"Sony\'s PSP is at "high risk" of a substantial delay--into next year for Japan, and perhaps all the way to November 2005 for the US market. That\'s the word from two separate memos sent on consecutive business days from noted industry analysts.
http://adlog.com.com/adlog/i/r=7027...on/dotclear.gif
On Friday, PJ McNealy of American Technology Research published a report that questioned whether the PSP software shown at the Tokyo Game Show--much of which was only 50 to 60 percent complete--would be ready for the Japanese launch of the system, currently slated for this December. "The launch of the PSP in Japan this holiday season continues to be at risk," McNealy wrote. "If [Sony] misses the PSP Japan launch schedule, it could affect the announced March North American launch and would be considered a negative to the video game publishers."
McNealy went on to describe two "likely" scenarios for the Japanese launch of the system. The first was a December launch with a "disappointing" launch lineup of "approximately five or fewer titles." This would seemingly contradict Electronic Arts\' announcement (http://www.gamespot.com/psp/sports/tigerwoodspgatour/news_6108340.html) that Tiger Woods and Need for Speed would launch alongside the PSP in Japan and the US, although McNealy did note in his report that "not all targeted launch titles were likely shown at TGS."

The TGS report on PSP was good but not spectacular and it seems that Nintendo is right on track with the DS...
What do you think?

blah
i don\'t like handheld. If i go somewhere outside, i would likely play something or hang out rather than playing a handheld...unless I am at home where I can play games on the tv or watch video with family or friends...

Sony entered this market unprepared. For one reason I say this, to much adds to the price. They can delay it and hope the price on hardware will come down.
-
True. Coming into this area of gaming came to fast with the psp. Its no surprised that it might be delayed. Same thing with the DS (though nintendo already has the handheld market and knows more about what they are doing).
We still havent heard of a price yet so how were we to expect the damn thing in fall? Makes no sense. I know im not heart broken so w/e.

Maybe..... but not THAT likely. I wouldn\'t be surprised if PSP will launch as late as Xmas 05 ; which may not be a bad thing for PSP.

The U.S. might not see it this year but it looks like Japan will.
PSP: Definitely This Year
In Japan, anyhow.
October 07, 2004 - There\'s been some analyst-fueled concern that Sony\'s PSP portable won\'t be seeing Japanese release this year. Sony Computer Entertainment put that suggestion to rest today through Japanese website Famitsu.com.
The website features an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Technical Officer Masayuki Chatani. Responding to concerns about a delay for the system to next year, Chatani says, "We\'ll definitely be able to launch at the end of the year. Rest assured." He adds, "The state of development for the PSP is far better than it was for the PlayStation at the time."
Of course, this doesn\'t do too much for the few stateside diehards who were hoping for a surprise 2004 launch in America. However, we\'re sure Japanese fans eager to get their hands on SCE\'s sexy new system will take extra care to save their yen in anticipation of a December launch.

I don\'t mind PSP being delayed. It\'s still light years ahead of the boring DS, which I\'m not going to buy.

PlayStation Portable is very much on course for release in 2004, according to Sony Computer Entertainment chief technology officer Masa Chatani, who has also revealed some new details of the device\'s interface.
Speaking to Famitsu this week, Chatani said that PSP would be out in Japan before the end of the year, with a worldwide launch in Q1 2005 - and reminded people that even the original PlayStation launch wasn\'t announced until a month prior to its December 94 ship-out.
"We made release within the year, and our plan to sell the PSP within the year is secure as well, so please be at ease," he told Famitsu. Analysts have raised doubts over those targets though, focusing on the lack of a release date or even a price point and arguing that an early or even mid-2005 release is a far more likely prospect.
Meanwhile, Chatani also revealed a few technical details about the PSP. When booted up, the system will present users with an interface for managing the clock and save files, and a media player for playing MP3s and other media files stored on Memory Sticks, and you can return to this interface at any time by pressing the Home button. Even in-game - it\'ll just prompt you with a Yes/No command box.
The media player itself will apparently use the same Cross Media Bar (XMB) design as the multimedia PSX unit, and load times for booting up games are comparable to the PlayStation 2, Chatani told Famitsu. He also revealed that the process of ejecting discs will be similar to a MiniDisc player - the hatch will pop up a little way and you\'ll do the rest.
However Chatani did not comment on the other weighty question mark lingering over the PSP - battery life. This despite recent reports that Sony would expect developers to ensure their own titles could survive for more than a few hours by giving them battery emulation tools.
Further adding insult to injury, Nintendo\'s charismatic Reggie Fils-Aime took a pop at the PSP from the podium at the DS press event in Seattle - one of the first times Nintendo has had a direct stab at the PSP, which it generally claims it does not consider a direct competitor.

Looks like Sony is set to launch despite reports of hot transistors, a lackluster launch lineup, and the rumored short battery life.

NO...it\'s still being released this year in Japan...

We cleared that up several posts ago and if you would have taken a second to look at the very post above yours you\'d notice a second confirmation...but thanks anway.

No, no Ginko. I don\'t think you get it. It\'s still being launched this year in Japan.... GET IT?

