Post by: videoholic on October 15, 2004, 06:23:13 PM
DId any of you see it?  Dang I love Jon Stewart.  That guy is so freaking good.  It just sucks that he is so democratic.  BUT, he\'s a bright democrat.  That, I have respect for.

Jon Stewart Bitchslaps CNN\'s \'Crossfire\' Show
10.15.2004 6:43 PM EDT

In what could well be the strangest and most refreshing media moment of the election season, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart turned up on a live broadcast of CNN\'s "Crossfire" Friday and accused the mainstream media — and his hosts in particular — of being soft and failing to do their duty as journalists to keep politicians and the political process honest.

Reaching well outside his usual youthful "Daily Show" demo, Stewart took to "Crossfire" to promote his new book, "America (The Book): A Citizen\'s Guide to Democracy Inaction" (see "Jon Stewart Writes A History Textbook That — At Last! — Features Nudity"), but instead of pushing the tome, Stewart used his time to verbally slap the network and the media for being "dishonest" and "doing a disservice" to the American public. After co-host Tucker Carlson suggested that Stewart went easy on Senator John Kerry when the candidate was a guest on "The Daily Show," Stewart unloaded on "Crossfire," calling hosts Carlson and Paul Begala "partisan hacks" and chiding them for not raising the level of discourse on their show beyond sloganeering.

"What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery," Stewart said. "You have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.

"I watch your show every day, and it kills me. It\'s so painful to watch," Stewart added as it became apparent that the comedian was not joking. He went on to hammer the network, and the media in general, for its coverage of the presidential debates. Stewart said it was a disservice to viewers to immediately seek reaction from campaign insiders and presidential cheerleaders following the debates, noting that the debates\' famed "Spin Alley" should be called "Deception Lane."

"The thing is, we need your help," Stewart said. "Right now, you\'re helping the politicians and the corporations and we\'re left out there to mow our lawns."

While the audience seemed to be behind Stewart, Begala and Carlson were both taken aback. The hosts tried to feed Stewart set-up lines hoping to draw him into a more light-hearted shtick, but Stewart stayed on point and hammered away at the show, the hosts, and the state of political journalism. Carlson grew increasingly frustrated, at first noting that the segment wasn\'t "funny," and later verbally sparring with the comedian.

"You\'re not very much fun," Carlson said. "Do you like lecture people like this, or do you come over to their house and sit and lecture them; they\'re not doing the right thing, that they\'re missing their opportunities, evading their responsibilities?"

"If I think they are," Stewart retorted.

The conversation reached its most heated moment when Carlson said to Stewart, "I do think you\'re more fun on your show," to which Stewart replied, "You\'re as big a dick on your show as you are on any show."

"That went great," Stewart could be heard sarcastically saying as the show went off the air (a transcript of the show is available on CNN.com).

In an era when the media is increasingly fragmented and viewers can surround themselves with programming that falls right in line with their own views, be they on the right or the left, Stewart\'s blast seemed especially on point. It seems fitting that the tirade came on a day when much of the media attention focused on the presidential race was directed at the mention of Vice President Dick Cheney\'s daughter during the last presidential debate, as opposed to the issues addressed at that debate.

He\'s so ****ing smart and he hits you with the irony he finds on the Daily Show. I like him a lot. Rolling Stone did a great interview with him this month, check it out. The interview with Stone and Parker about Team America: World Police (in the same issue) is funny, too.

Stewart is awesome:

CARLSON: Wait, Jon, let me tell you something valuable that I think we do that I\'d like to see you...

STEWART: Something valuable?

CARLSON: Yes.

STEWART: I would like to hear it.

CARLSON: And I\'ll tell you.

When politicians come on...

STEWART: Yes.

CARLSON: It\'s nice to get them to try and answer the question. And in order to do that, we try and ask them pointed questions. I want to contrast our questions with some questions you asked John Kerry recently.

