Title: So I am standing in line at Movie Gallery...
Post by: GigaShadow on October 03, 2004, 03:46:04 PM
My wife and I go to movie gallery today and right in front of us there are 2 women talking about how great John Kerry is.  I didn\'t even notice until my wife alerted me to it.  So I think "nah I am not going to get involved in this one - I am out with my family."

Just when I think I can escape - one of the ladies turns around and says "So what do you two think?"  I just look at her and say my wife and I are big GWB supporters and I leave it at that.

The next thing I know this woman goes nuts.  My wife starts getting scared and finally the manager asks the lady as delicately as possible to leave the store.  She leaves and I thank the manager.  She states that she doesn\'t really support either candidate, but she has never seen such strong reactions from people regarding this election(she must have been around 40 years old or so).

That being said, after that incident this afternoon, I tried to think of an election that has made people so passionate in my lifetime.  I really can\'t think of one that has so divided this country the way this one has.  I have heard of some Bush supporters giving the "finger" to Kerry supporters they see on the road (due to bumperstickers) and vice versa.  Has anyone else seen anything like this or had an experience like I had this afternoon?

In one of my PoliSci classes we were having a discussion about the election and this one girl was talking about how she supports Kerry because of GWB\'s stance on several domestic issues when another girl cut her off mid statement and started talking about how weak Kerry was and how GWB is what we need during a war on terror. After she finished, another guy in my class when off about how bad GWB is for America and how uneducated you have to be to support him. This kept going back and forth until it turned into a shouting match with a lot of personal jabs made under people\'s breath and became REALLY intense.

You could tell the teacher wanted to jump in and stop it but he is a hippie and doesn\'t want to stifle discussion.

I have never been in a classroom discussion that got THAT heated and I have been in Philosophy classes dedicated to arguing various moral/social problems(ie. Abortion, Drugs, Crime, Racism, etc.)

Many people have told me that this is the most polarizing election they have ever experienced. I recently read in the paper that more people between the ages of 18-30 have registered to vote in this upcoming election than in the past 20(30?) years.

I had a kerry supporter (you know, the ones that stalk campuses trying to get votes) snap on me when I dissagreed with her that bush needs to be "kicked out of office".  She tried to start an arguement with me, and all I wanted to do was walk to class.  Universities are a breeding ground for psycho liberals.  You voice your opinion about bush here and you get your head chewed off.

I don\'t care about who you support as long as you don\'t throw it into my face.  It shouldn\'t be acceptable, and i\'m not saying it\'s only the kerry supporters that do it.  That\'s just who I\'ve had the unpleasant experiences with.

I\'m digging it, because there would appear to be a real choice in candidates, and it\'s a really important time.

I\'m more passionate and partial than I\'ve ever been.

And I\'ve heard something like that about young voters and I think that\'s great.

Regardless of the outcome, at least more people are taking part. That\'s how it\'s supposed to be.

I wonder if last election\'s close results have helped convince people to come out and try to make a difference?

I am young, therefor I haven\'t seen a lot of elections and the ones I did see, I never paid much attention to, but I will say there is a certain hype to this one. At work we had the debate on CNN and the break room was filled. People was watching and people wanted to discuss who they was going to vote for and why.

I was eating at Burger King two days ago and this old guy comes in the store and just starts telling everybody how he doesn\'t want a president that has snuck up behind somebody and shot somebody in the back of the head. I suppose he was refering to Viet.

So finally this other old guy told him to "shut up" and leave. Then the old guy left the store and this guy just told everybody of his reason to not vote for Kerry. I think he was crazy.

I have two bumper stickers on my car. I LOVE pissing other people off so they say some pretty mean things.

The meanest one has to be:

"The road to hell is paved with Republicans"

And my other one says:

"Don\'t vote Republican-Don\'t be part of the Asses of Evil"

And so on.

They make no points but they piss people off. And I work, I don\'t know if anybody is familiar of Dallas, by Highland Park. In case you don\'t know, Highland park is the richest section of Dallas. They just opened a brand new car dealership there and I\'ve never seen so many Ferraris and Porsches in one parking lot.

