I have a 6800 GT, up to date drivers, etc. etc. and installed Doom the other day and noticed horrible tears when I moved the mouse from side to side. I turned on vsync and the problem went away...
Then I noticed it for the first time on CoD yesterday and had to turn sync every frame on, but now I am capped at a consistant 60 fps do to this.
Why must I use vsync? Anyone know why some nvidia cards do this? I also was under the assumption that if I did use vsync it would cap my fps to the refresh rate which is 85mhz. I need some help here! :( :(
mm has a 6800GT I wonder if he has this problem. Help!

short answer.
vsync limits framerate to screen refresh rates to stop tearing.
Different games will run at different refresh rates.. COD must be running at 60hz when u play it.

How can I change this - my windows setting is for 85mhz - I have been reading that XP used to set every game to 60mhz by default - is this still true the article I read was from 2 years ago. Do people still use the NVRefresh tool?
With ATI I had an option to override the windows default refresh rate. I don\'t see the same thing with my nvidia drivers.

go into your control panel for your gfx card and there should be a refresh rate override. Not sure on 6800 cards.. See if theres any settings in game to change refresh rates too.

doom 3 is capped at 60fps
vsynch = good

Yah, Carmack made it so the vsync was locked at 60hz. There\'s no way to change it.

I have no problem with Doom III, but I would like to know how to override the windows vsync so I could get say 85fps in Call of Duty.

i told u already.. "go into your control panel for your gfx card and there should be a refresh rate overrid"
I doubt nvidia would make to many changes to the forceware drivers not allowing 6800GT owners from changing their refresh rates.
Right Click on desktop, properties, settings, advanced, choose 6800GT or whatever the tab is. On the side there should be a little menu system.. look for something like "Refresh Override" Then choose what refresh rate you want certain resolutions to run at.

I asked again because it doesn\'t work. :(

user error!

Why do you want 85 fps? :)
In Medal of Honor the FPS is capped around 96, you can make it higher by going into console and typing something like set com_maxrate 200 for example. Maybe COD is now capped at 60 somehow and you need to go into the console to reset it. Look for the console command.

NM I got it to 75, but it really has to do with my refresh rate - 60 hz is just too low and since I am having to use vsync it throttles everything. I am a bit ticked that I "have" to use vsync in some games - with ATI I never encountered any of this.

Doom 3 is capped that way for all videocards. Odd, but that\'s the way Carmack wants it.
