I finally just got tired of it and turned in my notice today at work. Actually what I presented to them was letting me quit and hiring me as a freelance director just for the shoot days. I can do shoot days and a couple extra days for show prep and post for about 1600 per show.
I really don\'t want to lose the show, I just want to lose the day to day action at the office and I want to be able to do other things.
Hopefully he will go for it and hire me as a freelancer. We\'ll see. Otherwise I will just have to look for work that much quicker.
I was very nervous though. My boss is very bizarre. He didn\'t really know how to take it at first. He was very nice and took it well. Kind of shocked really. I really hope he doesn\'t dump me.
My wife is going to put in for 3 different promotions. That will certainly help, but it won\'t be double.
Ho hum. Wish me luck.. You stinky bastards.
-
I was in that position with one of my jobs, I just couldn\'t take it anymore and I had to quit. The job was easy and there were some things I liked about it but the cons far outweighed the pros. It felt like a huge obnoxious fat person had been lifted off my shoulders.
Good luck on the free lance deal and/or job hunt.
-
Now you can spend more time at the beach. ;)
-
Other boards I visit also have people posting that they just quit their jobs, I guess fall does that to people because I DEFINITELY want to quit mine as well.
I sent out a dozen resumes and no one has called yet. :(
Good luck viddy, new house coming and all.
-
well I haven\'t started on the new house so no biggie. We are just getting the plans made. No big whoop.
-
I hope u have better luck finding a job than I do.
-
Been at the same job for three years and just put in for a promotion.
I\'d love to quit, but I won\'t.
-
Work is for suckers. I hate it. I would like to know why you chose this time to do it considering you are building a new house?
-
see viddy\'s 2nd post.
-
Freelance works out real good for some people.
I have no doubt you\'ll be fine.
P.S. I was in Hollywood yesterday.
You should move there cause I\'m gonna and then we can do that gardening show with sarah that we talked about like 3 years ago.
-
Well I just ended up getting a new job. I was going to go to the Marines but that kind of fell through because I opened my stupid mouth. If I ever want to be re-asessed I have to wait 6 months. Anyway I\'ll be working in a wharehouse 12 friggin hours a day untill the next semester of school rolls around. Im hoping I get the night shift, seems like it\'d be cool working at night.

This is my only shot to leave. THey are throwing a whole other series on my lap that will mean humongous stress. They will be shooting 17 shows in 11 weeks. That is EXTREMELY tough. Especially with the lack of staff they have. Their staff is me another guy and another gal. That\'s it. We would have to average a show a week. There is no way.
On top of that I have only had one 3% raise in the past 3 years.
BTW, I just got an email from one of my New York buddies who does the Colin Quinn show and it\'s been cancelled. Last show is first week in November.
-
17 shows in 11 weeks IS rediculous. Not to mention the fact only 3 people are working on it. Thats just plain stupid. Id have to ask for a major raise for that one. If not then you could have been doing you old job with maybe less stress. Then again i dont know how the old gig worked out exactly.

Consider going into the porn biz. :D

You know thats really not a bad idea. I mean he knows how to put a show together. It\'s should be really easy for him to do porn. But he seems way to conservative to do it.

Tampa is a huge porn market. A couple guys on my crew shoot it.
Apparently it\'s really not fun at all. Kind of gross.
Don\'t forget, Anal sex smells like roses when you are watching from home.
-
videoholic, dont u have a journal?
oh wait, thats just the whole off-topic :p

That and ugly :p He could always direct :)

Well, goodluck on the freelance thing or another job :)
But here in Europe it\'s still kind of tricky to just quit it.
I mean, I\'m at an internet company. Not big and understaffed
as well. I\'m more or less their only dude on design...
which isn\'t even my real expertise. But I\'m glad i have
fridays off so I have some more time for freelance portfolio of
3D art. When that reaches an impressive level I\'ll send out
lotsa jobapps.

sheeit everybody is talkin bout casually leavin\' their jobs when they are talkin bout outsourcin\' mine! i will find out within the next two weeks whether i\'ll get the ax or not...bif within that time you don\'t hear from me in awhile and happen to see me on tha street panhandlin\'...try and help a brother out! ;)
oh and good luck on your freelancin\' vid...:)

Thanks, I\'ll need it.

I\'ve had the same job for about 7 years. I have received steady pay increases, merit awards, and every one in our group was just promoted. They just reclassified every one of our positions several steps upward. The most important parts of that change are an 8% increase, and a change to "exempt" status, so we can no longer be paid for overtime. The overtime rule is no change for me because I was never allowed to work overtime anyway. I used to just do it when I needed to, and just not report it.
The money will be nice, but the job has become a little boring after 7 years. I\'m considering a career change to an entirely different field.
-
Well I have had one single 3% raise in the past three seasons.
Yet, I\'ve reorganized the budget and saved the company over 450,000 dollars.
Now they are adding a second show and expect me to do it. I also purhased an edit suite and he expects me to edit the shows too. Whatever. They are about to lose their asses.
-
Hey Core, if you don\'t mind me asking, what is it exactly that you do?
-
Vid: How did you arrive on the $1,600 per show figure? I guess whatever you decided on should be MORE than what you were earning before. As an independent contractor you would be responsible for your own health insurance and other benefits. Most employers would jump at the chance to reduce headcount, I would think.
Bob, I am a corporate librarian. :) I am a member of the professional assocation called the SLA (http://www.sla.org/).
-
Actually 1600 per show is much less than I was making before, but it\'s only for 4 days of work. I was making about 2200 per show before. But I was a full time employee with no ability to make more money elsewhere. I turn down a lot of work. It really sucks.
My company has no benfits other than health insurance and I don\'t take it. I\'m on my wife\'s. So I\'m not losing anything there.
-
You could always ask for a raise. I\'ve asked for one each of the past 3 years (and I got all 3). But i\'m looking for a new job too, seems like everyone is.
-
Good luck, G... you should become Logan\'s manager and pimp his ass out to some fabric softener commercials or a whole franchise like the olsen twins. Then rob him blind before he\'s too old to know better.

Did that back in January. Got nothing.
-
mmmm, Olsen twins...
-
And the Olsen twins are legal now ;)

Well I had a meeting today and things are looking bright. My last day was last Friday so I\'m pretty much unemployed right now.
BUT, I think I am going to finally make real money at this place. It looks like they are going to hire me freelance for both shows now. I bid them 600 a day for studio and then 400 a day for other days. Looks like I may get about 200 days out of them.
Boy that will make me happy.
I\'m going to talk to an accountant about setting up a Sub S for myself.
Any of you accountants?
I want to run everything through the Sub S and then just pay myself a tthe end of the year zeroing out the business. This way I only pay taxes on income after expenses. Should help with Social Security.
Ugh, it was so nice not having to deal with this shit, I\'ll tell ya.
-
Good luck with everything Vid. Hope everything works out for you.
-
Yeah, good luck, Vid.
Definitely talk to an accountant because one thing I\'ve learned is that the man likes to screw those who work for themselves.
