Title: Monkeys=humans?!

JERUSALEM - A young monkey at an Israeli zoo has started walking on its hind legs only — aping humans — after a near death experience, the zoo\'s veterinarian said Wednesday.

Natasha, a 5-year-old black macaque at the Safari Park near Tel Aviv, began walking exclusively on her hind legs after a stomach ailment nearly killed her, zookeepers said.

Monkeys usually alternate between upright movement and walking on all fours. A picture in the Maariv daily on Wednesday showed Natasha standing ramrod straight like a human. The picture was labeled humorously, "The Missing Link?"

Two weeks ago, Natasha and three other monkeys were diagnosed with severe stomach flu. At the zoo clinic, she slipped into critical condition, said Igal Horowitz, the veterinarian.

"I was sure that she was going to die," he said. "She could hardly breathe and her heart was not functioning properly."

After intensive treatment, Natasha\'s condition stabilized. When she was released from the clinic, Natasha began walking upright.

"I\'ve never seen or heard of this before," said Horowitz. One possible explanation is brain damage from the illness, he said.

Otherwise, Horowitz said, Natasha\'s behavior has returned to normal.

You really can\'t get how cool it is till you see the picture.  It just looks like the monkey is strolling around.

So we got a brain damage and became humans :p

hmmm, walking on 2 legs eh?

That leaves 1 hand free for holding a vacuum cleaner, and the other for holding a feather duster.

Me too. Some people thought it was a cross between a human and a chimp (Clyde).

Cheetah, the chimp from the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan films is still alive and lives like a human. He is over 60 years old and enjoys smoking cigars.

It\'s funny that some people think that this is a sign of evolution and not "My stomach hurts when I walk on all fours so I\'ll walk upright." :D

Oliver was the name of the "humanzee", even though it\'s DNA wasn\'t exactly like a chimp, it wasn\'t a true humanzee.

The one in the US was far more controversial coz the ape actually LOOKED more human.

hmmm, so this means that the apes that didn\'t turn into humans yet are slowly evovling before our eyes? If you think about it that way we can see how we were made.

How isn\'t it a sign of evolution? When\'s the last time a sick chimp started walking on 2 legs? It said in the article that there were other chimps with the same sickness but they didn\'t change at all after they recovered. Also, even if it was because he got sick, that could just mean that sickness can cause evolution.

Proof of evolution?

But I don\'t think this really changed the DNA. Doesn\'t the DNA have to be altered for the trait to be passed on? I\'m not a biologist so I probably am wrong. Maybe I should have payed attention during evolution in Bio.

That\'s not evolution. That is adaptation. That monkey (not an ape - which is closer to humans) is adapting to its current condition. Just coz other monkeys had surgery and didn\'t walk upright, this one could have had a different set of scars on its abdomen to cause it some discomfort. By standing upright, it probably alleviates some of that pain.

Let\'s not jump to conclusions here. Evolutionary change does not happen to the same generation.

No. Monkeys, as well as clyde, are knuckle walkers. They can stand on their hind legs. The only primates that can walk on two legs are humans. We have the hips, feet and legs to do it. This monkey somehow can. I don\'t know how. Maybe it developed a better balance.

Probably the same way that people could walk on all fours if they had to... Like if they had stomach flu.

We all know evolution is joke anyways. At least IMO I don\'t believe in the whole "evolution theory"

damn skippy evolution is a joke..we all know that the the 1st man ever created was in africa..humans of all skin tones have come from the man & woman that created civilization...everything always reverts back to the beginning...now who\'s your daddy? ;)

*Looks a vivi...looks around...WHAM!... vivi on the floor knocked the f*** out*

Anyway, I cant really say that i think we evolved from monkies or apes. How long have monkies been on the earth? I mean if i remember correctly, they have been here just as long as we (our "ancestors" austrilopithicus (i think)) have if not longer.

I dont even think its evolution. Just a simple happening that nobody can currently explain (like hundreds of other things in our world).

I can say one thing though. If our generation gets to wittness a small portion of evolution then that would be pretty intense. The process it obviously to slow to notice each generation but to see this happening more often would more easily prove this to be evolution.

But if you think about it, maybe the way evolution happened was a few monkey\'s started walking up right due to some disease or injury and then when they had offspring, the DNA snahged to make the offspring walk up right as well, just a theory from me for all fo you.

My science teacher told us everyone misinterprits the evolution theory. He says all it means is that species are linked to eachother. Lions are linked to cats, cats to racoon etc.

Which is why some people people keep a closed mind about it. I had one friend who didn\'t believe in it because this person "refused to believe we evolved from monkeys". All I said was "um...the new theory says no." But everyone also seems to have their own version of evolution. I kind of do. People interpret it differently.
