DAMN scary read. Our own policies are going to be the end of us. Airlines aren\'t allowed to use racial profiling to spot terrorists? That is absurd.

I used to have a roomate who was Muslim and he prayed 4 or 5 times a day. I believe that these men were probably praying in the lavs. That rolled up "thing" in a cloth that the author described sounds exactly like the prayer rug my roomate used.
Just a thought. Remember, all these men PROBABLY had to pray.
-
They were doing more than "praying" obviously.

I\'m quite sure these "musicians" are under surveilance as we speak. With those "dry runs", who knows?
-------------
The McDonalds bad had food in it which was consumed and hence, "empty" when the man left the bathroom.
But then again, that\'s why they chose a McDonald\'s bag right? To make one think exactly that.
---------------
The men shared the two lavatories to pray in. Each lavatory had a prayer rug in it. One man opened the Koran to read some passages.
But....they could have been building something. One person continuing an assembly from the last person\'s.
---------------
I\'m speaking on both sides of the fence here. What makes me skeptical is the bravado they had to do this in front of everyone. They know American passenger will now fight and they know there are air marshalls on board. Why do this so blatantly?
Hence why I think they were just praying. Then again, I could be wrong.
-
Good analysis, but being Arabic and acting suspicious on a plane is not the work of ordinary Muslims IMO. Besides only one took a towel into the rest room didn\'t he? What was the deal with the throat cutting motion and mouthing the word "no"? I have no disagreement the guy in the yellow shirt was reading out of the Koran - but it could have been reading before preparing to die.
Who knows for sure, but I would certainly be suspicious of them as well if I were on a flight where that happened.
-
If they were legit and they were just praying, they should have been bright to know that their behavior would upset the other passengers. If they were doing something else, they weren\'t very smart about it. If this was a "dry run" then they probably just added themselves to a few lists that will make it much harder for them to run the attack for real next time.
I don\'t know exactly what the law says about who can be searched, and what constitutes illegal racial profiling and so forth... but I though one-way tickets were a big red flag no matter what race you are. Besides I fully expect that the federal government is going beyond the law in collecting information on suspected terrrorists and their movements. They probably have all sorts of lists like this, and they just have to decide when and how they can legally use the information.

can someone copy paste the whole story, mine screws up after page 3

False (http://www.snopes.com/politics/crime/skyterror.asp)
-
Good find, but the story is half true - she just overreacted apparently.
-
I bet that dude never did that "no" signal.

Yeah. Looks like it.
Its probably happened to a bunch of people. Its just that she happens to be a journalist.

you would say something like that you old white bastard
j/k :p...
j/k. had to reiterate. you know how it goes around here.
-
I don\'t know why racial profiling is even necessary in this situation. I mean, wouldn\'t you want to stop and question a group of any race or of mixed race that was acting similarly suspicious?
And who knows, maybe the men would have been questioned to some extent had the federal agents not been on the plane. The flight personel were prolly just deferring to them. Why they didn\'t do more I don\'t know. Then again, who knows what they might have done to make sure nothing happened that the reporter didn\'t see, had these men actually been terrorists.
-
Why?
Fine, racial profiling is awsome!!!
But I won\'t hesitate to tell you you\'re wrong when a white man blows up a building.
-
I knew I was right!

Haha a story in Woman\'s Wallstreet of this lady overreacting to Muslims on a plane. Chicks just eat this drama up :p
Israel has one of, if not THE, best security setups for airlines. They do ANY and all type of profiling to find out information. If you look suspicous they\'ll pull you aside and ask you some questions. If your story doesn\'t hold up they\'ll search your luggage thoroughly.
I\'ve heard several stories where this worked and they were able to stop terrorists before they took off. As a result terrorists think twice about going to an Israeli airport and they\'re one of the safest around.
But this is America home of the free, land of the loss of common sense.
-
Racial profiling may be politically incorrect, but would you be angry if it stopped the next 911?

That\'s a decent trade off. I accept.

Vivi, id rather be attacked by terrorists then have racial profiling.
There is no point to protecting the citizens of this country if people are unequal in the eyes of the government.

You can tell them to crash into your house next time and spare 2,000 other American lives.
If a specific race is causing a problem (airplane bombs, hijacking) they should be profiled.
-
Well in normal areas of law enforcement it is a tad unfair to use racial profiling. Especially in some of the least likely situations. Like if i go to the movies and some cop gives me a look because im going into the game room thats right by the entrance to the theaters (making sure i dont sneek in). Of course in some cases i could understand.
Whatever. Im rambling.
The point is, on a plane or something like that, i think racial profiling is just to a certain extent. If you dont look or act suspicious then you really have nothing to worry about. Plain and simple.

Racial profiling is for A-holes

How do you tell someone not to look a certain color of skin????

I guess you forgot about all the non-arab terrorists then. "Races" of people do not cause problems. Taking such an ignorant view is just like saying that the jews brought down the german econemy after WWI.

I didnt say that. Im saying that even if they do look at the color of your skin, if you are acting perfectly normal you might get a little more attention but nowhere near as much attention as those guys on the plane.
Like i said. Racial profiling in this case is just to a certain extent.
