It appears I ended up with one of the xbox systems with a thompsan drive. It died tonight, and now all I get is you have a dirty or damaged disk. Tried cleaning it to no avail. What a POS!!!!
-
Mine is starting to get flaky playing DVDs, won\'t read some of the ones I get from Netflix. Well, I\'ve been using the hell out of it & the used prices are decent so no biggie.
Check out forums\' F/S sections to see the prices on some bundles out there.
-
Dude ! That f**kin\' bites.
Are you goin\' to bother replacing it?
:(
You know how bad mine is, I keep waiting for it to die.
-
Heh...mine died over 2 years ago because of that filthy drive. Prices have gone down enough so I will be purchasing another Xbox when Halo 2 is released:D
-
*caresses fully operational 3 1/2 year old ps2 gently* :D
-
My PS2 is slowly dying. It\'s starting to freeze up on occassion or simply not respond to a disc. I\'ve put hundreds of hours on it though so I\'m not suprised.
-
While man that sucks. I hate when consoles go bad.
There only 149.99 but damn you could put that towards some choice games.
-
Sad to hear about this. The New Xbox Drives are better now. It loads faster too. :D
-
At this point I fear getting another Thompson drive. Is there anyway to tell when I buy another one to make sure it is a new model, or one that has been on the shelf for a year or two?
It was strane how it died. It came up with one damage or dirty disk error, and then after that. That is the error I received on every game after that. I have been taking it very easy on this drive for almost a year. IMHO the ps2 DRE\'s are minor compared to the xbox drive errors. I know LIC is in close to the same shape as me.
The thing that annoys me most is premium content I paid for on x-box live. From what I understand it will have to be paid for again. This is the biggest pisser to me. THat and the fact some game saves can\'t be transferred off of the x-box. Thanks Tecmo.
Suppose I may buy one, and then open it up in the car, and look to see what kind of drive it has. If it is a thompson then trot right back in and exchange it.
-
just buy a new dvd-rom and replace the thompson one. no need to buy a new console.
EDIT: I mean a new Xbox DVD-Rom drive and not a PC one. I remember seeing somewhere that you can buy new Xbox dvd-roms.

From what I\'ve seen they don\'t even sell any of the Thompson drives anymore. I would also hardly call the PS2 drive errors minor.

PS2s get errors with CDs mostly. But most dont notice since 99% of the games are released in DVD format
-
As Capcom said, I know mine is in pretty bad shape. It randomly freezes and quite often it won\'t boot up due to disc errors .. Can\'t clean it, etc, so I know it\'s a faulty drive.
I bash Sony for their shoddy consoles and now I will bash MS.....Shoddy ass....piece..of..shit..

Well thats odd cause mine was the opposite then it finally all went to hell. Personally I think it\'s one steaming pile of shit, with the Thompson xbox drive not too far behind.
-
Mine still has problems only with CDs.Doesnt steam yet :p
Others have their PS2s longer than mine and they have no problems. They even had their consoles modded to play pirated games and mine that isnt modded has problems

It all depends on the luck of the draw. Some people have had there ps2 less than I had mine and theres have all quit on them.
My xbox has the thompson one an it is fine. So does my cousin and nephew and all fine. They say playing the ps2 standing up can cause problems. My friends since the day ps2 came out has always stood his ps2 up. I told him to get the stand but he does not see a reason to get one. When it will stand up without one.
And he has had no problems.
It\'s the luke of the draw I tell you.

You probably just forgot to put it in the freezer from time to time, it\'s your own fault really.....

darn beavers eating the wires again. Happens all the time.

My first PS2\'s CD reader died after 3 years of tons of usage. I actually still have the old Ps2... decided to hold onto it just incase I see some other use for it. hah... maybe ill buy a bunch of bad PS2\'s and make my own super computer ;)
-
*Looks lovingly at old Xbox that works perfectly fine*
*Looks menacingly at POS PS2 that has stopped working twice and now refuses to play any DVDs*
-
My PS2 has stopped working many times. Sometimes it doesn\'t read CD\'s. Then DVD\'s, then certain games, then all games.
Though, it\'s not that much trouble to open it up and clean the lense, so it\'s still running perfectly. :)
My XBox? I wouldn\'t know, I\'ve been lending it to a friend so he can play DVD\'s on it for the last 6 months. I assume it\'s working fine. :) Man I\'m dying to play KotOR and Ninja Gaiden.
-
Are you f*cking out of your mind?Get that XBOX back and start PLAYING!!!! :p
-
My PS2 died on me. I took out my screw driver, opened it and changed some laser thing (I had to turn the dial. I saw it online that it fixed Disc Read Errors). It works perfectly now.
-
My Cube has worked 100% of the time. Think my 64 worked fine too...only had to do the classic blow with it sometimes.

If only i knew how to do it BEFORE i bought a new one. Damn waste of money.
-
My Saturn (Domestic), Saturn (Japanese) , Dreamcast (DOmestic) and Sega CD (Domestic) all work perfect ...
;)
-
::looks lovingly at all properly working consoles and wonders why all of you guys suck so badly::
It\'s karma for not clapping during movies. ;)
-
Hey now, out of many consoles the only one\'s I have ever had any problems with are the PS2 (which was an on and off problem) and the Xbox.

Its all over the Main Forum. There is a sticky too. That\'s where I got my info :D

Bought another xbox tonight. Still annoyed with that fact, but atleast now I can finish up a couple of games I was into before the blasted thing died.

Congrats\' on the purchase? ( :D ). I think you will find that the Xbox has plenty of great games...err..hm..wait - you already had one?!?!
You can hit me the next time you see me, I just had to make some kind of joke.
-
Lic here is a happy thought. KOTOR will not transfer, as well as your Ninja Gaiden. When yours finally goes. It may be better for you to send yours off.
Btw I was not stuck with a Thompson Drive this time. Yippie
-
When or if it finally happens, I guess I will - as I hate the thought of losing that Ninja Gaiden save.
:(
-
When consoles started getting moving parts, wsa the day they started to get stupid problems consoles shouldn\'t have.
I still have all my systems in 100% working order. :)
-
Howdy folks! Never had either my PS2 or my XBOX die on me yet. I\'ve had both for about 3 years now.
