Title: Another New Car
Post by: GigaShadow on July 05, 2004, 01:52:01 PM
I know Ace is going to hate me, but the Jetta had to go back soon and the Mach 1 was just not practicle - so I decided to buy an Audi A4 1.8T Quattro - fully loaded with a 6MT.

Nice choice Giga.  What can you say about Audis?  They are awesome cars, even if Audiworld is a crappy forum in my opinion.  I\'ve driven my neighbor\'s S4, and it was a great experience.  I liked the build quality, and there\'s something about the gauges that is immediately appealing.  There ought to be some very simple mods that would increase power without endangering your warranty.

It\'s a good thing you didn\'t get the tiptronic automatic transmission.  I drove a friend\'s VW in Minnesota last year; I think it was a Passat wagon with tiptronic and it was boring as hell.  Have you test driven the CVT version of the A4?  I suspect I wouldn\'t like it, but I\'ve been curious about what it feels like.

Thanks, yeah the automatic version felt like a dog.  You are right about mods... APR makes a chip for $499 installed and best of all their corporate HQ is in Auburn!  I talked to them on Friday and they told me to bring it in and they would handle it.  It will increase HP to 200 and TQ to 231lb/ft.  Not bad for $500.

There really is no comparison between this car and the Mustang - two totally different cars and I wish I could have had both... maybe some day.  I also have to say this buying experience was the most pleasurable I have ever had.  No games, no seedy salesman... just really nice.

You sold the Mustang?

Looks awesome, very sleek and I love that color.  One car everyone is looking at is the Subaru Legacy GT.  STi engine, turbo power, AWD, and around $25k.

^^Pick of the STi version that just came out in Japan.

Definitely not as luxorious as the Audi though. ;)

Yes Titan I sold the Mustang.  :(

I like the Subaru\'s though - they are definitely more sporty looking than the standard A4.  I sort of wish they would have had an Ultra Sport package equipped A4 on the lot (18 inch rims and other assorted aero package stuff that is very similiar to the S4).  Other than that this one had everything I wanted - Ebony Leather interior, lighting package including Xeon headlights and the Infotainment package with the Bose stereo and XM Radio.  I wanted OnStar as well, but those are hard to find on A4\'s.  So basically I settled on the Sport Package - same suspension just 17 inch rims and no aero package.

I also just activated my XM radio - now to figure out how to get rid of this America Left station. ;)

Those are 17\'s?  I keep hearing on the Maxima forum I visit people don\'t like their new 18\'s because the road just feels too bumpy, and then there are the rim damage stories.

How are some companies able to make a smooth ride with 18s stock?

They look bigger!?  Yeah they are 17\'s.  I don\'t know how the 18\'s are, but from what I have read on VW Vortex they actually decrease the performance by having 18\'s on the 1.8T\'s.

That\'s odd.  18" wheels are stock on a number of cars, and no one complains about them.  People who say the ride is too bumpy or it\'s too easy to damage their wheel are evidently not prepared to operate a vehicle like that.  You can\'t just nod off and drive over curbs like you did in your SUV.

I agree that bigger wheels generally decrease performance, and to me they usually look idiotic.  I went from 16" to 17" on my car, and I think it\'s just on the verge of looking stupid at that size.  A bigger car with a bigger body like the Audi would look much more natural with 17" wheels.

I can\'t believe you traded your Mach!  You must have made out pretty good with the huge discount you got when you bought that thing... or did the depreciation ruin it for you?

To honest I broke about even.  I was a bit sad to see the Mach go after such a short time, but an Audi is an Audi... for everyday driving you really can\'t compare the two. :)

Audis are nice cars, that\'s for sure. You made a good choice. AWD assurance in rain and snow. Now...just coz you can move in the rain and snow better than 2WD cars...you still stop just like them. :) Too many horror stories of AWD owners taking it too fast in the rain but realized too late about the stopping part.

you stated the jetta had to go back..were you leasing the jetta? and i don\'t know your situation and this may be the kid in me but i feel if you can afford it you shouls at least get the car or keep the car you want...it\'s just a man thing for me..and cars are like a man\'s 2nd wife & adult toy..

in other words if i have a family i\'m gonna make sure i have a whip for the family (suv) but that car that\'s personally mine? it\'s gotta be something that i like...i guess it helps too that my wife really isn\'t into cars like that & stated she just wants a suv for the family...as it stands now i have the sc400 which isn\'t a family car by any means..but that thing handles like a dream & i love it..

for what it\'s worth congrats! it a nice lookin whip..:)

*almost forgot the other car i have is a metro (excellent on gas) but it\'s pretty small & it gets the job done for the family now,..but i will be lookin into getting maybe a used expedition or tahoe..

Nice!  Gotta love the Audis - I tune them, work on them, love em all day every day.

If you need any mods, help, anything let me know - I admin/moderate a board http://www.audizine.com

Cheers!

I only glanced at audizine.com briefly, but I can already tell it is immensely superior to Audiworld.  All hail VBulletin.  I hope Audiworld dies a swift and painful death.

Only small problem: When I load audizine.com, it generates an error:  "A Runtime Error has occured.  Do you wish to Debug?  Line: 1, Error: Expected \';\'

My company PC is running IE 6.0.2800

I was waiting for someone to say sweet.

Anyway, APR is located right down the road from me Kirath - good bunch of guys.  I am thinking about going that route for now.  Tell me what you think.

Yes Ace, I miss the Mustang. :(

I\'m sorry, dude, a MACH is on my wish list. The "not practical" bit is very common with Mustangs and for someone who has a family and it\'s completely understandable.

Good luck with the new car!

If I could have had both I would have - I even seriously thought about keeping the Jetta after the lease was up, but a $13000 risidual on it with NO warranty just wasn\'t worth it.

No, I have the Quattro which is all wheel drive, but there is a FWD version.

ah.

understeering. blah. better than FF though. Of course 4x4 always works out best in the end if you factor in the weather.

I love driving the Outback in the winter while everyone else is stuck.

Good shit.

Don\'t eva! mention APR to me - I don\'t wanna say they\'re a bad company, But I worked for AWE (their main competitor) for awhile and I\'m still good friends with them.

People like APR and I can\'t say they\'re terrible, but I can say I think your money would be better spent somewhere else.  But being APR is so close, any issues you might have you can drive right to their door and yell as loud as you want.  So that could be beneficial.

That\'s like saying, Man they suck, but since they are close you may as well go with them, but they suck.

I have heard a lot of other people state they don\'t like the "people" who work and run APR, but their product isn\'t bad.  Once I get one installed I will be ready to race you vid! ;)

Well videoholic - these little girls get together, chat online, talk about who they like and who they don\'t like, some talk trash, some act important.  I don\'t take sides.  I know some good people who enjoyed their products from APR and some who have not.  I have never done business with them, so I can\'t say from experience.  I was only trying to slightly pursade Giga into doing some research, thats the best thing he can do.

And like I said GigaShadow before, Audizine is a good place to start.

I haven\'t done anything to my car.  I don\'t want to make it sound like a ricer.  Once you throw an intake and exhaust on the thing it just sounds like crap.  My car is fast enough for a while for me.

I can cruise at 110 and it feels like I\'m going 70.  It\'s just so damn smooth at high speeds.  That\'s enough for me.

I have been a member VW Vortex for a while so I got all my info there, but I like Audizine - nice clean forums.  I will register in the next day or two.
