When the slim-downed unit was revealed, keen-eyed observers asked, "where\'s the hard-disc drive bay?" We posed the question to Sony, which confirmed new unit would not have an HDD bay. However, Sony assured gamers that the lack of an HDD bay "was NOT a sign of Sony Computer Entertainment’s change in philosophy regarding the hard disc drive" and that the company is looking into "other memory options."
So where does that leave PS2 players of Final Fantasy XI, which requires the HDD? According to Sony, there\'s no problem, because "consumers who want and use the hard disc drive are typically the more ‘hard core’ gamers, and with more than 27 Million PlayStation 2 units already sold in North America, we feel that a majority of those HDD interested consumers already have their PlayStation 2 units."
However, a statement by FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka to a British game site didn\'t sound nearly as upbeat. "We\'re still preparing, and looking into perhaps even changing platforms, because once the PlayStation 2 is phased out, [the FFXI] population will have to move somewhere," he said.
I doubt this poses a huge threat but why wouldn\'t Sony just support the HDD? Was it a flop?
-
No one supports it except for Squaresoft and two other games. Socom II will be the 4th game with some new downloadable maps soon. That\'s about it. Pretty weak in regards to the overall userbase of the machine. A slimmed down new design for the PSTwo fits in with Sony\'s original idea for their consoles. I think Square can go blow a goat. They haven\'t produced anything original this generation anyways. Who cares what they think? Their overall presense in the console world is nowhere near as important as it was four years ago.

I wouldn\'t say their originality rocked last generation either. It\'s their standard RPGs that manage to sell millions and I would consider them a system seller company.
I doubt this effects this rest of Square and I can only guess that by platform changes he meant PS3 but now is not the time for Sony to burn any bridges.

will the PS2 recognize the HD if placed in an external bay and plugged into USB port?
-
I believe they should sell FFXI on CD that comes with some memory device. But then again I dont know how much memory people need for the many updates and patches that are released once in a while for it

somebody mentioned that in another thread but I can\'t find anything to confirm it.
-
PSTwo is USB 1.1 and there are no firewire ports on this one.
-
So, you are saying the slimmed down new version of PS2 lack the Firewire connection?
I agree that the HDD need a faster connection and USB for PS2 isn\'t fast enough. Its USB 1.1 like THX said which run at 12 Mbits max....

I should take the time to dig up all the posts I made on why the HDD would be a failure, and how some of you kept trying to convince yourselves it was going to be a success... Just for the record, I was right. It was a failure and even Sony notices this.
-
^Nobody cares if you were right ages ago.And nobody said it was going to be succesful. We took the "wait and see" approach.

hard drive\'s dont belong on consoles
i said this years ago

I like how I don\'t have any limits on gamesaves, don\'t have to spend $30 on a 8MB memory card, and how I can save my favorite songs to a custom playlist to be used in certain games.
I don\'t have Xbox Live so I can\'t comment on the downloadble material. It can work great, it just neeeds to come with the system.

Bullshit.
Go back and look at various threads and you will see there was no "wait and see" approach. Don\'t you try and backtrack on it, now that I have been proven correct.

Disagree. Hard drive\'s are great for consoles, provided they are not half-assed done, like Sony\'s.

Ok.You are right and special

Damn skippy.

Hmm..
If I recall correctly, the Japanese PS2 model doesn\'t have an internal HDD bay. They had to do it as mm described.
They haven\'t produced anything original this generation anyways.
Well.. there\'s The Bouncer. :p Even if their involvement in the developement process was limited. Besides, most people didn\'t like that so I guess it doesn\'t count.. :)
-
half assed done?
it\'s not like they used a proprietary setup and charged mega bucks for it
is PS3 coming with a hard drive?
:)

Give me a break. The HD was nothing more than a half ass counter to MS launching one with the Xbox. It was a half ass setup. They kept postponing it, trying to gather hype and get developers interested and guess what? The consumers didn\'t care and neither did the developers. I said it over a year ago, the HD was nothing more than Sony\'s 32X.
-
I am pretty sure HDD be built in with PS3...unless Sony doesn\'t want their "broadband online gaming" becoming mainstream because history itself show that add ons don\'t sell well. Sega is a good example of this...please, Sega...
-
also..nobody likes to buy add-ons..except swifs ex...i add her on to my massive CLIP every night!..s**t where the f**k did that come from?..:p..anyway regarding square even tho they haven\'t been pushing anything that great lately..sony cannot afford to lose them..
only thing i\'m looking forward to from square is advent children, ff12 ( i haven\'t bought a ff game since 7) and a true sequel to ff 7...forget that crap they are making with vincent..stop f*ckin\' milkin\' the series and give us a true sequel!

Actually Sony announced plans for a HDD before MS announced the XBOX(which is before PS2 was even launched).MS wasnt the one that had the initial idea.MS were the first to announce a HDD build in
-
The HDD is more like Sony\'s 64DD.
When it comes to hard drives, Microsoft has the right idea.
