MGS2 didn\'t really help much out with the first one either (which was a friggin\' awesome game for the PS1 at that time)...

MGS2\'s value is literaturalistic (if there is such word). The ending doesnt matter if it left many questions. Its the messages that Kojima wanted to transfer to gamers that count. There are certain books with similar endings and characteristics.Unfortunately I cant remember the titles.Specifically there was one which involved people that no one knew, with great power that controlled everything in a nation.
It ended without revealing anything about them on who they are.Probably Kojima was inspired from that book since he loves books.
If you remember well the Patriots said:

SPOILER ALERT

To begin with -- we\'re not what you\'d call -- human.
Over the past two hundred years --
A kind of consciousness formed layer by layer in the crucible of the White House.
It\'s not unlike the way life started in the oceans four billion years ago.The White House was our primordial soup, a base of evolution --
We are formless. We are the very discipline and morality that Americans invoke so often.

Kojima personalized, gave a personality to the disciplines and moralities that were formed and evolved with history. These that automatically have some control to people\'s thinking, behaviour and acting in a nation and are passed from generation to generation for years since the beginning of that nation\'s history. Its something visible in every nation.Kojima choose US because its the best example of a powerful country.

I doubt we will see a sequel explaining the "they all died 100 years ago" unless Kojima is forced to change the story because some gamers dont seem to get it

talk about going a little deep into the story. I understood it but i too was hoping that they would come out with some sort of revolutionary story that could follow up after that but not loose the integrity of the plot. We all know kojima can make a good story (though a lot of people got to confused/upset with the story or the amount of it).

Oh well. So we wait for MGS4. 3 Still looks good to me. Kojima is like the Japanese Tom Clancey (sp?).

Tom Clansey is zero compared to Kojima IMO although Tom is good at what he is doing.
Kojima has the mind of a developer and a novelist and blends them greatly. This is probably one of the rarest examples of gaming that is trying to provoke thought and pondering that doesnt necessary have to do with the game world but with social life itself. He changes the values we see in gaming.Sets other standards. No other videogame has had that kind of depth in its plot that has set such different standards. He doesnt follow common stereotypes.
This is the only videogame that isnt just a "play for entertainment" toy. Some gamers didnt accept it because they are used to seeing videogames that way.Well this game is not for them. Its different

I, for one didn\' like the story of MGS2.  I find MGS1 story was way way better than MGS2 and MGS1 is a true classic videogame.

MSG1 had a way better story line. I agree w/ that. The storyline wasn\'t as great in MSG2. Although, the gameplay was better.

yep i agree,..wasn\'t snake supposedly going off to either face the patriots or to try & get i helga\'s (i think that was her name) baby back? i understood the story to some degree but coming towards the end it started to become convulted & almost imploded on itself..mgs1 had an excellent storyline dealing with how the world has nuclear weapons & how nations deal with one another because of it...storyline was superb...

i feel what you are sayin uni..but was just hoping we would\'ve seen a sequel instead of a prequel because no-matter what snake doesn\'t die in this episode,..because it\'s a prequel..;)..meh just forget that last comment i was being silly..i just really don\'t like prequels..i think it\'s lame..i always want to see progression not regression when it comes to story themed games...

it would be fun to call it Metal Gear Solid 0 because its a prequel not sequel.

Like REsident evil 0....

but either way, MGS-2 have too much messy storyline.  Raiden shouldn\'t be included...if he should be included, please make the storyline more interesting and as simplistic and straight forward like MGS1 is.

I agree about MGS3 should be sequel instead of a prequel.  But i think its going to be hard because of all the way off storyline that MGS2 wrote.  Such as *spoiler- Liquid\'s arm and Ocelot...*

You\'re right, there were so many loose ends left untied in the game. I haven\'t played it in so long, I wish I could remember specific examples.

The sequel I believe to MGS2 will involve saving Olga\'s baby, finding Revolver Ocelot and the Metal Gear Ray.And others should definetely be involved with the Patriots except Ocelot.
I dont know what Hideo Kojima will think about the Patriots\' story although I doubt he will do anything to explain literary the Patriots.Just a guess now:Probably a secret group of people who have been "behind" the White House for many many years and have been passing their roles from generation to generation never revealing theirselves(hence the Patriots seemed dead 100 years ago) trying to keep the society under the control of these "moralities and disciplines" that affect people\'s behaviour indirectly.Patriots evolved through them and their work till they shaped form as information and consiousness.
Ok I know my estimations sound confusing to some but anyways :p

MGS2 was so f*cking stupid.  I honestly couldn\'t stand it and wish they changed it more for the American release.  That white hair kid\'s dumb girlfriend calling him up every 30 seconds while he\'s on an uber important spy mission to tell him she\'s worried about him!?!?  Then they\'d get into it with some pretty drawn out conversations.. what kind fof pansy @$$ is he?  Solid Snake wouldn\'t be doing that.  ARRHGHHGHGH!!!!!!

Graphics were killer though.

Hideo Kojima is funny though, in a twisted way. In MGS2 he denied gamers the bad ass tough guy player character that
Solid Snake is, for most of MGS2\'s time.

Instead, they got forced to at least try to identify with the
\'pansy\' Raiden character.

Now, with MGS3 it LOOKS like we only get to play as the tough guy Big Boss ; something for which the gamers longed.

However, In the E3 04 and GS trailers, Big Boss get\'s his ass whooped by both Thunderbolt and The Boss, a FEMALE soldier.
Of course, it\'s clear as day this narrative mechanic, plays with the male \'tough guy\' ego of any gamer who has lots of it.

This makes Big Boss instantly alot more human. He falters, but
learns and gets back on his feet again.

It will be very interesting to see how BB\'s character evolves during the story and how he eventually turned \'evil\'.

oh yeah, btw ; i think the \'new\' Metal Gear kicks ass bigtime. It looks to handle like a rally car in that chase scene. It\'s codename is "Shagohod" ? Shag - o - hod ??? During the 60\'s  :thepimp:

I liked both solids but its always hard to make a better game than the original. I liked the dark feel of the whole game and the drearyness of Shadow Moses. The big shell kinda f*ed things up because it wasnt like anything else at all. Im not saying that i didnt enjoy it but the Ship part with snake was almost perfectly done. I remember playing the demo for the first time. It had that metal gear solid feel to it.

I like the setting of 3 and it seems to work nice, but it also would have been kool to go back to Zanzibar with Grey Fox etc. I think that location would have been pretty awesome.

2 things. During both MGS games I was 100% positive that upon completion of the game my character was still alive.

The second, this game is set 40 years ago, clearly it\'s not the same Snake as you played in MGS1/2.

In many cases, a prequel can expand upon and inrich the storyline of the proceding games (novels, movies, etc.). It can certainly be a progression if done correctly.

Uni, excellent posts, I agree with you muchly. :)

Knotter, excellent post. :)

THX, I\'m not sure if you were trying to be funny or not, but I disagree with your post, but whatever. :) The character of Raiden was a necessity to the game.