CARLSON: ... up on the screen.

STEWART: If you want to compare your show to a comedy show, you\'re more than welcome to.

CARLSON: No, no, no, here\'s the point.

STEWART: If that\'s your goal.

CARLSON: It\'s not.

STEWART: I wouldn\'t aim for us. I\'d aim for "Seinfeld." That\'s a very good show.

CARLSON: Jon, Jon, Jon, I\'m sorry. I think you\'re a good comedian. I think your lectures are boring.

STEWART: Yes.

CARLSON: Let me ask you a question on the news.

STEWART: Now, this is theater. It\'s obvious. How old are you?

(CROSSTALK)

CARLSON: Thirty-five. STEWART: And you wear a bow tie.

(LAUGHTER)

(APPLAUSE)

CARLSON: Yes, I do. I do.

STEWART: So this is...

CARLSON: I know. I know. I know. You\'re a...

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: So this is theater.

CARLSON: Now, let me just...

(CROSSTALK)

CARLSON: Now, come on.

STEWART: Now, listen, I\'m not suggesting that you\'re not a smart guy, because those are not easy to tie.
Title: Jon Stewart on Crossfire

STEWART: But the thing is that this -- you\'re doing theater, when you should be doing debate, which would be great.

BEGALA: We do, do...

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: It\'s not honest. What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery. And I will tell you why I know it.

CARLSON: You had John Kerry on your show and you sniff his throne and you\'re accusing us of partisan hackery?

STEWART: Absolutely.

CARLSON: You\'ve got to be kidding me. He comes on and you...

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: You\'re on CNN. The show that leads into me is puppets making crank phone calls.

(LAUGHTER)

STEWART: What is wrong with you?

(APPLAUSE) CARLSON: Well, I\'m just saying, there\'s no reason for you -- when you have this marvelous opportunity not to be the guy\'s butt boy, to go ahead and be his butt boy. Come on. It\'s embarrassing.

STEWART: I was absolutely his butt boy. I was so far -- you would not believe what he ate two weeks ago.

STEWART: You know, the interesting thing I have is, you have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.

CARLSON: You need to get a job at a journalism school, I think.

STEWART: You need to go to one.

The thing that I want to say is, when you have people on for just knee-jerk, reactionary talk...

CARLSON: Wait. I thought you were going to be funny. Come on. Be funny.

STEWART: No. No. I\'m not going to be your monkey.

(LAUGHTER)

BEGALA: Go ahead. Go ahead.

STEWART: I watch your show every day. And it kills me.

CARLSON: I can tell you love it.

STEWART: It\'s so -- oh, it\'s so painful to watch.

(LAUGHTER)

STEWART: You know, because we need what you do. This is such a great opportunity you have here to actually get politicians off of their marketing and strategy.

CARLSON: Is this really Jon Stewart? What is this, anyway?

STEWART: Yes, it\'s someone who watches your show and cannot take it anymore.

Its great to see a smart comedian who knows about new and politics abuslutley own someone who co-hosts a show on CNN.  Jon Stewarts one of my favorite comedians. He completely made a fool of the one guy with a bow tie on his own show.

It was pretty funny, but the most amusing thing is Jon Stewart coming across as the populist savior who knows what is wrong with politics.  His only valid point was the coverage of spin alley.  Other than that...  pure Hollywood rhetoric.  The Republicans have theirs, the Democrats have their own - and Hollywood - the haven of Socialism and Communism in the US has their own as well.  Burn Hollywood Burn. ;)

I have no love of CNN and Carlson is an idiot, but Stewart should stick to the comedy - we have enough entertainers that think they are political geniuses.

So your saying that since he\'s a comedian he has no political knowledge? Why do you think the people couldn\'t accually defend themselves? All Carlson did was try to attack Jon Stewart instead of defending his own show. Him trying to basically call the daily show a mockery and trying to tell Jon Stewart he shouldn\'t be talking about "responsibility and honesty" was a joke. The Daily Show is meant to be funny, and it\'s very good at doing so. Jon Stewart pointed out the things Crossfire was doing that was abd, while Carlson basically complimented him about his show.