And surprise surprise! All of the houses there have those HUGE "Bush-Cheney" signs and "Vote Bush" in their front lawns. Hmm. I wonder why? I see "Bush bumper stickers" on those CLK\'s and Escalades and BMW\'s all the time!...HMM

Anyways alot of young people are getting invovled. I\'ve been in alot of heated arguments. Good stuff.

Today I saw a bumper sticker that said "Republicans for Kerry/Edwards"

No shit.  You know it\'s a weird election when you start seeing Republicans switching sides  (and vice versa I assume, although I\'m not positive about it).

I was talking with a family member today, and she said it\'s as simple as:  "Some people love war and some people hate it."  That\'s an oversimplification on both sides, but I think there\'s a seed of truth.  I would extend it by saying...

1.  "Some liberals oppose any war for any reason on general principles."  (Not me,..  I was in favor of kicking the dog shit out of Afghanistan)  However, I\'m sure you\'ve met a liberal who is against all war.

2.  "Some conservatives will accept any war their leaders show them because it\'s considered the patriotic thing to do.  Then when the war is shown to be a mistake and not beneficial to our country, some conservatives will continue supporting it because they don\'t like to admit they were wrong."

Anyway, my point is that WAR will do these kinds of things to people.  Make them crazy.  It\'s always been like this.

Yea, I don\'t remember it being like this in the few elections I\'ve been alive for.  Just the other day their was a guy standing on the main street thru my suburb, he was just standing there shaking a kerry sign.  Nevertheless, he was getting some terrible reactions considering it\'s a rather conservative suburb.  People were fake swurving at him, flipping him off, slowing down when it\'s 50 to scream out the window.  It\'s a crazy world these days.

Although on saying that over here... I have never faced that problem.... as I have YET to meet anyone who is a DIEHARD Blair supporter…nope not even ONE…

Shame though….. would love to go Toe to Toe with one and “knock” some sence back into them… :(

I have friends that are quite liberal and one of them, the wife of a friend, almost gets sick when Bush is on TV etc. She hates him with a passion. She is very well educated and a very nice person but Bush makes her crazy. That\'s right, I said Bush makes her crazy. No jokes please.

I\'ve had some, ahem, discussions with her and we quickly terminate them because it will just get nasty.

I hear people that I don\'t know talking about politics I usually walk away. Don\'t get me wrong, I\'d like to tell them how moronic they sound but it\'s not worth it.

Oh yes!  Another instance today.  In speech class today my teacher ask us to announce our name for attendance then make a statement on the debate.  If it was a pro kerry comment she was like ok, thank you.  If it was pro bush she would continue to jar at you, asking why 10 times in a row.  Well this, why?  Well this, why?  In a class that has nothing to do with politics she is trying to indoctrinate us.

Students were even about to start leaving.  A guy said he wanted Kerry to give him a reason to vote for him since he didn\'t like Bush, but that Kerry was very vague in his ideas.  She then goes on to say when was Kerry vague ever, why would you even begin to think that.  For god sakes I hate college teachers.

I\'m having a problem putting the whole situation on paper but you get the idea.  Suprisingly my class is majority for Bush, frankly I\'m amazed.

It\'s silly to be a staunch supporter of either.   America is a conservative nation and these candidates actually AREN\'T THAT DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER in the big scheme of things.  They both want nicer school, better healthcare, and even want our troops to come back from Iraq.  They just have different ways of going about it.

People that will mock a stranger because they don\'t vote the same way they do is just sad.  Mind your own damn business.

So many thing i could agree on and debate but its true that many university teachers are pro kerry and the so-called upper echelon is pro bush. I also hate the fact that so many kids these days are just swinging off Kerry\'s nuts like its nothing. I mean DAMN. Its their bread and butter. Not only that but the swinging gets so hard that its commonplace to HATE bush and every single thing he does. And if you dont, then theres a problem.

Its a ****ing trend to Love kerry and Hate bush among students that dont have republican parents. I mean most of you know that im not all pro bush either but i dont swing on Kerry\'s nuts, nor do i hate every damn thing about bush. These kids are incorrigible.

