubase guy.

right now, I am slaving my laptop running reason via midi to my main comp running nuendo (sorta like an upgraded cubase...I think, I can\'t really tell the diff...) also use audiomulch to tweak beats and shit, and sound forge to cut my loops & samples up....

Also have a quattro to run audio into nuendo and monitor recorded tracks.... will post a pic of my setup later....

I\'ve been using Buzz Machines for the past year or so.  It hasn\'t been updated for a few years, but I hear a new program is being built off of the Buzz Machines code that will bring it more up to date and make it more user friendly.  http://www.buzzmachines.com/

I\'ve also been using Microsoft DirectMusic Producer.   It\'s not bad if you don\'t mind midi-quality output (The only way I can figure out how to save the songs is to export them to a midi, then converts that to a wav, then convert that to a mp3.  lol.  Kind of a hastle.)

Fruit Loops is great for newbs I hear.  Don\'t listen to the l337 music composers bashing Fruit Loops because it\'s too \'basic\'.  People have to start somewhere, and shouldn\'t have to go out and buy a 400 dollar music program just to find out they don\'t really like composing music. ;)

I loved fruityloops before I had reason........check out the beep mapper, and be sure to f*ck around with the delays on the sample window, there\'s some cool modulation there...

lol "so excited" he says. Thats how i felt. Told you ya bum. It can do great things if you just learn to work it. And actually i wouldnt say fruityloops is basic Iron. I mean i know the other programs but you can get exremely technical on FL. Some of the demo songs in the newer versions can demonstrate that. Fairly impressive.

And yes Reason is great. But for him, fl is more than enough. I really wish i could post my music damnit!!!

Not too bad considering you just really started getting into it. I guess id have to hear the high quality finished version but id definately say that you have improved greatly in the little time you started working on FL.

I dont know what everybody else would say but if i remember correctly, you didnt really know how to use it well a few days back.

One suggestion that i have off the top of my head is clean up and tweak the drum kits. Very bland right now.

Damn. I know most of you probably arent interested but i just went through a lot of my cousin and I\'s old stuff and some of the semi new stuff and we were pretty good. I have to get back into making music bad. Its been almost a year. Sad really. Ill try and test out my magic next week. Im going out of town tomorrow.

Well here is a bit of our more Rap oriented stuff. We go all across the board in terms of genres but i just happened to see this one and its not too big. Its a bit repettitive because its not the finished version (where that is i dont know) and it was meant for a background. The most recent version has more crisp gunshots and it sounds like a flatline after the shots. Pretty kool shit.

Hopefully this works.

EDIT: Damnit its a bit too big. (1.05megs) : (

Yeah I couldnt do almost a thing previously.I dont even understand how I managed to improve so greatly in such a small period of time.It just came smoothly.I woke up one morning with inspiration and voila.
I still need work though.

You are right about the drum kits.I am still very very weak in that part.

well there are special ways of organizing your crap but to keep it simple, just use multiples of the same sound channel and tweak them differently. Its the easiest and most basic way for you art the moment.

Shit. I forgot to send Chizz my songs. I guess ill do that now

But thats what I do.For example I create pattern1 that plays a specific part with one specific instrument and then I click on the FX shortact to add the effects I want to that pattern. But all the patterns for example 2,3,4,5 etc use the effects I added on pattern1
I just want only pattern1 to use them.
I have this problem with effects like Fruity Chorus and Fruity 7 Band EQ

And harry up with those songs ;)

Oh i think i see your probelm. All your instruments or w/e are all on the same effect number. When you put fx on. Make sure you dont put them on master or 1. Start on like 2 or 3 and then make the instrument you want to have that effect on, the same number as the effect. Ill try and post a pic if the description doesnt help.

Oh. and just pm me your email and ill send the song i couldnt send.

Because of this thread, I am now running Reason 2.5, and I bought a couple of books on it to get myself up to speed.  I\'m planning to purchase a Roland GI-20 and GK-2AH MIDI guitar pickup, install it in my Stratocaster, and use it as an input device.  I am a guitar player, so I\'m pretty sure using a keyboard to perform music would drive me crazy.

What I\'m planning to do is build up some drum and bass tracks using Reason, then perform some harmonies using the MIDI guitar, and assign them to a synth or whatever.  Then I eventually want to be able to play back the Reason sound file and record a live guitar track over the top of it using a digital audio recording program that interfaces with Reason using ReWire.

I was planning to use Adobe Audition 1.5 as the recording program, but that sort of fell through.  I might still invest in it, but I\'m thinking it might be overkill.  Do any of you have a preference on a good audio recording & mixing program that is ReWire compatible?

Heh, that\'s kinda cool Unicron.  Mega techno; even more than the real song, I think.  :)  I saved it in my ITunes folder and added your name as "artist" in the ID3 tag.

I reckon most of these programs like  Reason, Fruity Loops, and others really work best when building up techno / electronic music like this.  Therefore, I think I\'m going to be stretching things by using it for the kind of progressive rock music I have in mind.

