I\'ve become quite a runner in the past couple months.  I actually only started running to lose weight and get in shape for bootcamp but I\'ve grown to love it.  However I get a shin splint in the lower inside of my right leg.  It\'s starting to piss me off, I just run through it because I\'ve gotten used to it.  Still I wish it would go away because it annoys me more than it hurts me.  How does anyone else cope with this?

Try stretching out your shins. I used to get them fairly frequently. Stretching out your shins can really help.

How do I do this?  I usually stretch my calves, but shins...not sure what to do for them.

I don\'t remember exactly. Ask theomen. He might know.

Do some heal walks + what theomen said.

Footwear plays a very large role, and I\'ve found that increasing your running speed helps to prevent them;  Personally, a pace that is too slow always seems to hurt after a while.

During my brief bouts with it when I started running in junior high I never figured out what caused it.  Run through it and before you know it they\'ll be gone.  Until then it sucks.

I used to get them in both legs when I was younger, i did do a lot of running/cycling/soccer though. I just kept training until the pain eased off.

Heh....never had shin splints. All along, I thought they were protective gear that soccer players use. :p

What kind of foods have potassium?  I\'ve started eating alot of fruits.  I believe the shin splints are slowly but surely wearing away.  Running through them is a piece of cake now, afterwards they hurt but when Im in the middle of an excersise they cant budge me.

Bananna\'s are your best bet along with raisins.

				what\'s a shin splint?

i always just figured it was cos ur using muscles that u dont usually use that much, i get it when skating a lot, i just skate through it, you get used to it, and so does your body

Well I posted something but I guess it didn\'t show up.  Yea, Bananas will definently be your best friend.  The potassium helps with the lactic acid in your muscles.

			-
You could also take potassium supplements but bananas taste better :)

I dont know how to explain it in technical terms honestly.  Just imagine what it feels like to be sore after a workout, then mutiply that soreness by 10 and direct it in one spot of your leg.  You pretty much have what a shin splint is except the pain always comes up in the middle of an intense activity.  Most of the time it\'s running because yoru using your legs alot.

Something like that happens to me when I play basketball. Only I am completely unable to stand, it hurts like nothing I\'ve ever felt before, and my foot forces itself to move forward.
I really hate them. :(

What worries me is the possibility the plate in my ankle could be causing the pain instead of actuall shin splints.  Cant wait to get this thing removed so I can see what\'s really going on.

They told us at Boot Camp to wrap your foot when you get those. I have no idea if it works, but you can try it.
