Wow, what can I say, I haven\'t played it, but this game sort of came out of no where.
First off, Gamespot gave it a 9.2. That itself is worth noting because any game scoring a 9.0 or higher from Gamespot is the real deal.
Here\'s just a few excerpts from the Gamespot Review:
This new role-playing game from Nintendo and developer Intelligent Systems is truly inspired. It\'s practically overflowing with wonderful, funny characters, memorable subplots, inventive gameplay, and beautiful visuals, and it\'s lengthy and quite challenging to boot.
This coming from a game that didn\'t really have a long developement time, I don\'t even believe it was announced until a couple years ago. Nintendo scores big, but they could have done better promoting it, it slid under the radar.
On the whole, the world of the game is brilliantly imagined and fully realized: It\'s filled with just about all the weird characters you may have seen in past Mario games, and yet here they\'re mostly just going about their day-to-day business, trying to make ends meet. The effect is reminiscent of Pixar\'s computer-animated movies (such as A Bug\'s Life or Finding Nemo), whose fantastic storybook worlds are believable partly because, in a lot of ways, they\'re mundane--not so different from real life. That\'s exactly the effect that Paper Mario goes for, and it\'s hugely successful at achieving it.
Sometimes it\'s the simple things that make a game successful.
The game\'s storybook look also paves the way for some unique play mechanics, in how Mario actually has paperlike properties in the game. It\'s a level of abstraction that works beautifully in this surreal setting. Basically, Mario will learn how to slip through narrow gaps and gratings, glide like a paper airplane, roll up into a tube, and more. These unique abilities--which he learns in some of the game\'s funnier moments--allow you to gradually gain access to new areas. You\'ll also upgrade your hammer and your shoes during the course of the game, opening up even more venues to explore in the process. The gradual "unlocking" of the world is done quite subtly, actually. You\'ll gain some surprising new ability and then start to notice parts of the world in which the ability could come in handy. Of course, some of these abilities aren\'t just for exploration--they\'re also good for beating the tar out of Paper Mario\'s dozens of different bad guys.
This is what you expect from great games, something new brought to the table, and that\'s what it has done.

I can\'t honestly say I was anticipating this game, to tell you the truth it sort of came to me. I was just parusing around and figured I\'d check out the review, I was amazed when I read it. I plan on picking this baby up on Thursday or Friday. I can\'t judge now, but this game looks like it could rival Fable for RPG of the year. I reccomend this to all of you Gamecube owners, the few of us there may be.
Buy it, Rent it, do whatever, tell me what you think.

I hate all things Mario now...I miss the old school days on the NES. I tried watching my little cousin play paper mario, and I almost damn near slit my wrists to relieve the pain.
I don\'t trust reviews anymore until I\'ve actually played the game myself. And I don\'t even go to gamespot, as their webpage isn\'t the most enjoyable to browse through.

Agreed, Gamespot has horrible navigation for such a big website.
As for the game, I\'m not into RPGs but I\'m glad to see another decent game on the Gamecube. I have to admit mine will stay dusty until RE4. :(

Who expected Paper Mario 2 to fail? All Mario RPG games to date have rox0red my box0rs..
-
In case you didn\'t notice, this game got zero hype.
-
I never dug the original Paper Mario, but that was due to turn based combat..*shrugs* ... I simply cannot get into a game that has turned base combat.
-
Gamespot\'s navigation is great. I never understood how people could have a problem with it. If you have any trouble finding a review or anything of that nature, just bookmark the following page (http://www.gamespot.com/reviews.html). You can organize that however which way you want to and all new reviews end up there. You can organize it by platform, score, whatever. I don\'t know how people find this complicated... Even the url for it is pretty basic.
-
Can you give me a link to both pics and hardware specs of the Gamecube? I was able to find it at IGN in under 15 seconds.
-
This game is out now?
Although I never played the original Paper Mario, I still have my SNES hooked up to my TV in the basement and once every year atleast I camp there for a day or two playing Mario RPG.

Hmmm...probably because the navigation sucks...Just guessing (IMHO). I\'ve never been able to find the things I\'m looking for as fast as let\'s say...ANY OTHER WEBPAGE.
I\'d prefer IGN if they weren\'t so stupid and charged an assload what other pages give for free.
If you\'ve unlocked the magical secrets of Gamespot navigation, then well...I\'m happy for you...(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.computerpannen.com%2Fcwm%2Fcontrib%2Fowen%2Fscatter.gif&hash=c6286500b31c9cb89e0c7d10ee86c6ab0b073091)

Well I hate it now. You use to could select your console. Go to reviews pull down the drop menue and select from a list of games all in alphabetical order. Now I have no idea what the hell is going on. I can\'t find nothing. I just give up now:(

Back to the topic...
The second review is in IGN gave it a 9.1.

