Doctors Soaked by Translator Costs
Tuesday, September 14, 2004
LOS ANGELES — The Bush administration is threatening to yank federal money from physicians, hospitals and clinics that don\'t comply with a policy put in place in the prior administration that aims to help immigrants gain access to medical care.
Four years ago, President Clinton signed the executive order requiring doctors who treat Medicare (search) and Medicaid (search) patients to hire translators for those who don\'t speak English.
"The problem here is that we\'re required by a presidential order, without funding, to have translation in every single language requested by the patient. So this could be up to 500 languages," said Dr. Clifford Colwell, who is fighting back with thousands of other doctors who are suing the federal government, claiming the rule is unconstitutional.
While the doctors agree that each professional worth his or her salt must be able to communicate with patients, they insist the cost of the requirement will leave many patients without care.
But Dr. Jane Delgado of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (search) argues that hiring translators doesn\'t add much to the cost of health care, and may actually save money in the long run.
Thanks Clinton!

Ah shit, what\'s that called...we\'re covering it in Political Science for christs sake. I should know this.
Yeah, that does pretty much suck. Making the states do something without funding is bullshit, frankly. Oh yeah, and it IS Unconstitutional :-P
See Yuz.

They should make some kind of electronic translator that a person speaks in one language and gets translated into perfect english. Either that or require everyone to speak english. That works too :)

Star Trek? ;)
Speaking of hospitals.
I once had a polish nurse.. I could not understand half the things she said, and she was very rough.
The nicest nurse I have met (that was by the district nurse office, 60 meters from my house) was from Iceland.. I could not understand what she said either, but she was nice to look at. :)

English should be required, at least as a second language, when living in this country. Case closed.

Maybe I can understand a few words here and there that we share.
Icelandic is what we spoke over here (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) 800-1200 years ago or something. Our languages have evolved from old Norse (similar to Icelandic) to what we speak in Scandinavia today (I can understand Danish and Norwegian because they have evolved with my language, but not Icelandic which has stood still).
I guess it has to do with isolation.. We have been inspired by German, English, French and so on while the small population in Iceland has kept their language "clean". Sweden had a huge immigration wave from Germany, and French speaking parts during 1200-1700.
NoOne, fell free to correct me if Im wrong.
Anyway Icelandic is a beautiful language, I\'d love to learn it. I know a guy who studies it right now, he says its harder then I might think. :)
Example of “runsvenska”, what we spoke from 800-1225.

Bush should just force the rest of the world to adopt English as the universal language. Hell, if he didn\'t have advisors, he might try it.

English already IS the international language. The most common language bridge is English.

Damn I wondered why my medical bills were so freaking high, :)
