Vivendi Universal (Sierras boss) has shut down Sierra, they will complete their games that are in production tho, here is the article from gigex.com:
The lights go out at old-school game company, Sierra, as Vivendi restructures its business.
More depressing news for the industry, Vivendi Universal Games has cut 350 staff and shut down Seattle-based Sierra. The venerable games company created some of the most popular action and adventure games in the 80\'s. The Sierra brand will live on in name only and projects tied to the Sierra pipeline, Half-Life 2, Ground Control II and Tribes: Vengeance are already being developed by other teams within Vivendi. Also affected by the restructuring, the Hoyle brand of card and board games have been canceled.
"Restructuring the organization and reducing our cost base are necessary to improve our operating effectiveness and profitability," said VU Games CEO Bruce Hack, in as terse a manner as possible. "This constitutes another important step in our turnaround plan aimed to better position the company for growth."
Along with VU Games restructuring, the game company is prepping up for profitability with a powerful lineup for the second half of 2004. VU Games is looking for some higher revenues with titles like World of Warcraft, Spyro: A Hero\'s Tail and the well-received The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

*sigh* Sayonara, noble warrior of PC gaming.

Yeah, all I hear about is how the game industry is getting ready for a huge boom... But shit like this has been happening for the past 6 months left and right.

It seems as if a lot of old giants are biting the bullet, making way for the "new wave of the future." Its damn stupid and doesnt prove to me that gaming is going anywhere. Perhaps its one of those noah\'s ark type of situations but i still dont see anything positive coming from the closure of these companies. Its all business now. It has nothing to do with the games.
Seems like the only venerable people you KNOW wont go away are EA.

That\'s kind of pushing it.
In general, it is sad to see old developers/publishers (Sierra, MicroProse, etc..) fade away when new publishers are putting out mostly mediocre garbage. The only recently popular dev/pub that I really like is Ubisoft. It\'s about time they got some respect. Rockstar.. meh. I think GTA is brilliant but besides GTA their games have been mediocre. Then, you have a whole sea of wannabes pumping out dreck like Enclave. Fun, but not that fun.. definitely "mature" though..

Yeah id agree on Ubisoft. I wouldnt say they are the greatest studio ever but they have been polishing their act up and getting some pretty damn good titles out there.
Rockstar... well thats a tough one for me because they do put out some fairly good games aside from the GTA series (at least IMO).

Good riddance. I hated Sierra with their stupid update tools and all the other intrusive stuff they force on you. I especially hated that stupid sound test they always make you do. It\'s like they never got over their DOS days. It\'s not like they were crucial in making any of their published titles any better. Quite the opposite.

Good riddance to Sierra.
Ubisoft is a great developer.
Rockstar is a one trick pony, whose success will dwindle down to nothing, unless they find a way to reinvent the GTA series, which is growing old.

Uhm... have you not read anything on San Andreas? Youre either retarded, misinformed, or just not giving it a chance... yet.
