Title: new iMac
Post by: nO-One on August 31, 2004, 02:06:16 AM
Just thought I\'d post it, Apple completly rewamped the iMac, bold move considering the sunflower iMac design was still somewhat young compared to the old crt design.

Anyhoo, looks good the space beneath the screen kinda bugs me though.

Meh, I like the idea but definitely wished they could\'ve tweaked the design more.  With Apple I always enjoy their new products because they\'re functional AND sleek.  This one just looks functional and boring, I actually prefer the previous design more.

Thanks for the link.

Like THX, I actually prefer the previous design more.  It just made more sense design wise.  Like you said, n0-0ne, the bottom space looks really ... odd.

Prefer the previous one. This one has to many, blank spaces. It really does not appeal to me in the least.

I think it looks pretty nice. But eh... all models come default with Geforce FX5200 videocard....that\'s the worst of worst cards...

So THAT is where Nvidia\'s dumped there overload of cheap graphics chips eh :o

Also, ...only 256MB main ram ? ughhh..

Apple should have given it at least 512MB main ram with an
Ati Radeon 9700 mobility chip.

You can upgrade the memory. And the space below the LCD is, I assume, where most of the components are. Other wise, it\'d be behind the LCD and make it thicker and possibly cause some hazing on the screen with its heat.

Yeah...but why then didn\'t they make the \'foot\' kind of like a modular expandable component ; that would put to use some of that wasted space between foot and screen.

For a product which should sell for mass appeal i still think the FX5200 card is really poor considering you\'re stuck with it. A \'foot\' with expansion slot would cater for some real videocards, which in turn could raise Mac gaming in general.

I belive this iMac is intended as an eMac. You know....for educational purposes. Hence the asthmatic video card. It\'s basically for your typical word processing and basic multi-media for school.

Hah good point.  Most people don\'t game anyway, I could see a couple dozen of these sitting in a classroom.

You guys also have to consider the heat higher end cards give off.

Apple needs a silent computer, and they had to somehow put a G5 in that small a space with out a huge fan, an high end vid card might just be impossible for them to put in there right now.

IIRC Apple has some kind of deal with nVidia where they supply most of their cards.