I simply would have asked Stewart if he had this show how would it be any different, and what questions would he ask John Kerry.

He just came off as another know-it-all Hollywood jerk to me.

Anyway, I never said I agreed with Carlson.  I am just stating that Stewart is a Hollywood Elitist and a pseudo intellectual - there is nothing I hate more.  He could have handled his points in a much better manner IMO.  THX is right - he came across as an ass.

But, you know, as long as he\'s a Hollywood Elitist.

You talk politics to us here don\'t you?
Stewart has talked to John Kerry and other political figures. He is actually somewhat involved in politics.

You on the other hand are on a political forum. I don\'t see how you can criticize his opinion ("think they are political geniuses") When you act in a much more elitest manner, and have A HELL OF A LOT LESS EXPERIENCE THEN JOHN STEWART.

It is just obviously hypocritical.

It\'s the same bs, hollywoood means "in the entertainment industry."  The city itself is nothing special, ever driven through it?

Let me get this straight, you had Mystiq banned from the forum for awhile because he said you was part of the KKK, but you, a moderator turn around an accused a member of being part of Al Qaida? Where in the hell do you get off with this?

DH is right - you complain that Jon Stewart act like he knows everything and you turn around and do it.. He has a political show, like a hundred others  - so what\'s the problem? He has his fans, like Rush has his... Every side has their little saviors and Jon happens to be the Democrat\'s. And as for you complaining about him being an elitlist and opinion not being valid - what are you and what is your opinion?

I think Giga may be in the minority on this one.  I\'m a republican, but I have respect for Jon Stewart. The guy is very very bright.  I\'ve seen every episode of his show since the day he came on board and I saw a couple years before that with Craig Kilborn.

THe dude is good.  He\'s a comedian that you can respect because he knows his shit.

It\'s just too bad he\'s on the dark side.  :)

Where the hell do you get off only posting personal attacks on me LIC?  Yet again you only post in here to attack me.  This is part of your personal crusade and it is not hard that come to this conclusion - check your PM\'s.  You have consistantly attacked me for having an opinion.

I have an opinion and I am entitled to it.  Stewart came across as an ass on CNN.  He wants to be taken seriously, yet he says "look at what channel I am on" and "the show the airs before his is about talking puppets".  He can\'t have it both ways.  The hosts of Crossfire tried to take him seriously and he deflected it with that excuse.  I am not alone in that opinion, but some seem to be not able to take it.  You on the other hand can\'t take any of my opinions - DH plainly said he understood where KRS One was coming from when he cheered when the planes flew into the WTC without expounding on it further.  I don\'t have to reach too far to make that connection.

To compare me with Jon Stewart shows that both you are DH are living in fantasy land.  I am not a national figure am I?  Do I have my own show?  I dont\' go on talk shows spouting my opinions do I?  That is what this topic is about, but once again you have turned it into a topic about my views.  Good job thread hijacker.  Oh and my opinion of his antics on CNN have nothing do with what party he chooses.  If he was a Republican I would have thought the same way.

I understand where he was coming from, yes. I understand what he was saying.

Unlike you, Giga, I live in New York. I quite frequently visit NYC. I understand how large the anti-police sentiment is there, especially among the poor and minorities.  I understand how some of these people could take there resentment for authority and connect it to 9/11.

There is a difference between understanding and agreeing. I understand why he has that opinion. That doesn\'t mean I think his opinion is "Right".

But if you want to be a douche and call me a terrorist becuase I "understand" something, then go ahead.

Anyways, to try and bring this thrad back on topic somehow....

To not think it is outrageous is just cold.  I am skeptical as to if you really do know any poor minorities who spout this nonsense if you are a suburban white boy, but I may be wrong.

