Roger Ebert:
"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is even more fun than it sounds like. In its heedless energy and joy, it reminded me of how I felt the first time I saw "Raiders of the Lost Ark." It\'s like a film that escaped from the imagination directly onto the screen, without having to pass through reality along the way. "

I\'m going on Sunday, can\'t wait:bounce:

I\'ll definitely see this one.  Tomorrow will be a screening of Garden State and then probably a night showing of Resident Evil Apocalypse and then a Sunday matinee for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.  Pretty busy movie weekend and I have to write up 2 screenplay synopsis for classes.  #*%#*%^*#*%  Here\'s to hoping something in these films inspires me. :)

Please do a write up of some sort for Garden State, it looks really good and I\'ve heard nothing but postive things about it.

It is pretty damn good actually.  I don\'t think it\'s quite as good as so many people are boasting it to be, but it is indeed excellent nevertheless.  If you have it in a theatre in your area, go ahead and go see it.  It\'s worth at least a matinee.

It\'s just in regards to Garden State as I have yet to see Sky Captain.  I just don\'t want to delve into the plot of Garden State too much as it sounds, on paper, really boring, but when you see it, it\'s really entertaining.

Sky Captain is definitely some of the most fun I\'ve had at the theaters this year or any year for that matter.  It\'s certainly one of the best adventure films I\'ve seen.

It took me about 15 minutes to really get settled into the visuals and then I was hooked right up to the end.  Beautiful style and well directed.

The acting is superb, imo.  Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie fit into place in every scene and brought so much life making this a truly captivating experience.

Coupled with the visual flare and great performances is a very high energy and that\'s what makes Sky Captain so much fun.

This is the kind of movie you need to see in the theater...but it\'s not for everyone.  Those of you who can\'t let go of reality for an hour and a half need not apply.  Those of you with an imagination will most likely appreciate this film for everything it is.

Come in, Sky Captain.:)

I just think it\'s cool that the ENTIRE MOVE is filmed in front of a green screen.  Nothing you see is real, and that must be tough to imagine all that stuff that was going on.

I\'m mildly interested in seeing it.

Funny how everyone is saying this mive is neat that everything was green screened, but say Star Wars lost a lot with the new movies with so much green screen.

Part of the appeal of the orig. SW was the gritty, weathered look all the sets had. It looked old, and lived-in... with the odd recognizable vacuum cleaner part stuck on the walls and shit...

I appreciated the visuals, and I was able to suspend my disbelief sufficiently to ignore all the departures from known physics, and the impossible machines, ... however I couldn\'t get over the dumb script.  The characters were almost completely unsympathetic.  Gweneth Paltrow was basically a dumb jealous b*tch from beginning to end, and Jude Law as a 2 dimensional cardboard cutout.  I had no idea where he was coming from.  The storytelling style was obviously the 1930\'s serial cliffhanger nonsense, ala "Raiders of the Lost Arc," but there was no interesting character like Harrison Ford\'s Indiana Jones to keep it afloat.  The style in itself is not sufficient.

The only character that was in any way intriguing was Angelina Jolie, and she was barely in it.  This script needed a rewrite to develop some more realistic characters and more interesting dialogue.

I hate to tell you this, but my band is no more. Actually, the project at hand had a lot to do with it. Last week, everyone was on board to work for three days and crank out some heavy shit, then I was the only one to show up at the studio. Three days in a row, I was the only one waiting around the studio. I have no product for you. I\'m really sorry, I would have liked for this to work. I have a new project with some more reliable people, but it is in its infancy. The main guy, Ben, is an engineer in a recording/video studio, we rehearse there, (and record for free-real studio)  but I don\'t know how fast we can come up with anything...hope I didn\'t fizuck you too bad....

yeah, but starwars didn\'t film everything with green screen.  Even the sets and things they are sitting on and whatnot are all computer generated.

Cored my friend, the movie was never supposed to be realistic in the first place. If you had to stomach the whole thing then you probably shouldnt have seen it. Im not trying to be a dick but going to a movie like that and expecting realism is like jews for jesus.

I enjoyed the relationship between Joe(Jude) and Polly(Gwyneth).  Joe is a star pilot, what more explanation do you need?  Polly is a reporter who wants the story and has a history with Joe.  What do you want?  Complex chararcters would have sucked the fun right out.

Frankie(Angelina) just kicked ass, too bad she wasn\'t in more of the film.

I thought the script and dialogue fit the the 30/40\'s era the film was aiming for.

Where did you get this?  Please read my post again.   I have no problem with a movie set in a fantasy world like this one.  My problems with the movie were because of the dumb script.  That has nothing to do with the supposed "realism" of the world the story was set in. No matter what the setting, you still need well developed, sympathetic characters, and interesting dialogue.  This film didn\'t have those.

My problem was that it wasn\'t as fun as it should have been.  Complex characters would have put MORE fun into the story.  Instead we have to hear these incessantly repeated exchanges about "Why did you sabotage my airplane" and "Why did you cheat on me..."  Ad nauseum.    Doing a modern simulation of a 1930\'s serial cliffhanger is one thing, but the screenwriter should still be held to modern standards of writing.  That kind of hollow dialogue sounds especially jarring and empty in the 21st century.

Those exchanges are partly what I liked about the movie.../shrugs shoulders

It was simple, I didn\'t need a backstory and I certainly didn\'t need to see their romance escalate...there was plenty else going on.:)

How could you not know the whole movie was infront of a blue screen?

I have yet to see the film, but the local paper bashed it fairly hard, calling it a collage of idea\'s, but a mess in the end.
