Title: video game club
Post by: Eiksirf on July 16, 2004, 10:19:52 AM
I work part-time at our local community college and the director of technology told me he wanted to start a video game club that could meet and talk games over pizza like twice a month.

As retarded as that sounded, I almost brushed it off completely.  But then I came up with a better idea.  Get a big screen tv, system, and four controllers set up near where the students pass by in between classes and you have something cool that everyone will use.

So I called Nintendo\'s PR department and to my surprise, they agreed to send a Platinum GameCube, 4 Controllers and some games.

We\'re buying new lounge furniture at the college so I\'ll have some spare couches left from the current stuff.

And we\'ve got an aging 50-inch tv that no one uses anymore.

The plan totally came together in a day and I hope to put this idea into effect right by the cafeteria.

I\'m so psyched about it, but I\'ll probably have left for a full-time job offer before it\'s ready for students to use...

Oh well. Future generations of students owe me one.

I doubt it\'d be anywhere near where you\'re going SwifDi.  Besides, with where you\'re going, you should have the cash to buy tons of Gamecubes and the friends to play them with.  ;)

Great work though, Eik.  I\'m surprised Nintendo agreed to it.  How will your college keep the crap from getting stolen?  Will it ask volunteers to keep track of the games?  A deposit everytime someone goes to use a controller?  Kinda interested in the details...

Probably keep everything behind a counter and then ask for a license or something for collateral

Actually Ryu, I haven\'t gotten that far.

The collateral idea is a good one. The key is getting away cheap.

We have magnetic alarm stickers, but we\'d have to buy an alarm to put in that room. A glass case of sorts like in a store, would work but that\'d have to be built (using more money).

Because it\'s public money at the community college, we can\'t just make purchases like that...

It also depends what Nintendo sends. Four Wavebirds would mean the system gets hidden, but the controllers are ripe to be taken, even if that\'d be stupid to do since they won\'t work without the plug in the console.

If anyone has ideas besides collateral, let\'s hear em. Even if I\'m gone, someone will have to figure it out...

One thing, there is a person with a desk in the room where this will be.

And it\'s Sussex County Community College in Newton...

If there is someone working a desk in the room, you could have them keep track of who is in the room at what times, and if its only for students, then you should be able to find who stole what easily.

That may not be much help, though, oh well...I can say I tried.

On that note - I am calling Nintendo and pitching the same exact idea,\' \'cept I don\'t go to college.