As for your weak comparison of Jon Stewart and myself.  We here at PSX2Central are not even remotely in the same league as entertainers.  I am flattered that you would compare me to Jon Stewart - maybe I should call up Comedy Central and ask them for a job. ;)

So for you to compare me to a talk show host is idiotic.  It would be like movie critics having their acting skills compared to the actors they are critiquing would it not?  Jon Stewart came on CNN and I am merely commenting on what I thought of his appearence.

Back to a point from earlier in this thread... :)

I find it hilarious when republicans complain about Hollywood, as if you don\'t suck up their product just like everyone else on the planet.  If we had a civil war, and you conservatives got your own country, you\'d be watching reruns of "Touched by an Angel" and "Gomer Pyle: USMC."  Why is it so hard to find a funny conservative?  All the good entertainment comes from progressives and liberals because we\'re not afraid to make fun of ourselves.  Self-depreciation is a cornerstone of mental health, but apparently conservatives are incapable of it.  I swear, the earth would crack open and godzilla would emerge singing the national anthem the day a hardcore conservative admitted he was wrong about something.  But I digress... :p

It\'s also fun the way you throw around labels like "socialism" and "communism" to dismiss ideas.  You do realize this is 2004, not 1952, right?  Those words don\'t inspire the kind of instant fear they used to.  By the way, you don\'t find me throwing around "fascism" and "totalitarianism" when referring to conservative ideas, do you?  That\'s because I don\'t think in labels, and I would encourage you to do the same.

haha excellent thoughts cored.  The world would definitely be an extremely boring place without liberals, but smarter. ;) *hides*  So thank God people are different.

Is there even a conservative comedian?  I thought Conan was but his family has ties with the Kerry campaign (unsure about Conan himself though).

You are missing the point - no one fears communism and socialism - Hollywood just happens to be full of the people who hold those outdated beliefs.  Hollywood should stick to the entertainment business and leave politics to politicians.

Labels?  You mean like referring to our president as Hitler and Satan?

LIC has attacked you for having an opinion?!

It hurt your feelings Giga?!

Shit, if I went back and took all of your personal insults toward me and put them in a book. It would be as think as your head. And I don\'t give a shit if you think all my opinions are pure BS. According to your logic I\'m entitled to them and it\'s not your job to label me. You dirty little elephant humper! LoL...Just joking with ya.

Jon Stewart came across as an ass?! DUH! He is a democrat.

I love that guy. He\'s funny and smart. Speaking about coming across as an ass, don\'t you think it was rude and "ass" like for GWB to interrupt the moderator during the second debate(I think)? That was a pretty ass hole thing to do.

Stewart was making a point though and you know it! The media is full of shit and only reports the unusual and controversial and that is what he was trying to say. Why the hell would he want to get serious with Kerry if his purpose is mainly to entertain!?

^^Maybe you should take your own advice. It\'s one thing having and opinion. It\'s another thing coming in here and preaching to us in a way that makes it seem like your always right!

On a side note. I watched that episode where O\'reilly came on the Daily show. I was expecting some heavy insults but I was really surprised about how complex O\'reilly really is. He doesn\'t seem like that much of an ass any more.

And vid- how can we be the dark side if you are the ones that have darth vader on your side?

Stewart came across as an asshole.  That is my opinion - deal with it.  This is one of those issues where you can only  have an opinion on the subject.  On the other hand your opinions are often cited as facts by yourself.  You tend more often than not to confuse the two.  Therefore they are worthless.

As a matter of fact you should thank me for even replying to your craptacular posts as no one else does, but that is going to come to an end.  I am out of town and really don\'t want to waste any more time trying to show you facts - as your signature used to say "Don\'t try and confuse me with facts, my mind is already made up."  You have your wish.  I will not be responding to any more of your unintelligent ramblings.