I\'m sorry. :(

HELLO BOBO! :D
Frainky, I don\'t see much point in the PSP. It doesn\'t offer anything more than a portable playstation. Which is what it\'s supposed to be, I know. :p Sure it\'s got really nice graphics, but that tiny tiny screen won\'t make it shine. The Nintendo DS seems much, much more interesting!
-
It seems to me like so so much more than just a portable Playstation. What the hell are you talking about?
Oh, and hello!

Bobo, what are you talking about?
PSP may miss launch target

Depending on which analyst is doing the talking, the picture surrounding the debut of Sony\'s new gaming handheld, the PSP is starting to look cloudy. Right now, the PSP — which will feature a 480x272 4.3" widescreen LCD along with 802.11b and USB 2.0 connectivity — is set for a Japanese launch in December, with the North American debut following in March 2005.
One scenario has the PSP being delayed into next year due to hardware issues. According to an analyst note released by brokerage Piper Jaffray & Co., Sony has not yet solved all the PSP\'s technical issues.
We are hearing that the platform has other issues such as thermal problems (transistors are running very hot) and a very short battery life (90 minutes) that will almost certainly delay the launch.
Yikes! For a handheld gaming console that\'s being touted for its video and music playback abilities, the battery life needs to be much more than just passable. Sony\'s choice to go with optical rather than cartridge media may be part of the issue, as optical drives are more power hungry — you\'ve got to keep the disc spinning to read the data, which takes more juice than reading from a cartridge.
Another possibility is that a slimmer-than-expected library of titles will delay the Japanese launch into 2005, with the North American launch expected soon after. Similar to Nintendo with its upcoming DS handheld, Sony has trumpeted the number of titles coming to the PSP. Those include a couple of big-name titles from gaming giant EA.
Where does the truth lie? We\'ll have a better picture as the launch comes closer. If Sony cannot muster up a decent lineup of titles by the holiday shopping season, they might be better off delaying the launch for a few months. If titles are few and far between, it could cause some people to hold off on PSP purchases, or even go for instant gratification with the Nintendo DS. It\'s one thing to drop US$300 on a handheld. It\'s another thing entirely to do so with few titles (even if more are forthcoming).
If the launch is pushed further back, especially past the summer, Sony could run into other problems. Most importantly, significant delays give the Nintendo DS a bigger head start. While Sony sees the multipurpose PSP as targeting an older, different market than the DS, there is still a lot of overlap. Some analysts are also pointing out that overly long delay would mean that the PSP would be competing with the Xbox 2 for gamers\' attention. If the two come out withing a short period of one another and you\'ve got US$300 to spend, what do you do? Delay or not, Nintendo\'s head start may prove to be difficult for Sony to overcome.

That article didn\'t really have anything to do with what Avvy mentioned, and I questioned him on.

I was addressing your earlier comment...
"No, no Ginko. I don\'t think you get it. It\'s still being launched this year in Japan.... GET IT?"
Look at the very first sentence in the post above Evisceration\'s then look at the post above JP\'s. Both report that the PSP will still be out this year in Japan and that\'s the reason I questioned "NO...it\'s still being released this year in Japan..."

I read every single post, thanks...and I did read your post above mine before submitting my comment. I was just saying...it\'s all good.

"It sometimes amazes me how fast negative information on a console can spread, no matter how ridiculous the information may be. This would be one of those cases.
Currently, there are reports from various “analysts” that the PSP is going to be delayed until mid to late 2005 because of technical problems. With all the attention being given to these articles, I imagine that some of you may want to know how I stand on these issues.
The issues brought up by the "analysts" are rather astounding when you think about it. They claim that the PSP will be delayed because of problems with overheating and battery life. I’m not sure how they came up with these issues- perhaps some sort of magic hat was used to hold mystical paper with sacred writings on them. The truth is, some very fortunate folks know, for a fact, that these reported "issues" are completely unfounded. After reading hands-on reviews from journalists who were able to play the PSP during TGS, it becomes blatantly obvious that these analysts had never interfaced with the PSP themselves and that their research is incredibly false.
One reviewer mentioned, after playing the PSP at TGS for a full hour straight, that there was no affect on the battery level at all. It was noted that the games were being played off of Memory Sticks, not UMDs. However if there was a "serious" problem with battery life, they would have seen some effect on the battery level (especially when these analysts claim a 1.5 hour battery life). Also, during the same review, it was mentioned that the unit was warm to the touch; however the review further elaborated that it wasn’t any warmer than other portable devices. Furthermore, these "analysts" contentions are even more absurd when considering that Sony finalized the PSP hardware (http://www.psinext.com/itex.php?iid=287) weeks ago."

I\'m bored...I guess we\'ll just have to wait and see what the heck is going on with the PSP...it\'s all giving me a headache...

Oh, ok.
I was joking.
Kind of.. making fun of Evisc (no offense, buddy).
I thought that was pretty clear myself.
Sorry. :(

My boss was just in Orlando for some contest he won at work and he said one of the big shots for Sony was there and the guy said that if PSP doesn\'t come out by March 05 that Sony will be "in the red" for the first time in 20 years. Meaning they expect PSP to do big time numbers and are putting a lot into it. He also said it will be $399.99 when it debuts.