Oh well, we\'ll see how it goes.

Thats probably one of the best compliments I ever got :p

Its true that these programs are developed mostly with electronic music in mind judging from what I ve heard so far from other people\'s work. But they do a pretty good job for other genres too (especially from Reason I believe since its a more proffesional and quality program) .Also judging from Chemical Brothers and Prodigy that had rock characteristics in some of their music  I am pretty confident you will achieve what you are looking for since you are a guitar player and you know about music :)

I\'m just messing with the drum machine right now, using a "rock" patch set.  It seems that if you carefully adjust the dynamics of each hit, you can make it sound quite lifelike; not like our typical preconceived notion of a drum machine at all.  It\'s pretty cool.

Im just dropping in here for a bit but with reason you can definately work something out on your geetaur and make something nice with it.

Theres actually a demo song on one of the newer fruityloops called taken where the guy imported his guitar playing into it. Its pretty damn good too. Im surprised that the quality was so good (im sure it still could have been better too).

try Nuendo...it rewires flawlessly to Reason, and supports a ton of USB audio devices... I got a Midiman Quattro (on sale at http://www.musiciansfriend.com ) 4-in, 4-out audio @ a bunch of different sample rates.... plus you can use all VST plug-ins...

I meant that you would have a lot of fun with FL 3.5 because some of the synths that you were trying to use, sound 10 times better in this engine called Sytrus in the newer versions of FL.

The only thing about it, is that is hogs a lot of cpu power.

heh.You cant imagine how much disappointed I am with my work because I feel too restrained with the FL version I have.
There is a 19 year old that posted in a Cyprus Clubbing site\'s forum a low quality of his earky work if you are interested.

http://cyborgx.wotshire.ws/music/new/hE_public1-2.mp3

Here is one.He is using FL4 as a base program and a producer in Austria he knows (I think they are relatives) is sending him plug ins.He is pretty good.

There are already Cypriot producers that are becoming known abroad as well.A track called United by Harry C was performed a few days ago by DJs in UK.Also check out Kuffdam and Plant\'s work whose tracks are even remixed by Paul Van Dyk(Paul has performed near my area with other Cypriot DJs a week ago)

If you are refering to my sample

1)I am not a musician

2)I am using an old version of FL

4)The sample was done in few minutes just to pass my time

5)I dont know who the f*ck James Brown is.

How many of you record music?  My friend has this small mixing board he plugs into his computer and we have fun just screwing around (in the shower).

Thanks for the recommendations, I\'ll tell him about Cubase.

Yeah cubase sx is the shit. I have Reason 2.5 slaved to it, with a quattro usb input, a tube mic preamp, and a Radium 49 usb keyboard. You can basically do anything you want. Make some sequenced keyboard traks in Reason, the track plays in cubase while you record, timestrech, do whatever.

Yet I never go there.....

This is what a rock band looks like in Cyprus:

 HAHAHAHAHAHAH good one Coredweller. But I think they are from Crete or another area in Greece.Pontos I think its called.Atleast thats how we call that area in Greek.

Not that they differ much from Cyprus traditional clothing some people used to where 3 or 4 decades ago.

Hey mm.Do you know Mikis Theodorakis?

I dont give a shit who the godfather of soul is.Atleast I am on teh other side of the planet.

But you should have been ashamed for your bad manners and arrogance

Well.Unlike you I am not a redneck that lives in a 1st world country insulting others USA and not only residents for no reason.I am the opposite of you that lives in a supposed "3rd world country"
I bet the only country you ve been too is the USA and the only things you know about are US movies, games and US music.Learn first what REAL culture is since what you ve been calling real culture and was insulting other members for their likings was as "pop culture" as theirs from the first place.
And go find some friends. With such attitude I doubt if you have any.

You have ruined my thread just to show off your "stance"

Thank you very much for quarelling and insulting me for no reason mm

I know cyprus is an ancient place, and I want to go to Greece soon. Are there any travel restrictions? Would there be much hatred towards Americans? Are there many ruins to visit? And I just want you to know that my comments are good-natured , and not meant to insult directly. These guys should realize that since you are posting on this board, you probably know at least one more language than they you. ;)

You didnt offend me :)

I suggest going to Greece if you want to see ancient ruins and museums. There are a lot more there and ancient history in Greece is HUUUGGEE.

There is no anti-americanism in Greece. This was a wrong assumprtion made by others against me.But thats a misunderstanding.

I have that Green line6 delay as well, but the dj I hang with borrowed it for a gig. I\'m actually getting ready to renovate my studio, and redo the monitors. (going to the music store to buy new monitors after I type this....)

BTW, lotta sexy guitars in that rack. I wish I would have kept all the ones I had over the years.

thanks for the nice comments but that room and equipment isn\'t mine.  4 of my friends are guitar whores and that guitar rack is a collection of 3 guys\' guitars.

What did you guys think of our song?  I\'m 1/2 the vocals.  I think it shows off my range.