How many times do I have to say this DH?  This is a message board and I do not have a job in which I have a national audience or celebritly status.  Entertainers on the other hand have a national audience use their recognition to try and influence voters with their idiot pundit political commentary.

I am amazed that you continue to try and link my comments on an internet message board to the idiot pundits in Hollywood.  These same celebrities rarely back up anything they say with fact.

I am done arguing this point.  There is nothing more to debate here.  I have my opinion that Jon Stewart came across as a jerk and you have yours...

I just think it is crazy how you seem to believe entertainers shouldn\'t have opinions.

But I guess you can make the point that there status as famous people is unfair if used for political voice.

But wait, what about sons of former presidents? Isn\'t that unfair too? How about billionaires who spend money to voice their opinnion?

Well.......he is a comedian. Thats like getting mad at a scientist for coming across as smart. People think it\'s funny when people make fun of eachother, so he was just doing his job. Everyone except for the people he said the stuff to thought it was funny.

But Jon Stewart is ascociated to poitics and knows a lot about it so his opinions are valid.  Also he wasnt talking about politics as much as he was talking about reporting, which he is very educated in. So I don\'t see how you should think his opinion is invalid when he knows what he\'s talking about. I would understand if it was someone like Lenardo Decaprio or just some actor, but this guy is a news reporter, who knows about politics because they involve his every day life.

And about the rest of your bullshit. I really don\'t give a shit. I post and that is it. If people read it and want to kill me for my stupidity then so be it. It\'s America and it\'s my right to free expression(sometimes) so I choose to use it regardless of what people think.

And to LIC and all of you people that think less of me. I\'m really not as stupid as Giga makes me out to be. And besides I love you all. LIC you are a smart guy. Gman you have your qualities :) and Halberto I still don\'t know who the hell are you.

Vid you\'re a funny guy. And so on...

Stop sucking up to LIC - he thinks even less of you than I do.

Do not ever put words into my mouth. I don\'t have a personal grudge against either of you. I just think you both take this all to serious . You are each other\'s perfect counterpart.

Not that impressed by Stewart\'s preformance. It\'s incredibly obvious that he was thoroughly prepared to launch an all out verbal assault on the show. He took his time waiting then eventually just went for it and it\'s also very clear that the hosts were caught completely off guard. They viewed him as a comedian and when he started going off they were dumbfounded and vulnerable.

Funny, but kind of cheap on Stewart\'s part.

They don\'t get payed to bark out their lame political ideals.

Ex-politicians and most anyone associated with them on their staff in some way go on to be experts in their professions and are given hundreds of thousands of dollars to lecture at colleges and other scheduled gatherings.  It\'s why most every politician never has to work again once they achieve a seat in congress or in the senate or any other political body in DC.  Give a few years -- gain the rest of your life.  Pretty sweet in some ways I suppose.

Aside from that, I think this thread is hilarious.  Stewart was trying to get the point across that news channels have a responsibility to report to the public and let them decide, but instead go right to the spin doctors who constantly try and pursuade the people into agreeing with their opinion.  The fact that he had Kerry on his show and didn\'t ask him "hardball questions" isn\'t anything that should have been brought up or discussed.  Consider the mediums and the outlets for each show -- how could the Daily Show, on Comedy Central, ever be held to the same political standards as a show like Crossfire on CNN?  One\'s almost a smart political satire while the other is a hard hitting argumentative forum for "Discussion" that immediately distory facts with a panel of spinners and sinners.

I\'m just curious how Jon Stewart came off as an asshole when he simply called a few hosts out for not doing their jobs.

Oh, don\'t aim anything at me.  I didn\'t see Stewart on crossfire nor do I really have an opinion on him.  I just hate when some lame actor gets on a commercial giving his opinion on who I should vote for.

With the exception of mentioning how politicians are paid for their services to lecture their opinions, the majority of my post was not aimed at you. :)

All you have to do is click the link provided on the previous page of this thread to view the crossfire segment.  I recommend it.