And then there are those kids that swing on Bush\'s nuts. Half of them are so damn fed up with the damn dems that they are half nuts themselves. I was talking to my neighbor who\'s family happens to be local (and fairly well known) political figures, and out of nowhere one of my other neighbors dumb ass kids comes around how he hate democrats and all this other bullshit. I asked him why he hates democrats etc. and he says because his parents are republicans .

This has to be one of the craziest elextions but its partially because of the closeness of last election that so many people are edgy and hate bush etc etc.  In a sense i cant wait for it to be over but hopefully when it is, things will be in order for both the current and future.

meh.

I got into one really heated debate around the time of the RNC in August. Giga read it. I still get into some heated debates with liberal friends. I\'ve debated with my girlfriend about the war but that\'s the most recent.

I don\'t think either side is doing anything to be "Trendy" and thinking that is pretty ignorant.

With that said, college students are not little kids. If your in college and can\'t deal with some debating without it corrupting your young fragile minds, then perhaps it is your fault.  Political discussion is not bias. But if a teacher cannot realize they ARE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT, they shouldn\'t be a teacher. But that would be a personal issue not a wide-spread issue.

My best bet is you haven\'t been in college.  Especially considering it\'s not a debate when your teacher forces their ideals on you, which is 95% of the time.

I live in Austin and I see a crap load of Kerry supporters, being it is a very liberal city, it makes me sick every time I see a Kerry/Edwards sticker, I even was helping a woman at work once and she had a W with an circle slash through it once, and I really didn\'t want to help her, one for she was a bitch and the other was her button.

Just relate experiences - don\'t insult each other on a personal level in this thread please.  I know it is difficult not to toss out a jab here and there, but please try and keep it to a minimum.

If you really feel you must comment on someone\'s actions, please explain why you disagree with their action - don\'t just insult them.  Thanks.

Seriously, it doesn\'t make sense for you to hate someone because they support a different political candidate. They fact that you didn\'t want to help someone because they were wearing a pin is ridiculous. Why would someone supporting a candidate other than your own make you sick?

Unfortunately it does in this election anyway.  That is why I started this thread - to point how much this election is effecting people and how passionate some are about both candidates.  I wasn\'t singling your post out - I have to edit my posts repeatedly to try not to say the same things some times.  Believe me I know its hard not to post a simple two sentence attack in response.

Anyway, this is good way to relate our own experiences and take a step back for a second to see how we and others perceive what we do.

Umm I never said I hated her, Black Sam, and don\'t go around talking shit to me when you don\'t even ****ing know me from something other than a forum.

And let me further explain it, the woman was being a complete bitch and was being difficult, it further along made me sick to try and help this woman on a stand point of being able to look at her hippy self and think this woman is a complete idiot, not because of her politics totally, but because of the situation I had to deal with her. She wanted to fill in her wood floor and she wanted to match it right, she didn\'t bring a sample, what do you want me to do make magic with nothing. Explain a little better??? I was just going along with the thread, and yes it makes me sick with these people running around Austin like Giga said about the woman in the movie theater, they all seem to be like that, and this woman was one of them, without even speaking I could tell this from her.

Excuse me for equating the fact that the sight of something makes you sick and may cause you to not want to help them with hate. I guess you just intensely dislike people who support a candidate you don\'t.

I don\'t know you from something in a forum but I have read your ideas on various topics which is more than you know about some random person driving down the street and coming in your store asking for wood to fill in her floor.

Bush supporters are pretty wild also. One of my teachers had bumper smashed in with a sledge hammer...Right over the Kerry-Edwards sticker.

I had a customer reject my help because of my Kerry-Edwards pin while at work...the sad part was that he ended up waiting for somebody else that didn\'t even work in my department. When I asked my co-worker what he wanted he said he didn\'t know..."just some special camera" and he didn\'t know if it was the right one or not.

I personally think that theres a point where people get too aggressive. I\'ve met with plenty of Democrats and some of them seem kind of "on the edge" They would bitch and insult any Bush supporter they meet or see.

But we\'ve also been insulted by alot of Bush supporters.
