Work on the much-anticipated fan-game Chrono Trigger: Resurrection came abruptly to a halt today, when the project\'s small development team finally received a ceast-and-desist letter from Square Enix.
It is unknown why, after years of looking the other way, that Square Enix has just now finally decided to crack down and threaten the developers of this particular project with legal action. One popular theory is that it\'s because of the unprecedented quality of the project, which, frankly, is really up there and among the best fan-game work I\'ve ever seen.
Chrono Trigger: Resurrection, for those who don\'t know, is (or was) an ambitious 3D remake of the original legendary Super NES game. It\'s something that many gamers have wanted to see happen for a long time, and this fan project was not only meeting those desires, but surpassing them, thanks to an uncommonly dedicated development team who was using honest-to-goodness GameCube and Xbox development kits to put the game together. But don\'t take my word for it, see for yourself: despite the fact that the project has officially come to a halt, the team has managed to put up a new trailer along with screenshots to show us what might have been (screens also found below).
Although, it might be best not to look at them if you\'re (a) a Chrono Trigger fan and (b) are easily depressed.
Take heart, though, Chrono fans. One theory as to why this project was shut down is that Square Enix is planning a remake of its own. We can only hope...

Really too bad, it looks fantastic. Square better follow up with a remake. Seems like it would have made more sense just to sponsor these guys.

Holy shit, I love the look of that world map.
..I hadn\'t even heard of this game before a week or so ago..
..:(
-
Square Enix sound more like the Japanese mafia after this news story. :(
Mind you its easy to get the two mixed up.
One is a evil organization (U.S. spelling :p) with no qualms about making people “disappear” and the use of torture and dismemberment is not unheard of…..and the other is the Yakuza.

Very nice looking pictures.
I haven\'t play Chrono Trigger before, but this looks pretty nice.

Looks fantastic :)

Chrono Trigger is the one SNES game I still want. And maybe FF3. But both are still way expensive on ebay and stuff. It\'s too bad...

btw:What platforms was it going to be released on?No PS2?
-
The guys were using Xbox and GC development kits...or so it says in the article.
-
PC was the most likely actually...
-
^that makes sense as I believe they were planning to make it free. I don\'t think they would have had a choice since they don\'t own the copyrights.
-
sounds to me like Square Enix has something in the works and decided to shut these guys down before they get to work.
-
That and the blatant copyright infringement and professional level of the project.
They were probably afraid these guys would make money off it.
Hopefully Square picks it up as a project. I\'d buy it.

This really bums me out... I was looking foward to this. If Square-Enix does have their own project in the works, it better make this one look like crap in comparison.

Wow. What a bummer. I\'m a huge Chrono fan. Although Chrono Cross was far from amazing. Amazing is the word that i would use for those screen shots.