But before you shrug off Paper Mario 2 as an uninspired repeat not worthy of your attention, consider for a moment what really makes a great Mario game. Sure, The Thousand-Year Door doesn\'t stray far from the formula, but it oozes fun, polish, and, strangely enough, originality. With nearly every other RPG series out there going for elaborate story cutscenes, twisting narratives, and darker visuals, Paper Mario 2 manages to stand out as something a bit different. Nintendo has once again crafted a game that manages to appeal to two distinct audiences at the same time. Kids can enjoy the intuitive gameplay, colorful worlds, and happy-happy characters, while older gamers will chuckle at the many classic Nintendo references and humorous situations.

Oh and one other.
Gamespy gave it 4/5 Stars.

And when it comes to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, it\'s mostly all good. If you have a history of playing 2D side-scrollers, this game will make you remember just why you loved them. And if you have a soul, then this game will make it feel all warm and fuzzy.
Enjoy. :P

I get so many magazines so I forget which ones, but I saw it rated lower twice.
I heard although it\'s artistic as all hell, it\'s retread and the dialogue isn\'t as endearing as it used to be.
I am surprised the dialogue might be lacking, but the storyline rehash doesn\'t surprise me. Paper Mario was just a copy of Mario RPG... Though I loved them both. :)

ummm I don\'t remember Geno or Mallow in Paper Mario, am I missing something?
-
GMR gave it a bad score and said they did because it wouldn\'t be a popular game for people over 8. This was in a latter issue after the review btw.
The link I gave in my post above, Quddus, will give you all the reviews you need.
I couldn\'t get the hardware specifications like you requested, THX, because Gamespot got rid of their hardware section that they had four years ago. Gamespot deals in strictly games now and any hardware specs would be posted as news articles (all recent hardware related news anyways). That\'s why many of the spec sheets would be missing for the older consoles from there. However, in 15 seconds, I found it on their affiliate and a link to it from Gamespot\'s site via gamefaqs.com. :)

Let\'s see, in Mario RPG, Mario, Bowser, Peach and friends unite through a series of plot twists to fight against a common evil and search far and wide to locate seven stars.

But other than that, they\'re only similar.

Let\'s see, that\'s what every Mega Man game is like. That\'s about as different as Vice City is from GTA III. Probably the same difference there is from Street Fighter II to Street Fighter III. I\'ll go out on the limb and say it\'s probably about as different as GT3 will be from GT4. Oh and Final Fantasy games always have the same story line with new characters.
Your argument sucks.

With such a huge thread about how much other people love it, I figured it\'d be nice if we had some actual forum-goers post if they like it or not... anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Anyways, I like it a lot so far and I\'m just starting Chapter 3. The backtracking that you have to do in some parts (As new parts become available with new abilities) is annoying and way too much like Zelda for my tastes, but so far, it\'s a pretty unique title. The paper elements are used to some nice effects during the game and some characters are more enjoyable then others. No parts have made me "laugh out loud" as yet, but I can definitely see the humorous appeal, especially with young children.
Quirky aspect I enjoy: Luigi pops up from time to time to tell you about his adventures without you and it turns out, he is on a very similar fetch quest just like yourself but he is saving a difference princess for a different kingdom. Go figure. After each chapter you complete, he has a story to tell you and he has new companions to correct his faulty logic from time to time as well. Really well done. I definitely would not mind playing Luigi\'s adventure in a new Mario RPG game featuring Luigi and using the same hub that Mario visits in this game. That would be a joy to play.

I picked it up the other day and just finished Chapter 2. It was such an easy game to pick up in play, I really only got stuck in two parts, and truth be told there\'s a lot of secret stuff to do. The whole having one partner thing bothered me, but it actually turned out pretty cool.
-
If you switch partners when in town, people\'s responses change based on who\'s behind you. That\'s pretty neat. Yes, there are plenty of secrets, but I think a lot of them have to do with just new items you\'ll acquire as you play like a new stronger hammer or a new paper ability. Kind of a cheap way to hide "Secrets" imo.

I got the game last weekend, haven\'t played it. I\'ll try and finish my run in Pikmin 2 first, or maybe Tales of Symphonia.
