I ve had a conversation with someone a few months ago about certain bands.
The thing is he told me that Chemical Brothers and Prodigy didnt do techno. Also he told me that Orbital and BT also didnt do techno.
I know that certain tracks from Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy sound more like rock. But certain songs of theirs were put into the techno category and they were even released in techno CDs like This Is Techno.
He told me specifically that Prodigy are playing Brakebeat.Never heard of that kind of music before.I even made some search in the internet but Prodigy and Chemical Brothers were sometimes mentioned as techno artists.I even searched for the history of Techno.Orbital and Prodigy were mentioned in it
And arent Orbital and BT techno artists???

Techno is more of a general term I believe. Tell your friend to open his mind to other people\'s oppinions.

Well, the whole discussion begun when I started a converstaion of how Trance is going from better to worse since it sells and has become too commercial.I brought up old artists that were put into the techno category and compared how Techno started and how it evolved today into Trance and how the genre seems to lose quality and gain quantity as time passes. (dont get me wrong I love trance but I see fewer remarkable songs than previously and more mediocre)
He asked me what artists I put into the Tehcno category and what artists to the Trance category.
You certaintly cant put Orbital, Prodigy, etc into the Trance category. So I mentioned Future Sound of London, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Orbital, BT etc as techno artists and he said none of them did techno (they certaintly dont do trance).
Then I mentioned a few others for Trance and he said almost none of them were trance artists.
*scratches head*

No you\'re right, Prodigy and BT definitely aren\'t trance. I\'d say trance is more Paul Oakenfold or DJ Tiesto. The way I look at it, techno is more adaptable to other forms of music. An example is Prodigy\'s Fat of the Land. Most of the songs have a techno base, but are changed through the use of guitars or a more hip-hop beat or a choir..anything. I can\'t see a trance song being used for anything except dancing/bobing your head/taking e..

Thats what I was saying too about techno.
He didnt tell me what kind of music he believes they do though when he told me they arent techno artists but he told me specifically for Prodigy they dont do Techno, they do Brakebeat.Never heard of that term before

I don\'t know crap about this, but I think it\'s "BREAKBEAT" not "brakebeat" :)
-
You thought right.
I produced Breakbeat for many-a-year.

 what is it anyways?

It\'s a style. Kinda hard to explain.
The Chemical Brother\'s early stuff is definatly Breakbeat... so is old Fatboy Slim.

I have a Fatboy Slim Cd a think, I should go find it..

I know im late but Techno is BROAD. And your friend is kinda off his rocker. They ARE techno artists and BT does have breakbeat elements in some of his songs but hes definately not a breakbeat musician. Orbital is definately not.
I love Prodigy. Actually i love almost everybody named but like Lilk said, people like okenfold do more trancy stuff. Or people like Digweed and sasha. They are more trance. I think youre a little late though my friend. Trance has been dead/dying for YEARS. The whole scene was shut down especially by the authorities. At least in the US. Then people started to try to revive it with "clean" (no drug) shows.
w/e im not going to go on and on about this but your friend is stupid. I love Techno and all forms of it (except i got out of trance a long time ago) and id say that the whole genre has/is taking a beating. Personally Ive really stayed dedicated to Jungle and DnB. Just tell your friend that hes gay.
IDK ive talked my ass off.

In Cyprus people still listen to Trance a lot.Trance artists like Sasha, Tiesto, Van Buuren etc perform in events here.
Most people listen to trance though because it\'s supposed to be cool here. Its like fashion or something. They will listen to anything that is trance and say its good jsut becuase they feel cool.Especially these days I mostly see bs from the Trance genre that are playied in Clubs in Cyprus.
When you tell them that Trance isnt as good anymore they get offended or somethin thinking that you are a fan of a different kind ofmusic and you bash their tastes. The funny thing is many of them started listening a lot to Trance only recently.
If I am not mistaken Trance still isnt completely dead in Europe and some events are still performed and also outside Europe. In Dubai last Xmass their was a Ministry of Sound event. But you are right that it seems to be dying. Especially when you compare what it was with what it is now.
