Um...Just go HERE (http://home.btconnect.com/hgi/ps3/ps3bluray.html)

I posted a pic of the protective caddies a while back. Unsure how they\'ll be embraced by Joe 6-pack, but to record over & over with a .1mm layer the disc it would need it.
In the latest issue of stereophile though they are saying TDK has developed a Hard Coat layer resistant to fingerprints and scratches, eliminating the need for a bulky cartridge. Rumored to be included in spec 2.0. This will only affect BD-RE though, ROM doesn\'t use a cartridge.

Yeah...I heard that they\'re eliminating the need for a protective cartridge as well. That would definitely make it a LOT cooler without it...
-
personally i wouldn\'t mind a cartridge as it will protects against scratch and stuff...

Well of course. I just enjoy the appearance of a disc. Discs can get VERY easily scratched if ur not babying them all the time...and even then...there\'s "accidents". But a cartridge would definitely protect it for sure...

I remember when it was rumored that Nintendo was going to use something like this(the protective caddies) for the Gamecube.
-
For CDs there might be no need of a protective cartridge, but for those babys it would be much better !!! The "Pits" are so small, that a little scratch could damage hundreds of MB and therefore ruin the whole disc ! I sometimes think, it would be better also for DVDs (I hate scratches on rented DVDs).

From what i remember, the cartriges were pretty sexy.

Sony Adopts Blu-ray Disc ROM for PlayStation 3

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), officially announced today that it had begun preparations to adopt Blu-ray Disc ROM (BD-ROM) format as a medium for the next generation PlayStation, the successor system to PlayStation 2.
Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a next generation high-density optical disc format that enables recording and playback of digital high-definition (HD) video signals and programs. BD-ROM format has a huge memory size of 54 GB (dual layer, single side), which is 6 times larger than that of DVD-ROM, and has the potential of becoming an ideal medium to distribute next generation entertainment content from movies and music to computer applications. Standardization of this format is currently underway lead by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).
MPEG2-TS, the signal compression technology used in Hi-Vision TV broadcasting, is also used in BD, making it possible to reproduce extremely high resolution HD video images. With the introduction of the latest high-compression code/decode technology (MPEG4-AVC and Microsoft\'s VC-1), playback of high-quality video images from HD video signals becomes possible even under a low bit-rate environment. On the computer applications front, including video games, the importance of a medium with the capability of storing huge amount of data and programs is becoming greater than ever.
The adoption of DVD format in the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system played an important role in accelerating the fusion of music, movies and computer entertainment. The huge installed base of PlayStation 2 has also contributed to the expansion of DVD-Video. Likewise, through the adoption of BD-ROM for the next generation PlayStation, SCEI aims to take part in the development of a new market created by state-of-the-art technology.
Development of key devices, including a single optical pick-up that can read data from all three formats of CD, DVD and BD, is already on-going within the Sony Group. Research and development in optical disc technology with even larger storage capacity, as well as mass production technology, are also moving forward with high expectation.

So now that the Blu-Ray disc technology has been established when can we expect Blu-Ray players, and companies to start using Blu-Ray w/ their software.
-
late 05 or early 06 they\'ll hit the shelves for home theater use. Unsure about computer drives.

Jeez, just saw that Blu-Ray group is making an 8-layer version of their disc for 200GB total.
