There was a certain presentation slide shown at the recent PlayStation Business Briefing which we found to be very interesting. As seem below, (look at it, it\'s magical) the slide seems to reveal that the PS3 will premier some time early next year (by "premier", we can only presume that Sony are referring to an official document announcing that the console is actually in production), or well before the next E3 at the very least. Following the initial premier, a presentation will be given at E3 where perhaps the first concept designs will be showcased.
The slide also indicates that the second PS3 development kit (Ver.2) will be released around the time of next years TGS, providing developers with the resources they need to fine tune their titles before the PS3’s 2006 launch.
It is exciting news which means that the PS3 is nearing completion and Sony\'s next generation plans are beginning to solidify.

I see something like "near the end of this year" on that board :)
-
why is there two lines for next system?
-
^^^^^
I think the top one is the PS3 "premiere" and the bottom one is the development kits...
-
it looks like premire is end of 2004 (according to the star on a very sketchy graph)
;)
-
Those are fiscal years guys and I believe Sony\'s end March 31st...which means you\'ll probably see the PS3 in February or March of \'05.
-
It won\'t be out probably til 2006 though, but definitely a lot sooner than thought before. At least we get to see it soon :)
-
6 years between consoles... all I can say is it better be worth the wait...

I\'m not getting hyped up just to see PS3 launch with Fantavision 2.;)
I\'ll start to get excited when I can read reviews of the launch games...

I think Sony said they are trying to lengthen the console life span.
your avatar bothers me.

What, does Ronald scare you?
-
Sony was originally planning for the PS2 to last 10 years, I believe.
Though, perhaps it will. How many years after the PS2 launched did the PSX last?
And Fantavision wasn\'t so bad. Just ask Hawkey!
-
less than 5 years
-
PSOne not PSX. PSX is a completely different machine (HDD/DVD recorder with a PS2 thrown in for good measure).
PSOne still sold many years after the PS2, I\'m not quite sure if it\'s still selling but PSOne has had a lifespan of at least 7-8 years.
-
I just think it\'s a dumb avatar.
You can still buy Playstation games at most retailers so I\'d say it\'s still being supported. I believe they might still be making Playstation games or at least ports for it.
-
I know they make Madden for it every year.
BTW, why don\'t you like my avatar?
-
Ronald McDonald in read head...interesting...
-
He is a communist!....wait...communism....and Ronald McDonald....something\'s not right

I don\'t know if it\'s the colors, the face he\'s making, or just the fact that it\'s Ronald.
It\'s unsettleing.
-
I thought my avy would be funny. You don\'t see an angry Ronald too often.
-
Thats from family guy? correct?
-
Is Ronald more important than PS3? :p

At the moment, yes.
-
This thread has more posts about angry Ronald McDonald from Family Guy than the topic at hand. That\'s just great :D
I like the avy, but that\'s just me.
I think I read somewhere that once the PS3 comes out, they\'re going to stop supporting the PlayStation (PSONe).

Its not a stupid idea really.

Any news on PS3\'s graphics chip ? We know XBox2 and N5 will have Ati\'s R500. So, is Sony making their own GPU ? Graphics Synthesizer2 ? Wouldn\'t it have been a better idea to have Ati or Nvidia do the GPU for PS3 ?

Sony probably wants to have total control of the hardware patents that will be implemented in the console for the means of simplifying or changing costs.Or even to compete the other consoles\' capabilities.
Imagine now trying to decide which of the two consoles you should purchase.XBOX2 with an ATI?Or a GC2 with an ATI?Ofcourse you will go for the one that has the most powerful graphics ATI card.Ofcourse ATI wouldnt want to have two 2 kinds of ATIs (one less powerful than the other) in each console since it could mean that only the one with the most powerful will sell(leaving unsold ATI gaphics cards in the inferior console). If thats how ATI will work then it wont let Sony have control of the craphic chip\'s capabilities to compete according to their plans if they deside to have an ATI chip.
Also if Sony decides to implement PS3 hardware to other products of theirs (think of PSX or the efforts to offer the GScube for advertising purposes) they wont have total control of the hardware patent.

Thank you.
Well explained.
-
Ok, thanx Unicron for explaining it from that viewpoint.
But...Imo Ati is a powerfull player. Imagine how easy it
will become to get top PC games over to Xbox2 and N5.
Devs will have to use propietary code for PS3, which might
be quite difficult like with PS2, right ?
I\'m just trying to say that Sony has done nothing but hyping
up Blu-Ray when it comes to PS3. What if devs have to tackle
a massive code library again to pull off graphics FX on PS3
in software ?
-
There were news in the past about Sony colaborating with library tool manufacturers(including OpenGL I think) to achive something something similar to XNA that will reduce development time and costs. So that might mean that their graphics chip could have similarities to present PC graphics cards.
Also I believe having PC hardware in a console is a step back (see XBOX and PS2) in programming experience and in futureproof lastability. If PS2 had a slightly more powerful PC hardware than what was available in 1999(the time it was released in Japan) right now we wouldnt have seen the difference in graphics we see now and neither it would have been as competitive right now with GC or XBOX.