Thats great though, he had no problem going out there and calling them out on everything.  I avoid crossfire so I don\'t know the reasoning behind all his comments but I got the gist of it.  He\'s definitely too witty for anyones good.

And Ryu, I know you weren\'t, I just didn\'t want to come off looking like an idiot because I hadn\'t seen the show.

I\'m guessing you didn\'t think it was obvious that crossfire was going to try and go after him as well, but they couldn\'t.  They tried with the board they made with the three quotes.  They tried numerous attempts at saying how much he doesn\'t take advantage of the opportunities he has with these big leaders.

I\'m guessing you just didn\'t want to see that side of it.

JUST LIKE THE MATRIX!!!!! :surprised :

I just want some people to understand, Jon Stewart wasn\'t really talking about politics on the show. So stop saying stuff like "actors should keep their mouths shut about politics."

He was talking about new reporting and what the reporters were doing wrong. He was never trying to try anything about which politics were right, who made mistakes, he was just trying to tell the reporters on crossfire they were not doint there job. So all you people out there arguing that he\'s a comedian, not a politician, HE WAS NEVER TRYING TO BE A POLITICIAN!!!

Their attempts were pretty light hearted and weak. I think they only made two tries at it, both after Stewart launched his assault.

They were definitely not going after Stewart in the same sense that he was to them.

I think it was pretty obvious that the guy with the bow tie was planning a full scale attack on Mr. Stewart. He was pressing the issues as if trying to embarrass him or at least portray him as a fake and biased host. The good thing was that they all backfired.
Title: Jon Stewart on Crossfire
Post by: Jumpman on October 19, 2004, 10:51:15 PM
They had a few softball questions that any idiot would expect going into Crossfire. All of bowtie\'s hard knocks came after Stewart\'s little speech in his defense.

Wouldn\'t say backfired either, more like consistently being interupted by Stewart. Although I love the Daily Show, it is pretty biased. He even made it clear on Crossfire that he disliked this administration. Fortunately for him he had the comfort of being able to hide beyind the comedic title of the show while the CNN guys were pretty much put in their place.

So you are saying that Carlsons points sucked.  Well very true.  But you can\'t say they didn\'t try to attack Stewart just because they sucked at it.

And being consistently interupted was done on both sides and it\'s a normal part of that crappy show.

If I cared more for the show then I would have to agree with Jumpman.  They weren\'t looking to rail stewart, nothing was really said until Stewart repeatidly was an ass to them.  Luckily though, I don\'t care what they think so I found Stewart\'s comments witty and to the point.

Also, is this what the world has come to? Interupting and just being an ass in general.

I wouldn\'t exactly call their original meeting a debate, but I doubt Stewart will debate him - I don\'t think Stewart can have a serious debate.  By serious I mean without his usual array of humorous critiques and jabs.

Do you ever watch The Daily Show?  If you do, I would be very puzzled as to why you think he couldn\'t have a serious debate.  The guy is very smart and very funny.  I think he would hold a very good serious debate if he chose to do that... but why should he?

BTW, it\'s possible to interject some humor and still make a serious point.  Just because we\'ve never seen anyone like Bush or Kerry succeed in doing that doesn\'t mean it isn\'t possible.

Stewart makes smart yet funny jokes. Grabbing the audience\'s attention.

The BEST Daily Show episode has got to be

Bush vs. Bush

Talk about humiliation.

I can\'t believe that no one can come up with anything new other than "I like the Daily Show", "It\'s great!" and "Jon Stewart is smart" for days.  A week goes by and no one can post anything else that is newsworthy?  I find it ironic that this is similar to what Jon Stewart is ranting about regarding CNN and other 24 hour news stations in his book and elsewhere.  People (meaning the public) would rather discuss an irrelevant topic such as this for a week instead of talking about issues with the election only 12 days away.

Then again, I am tired of rhetoric. :)

You\'ve got a point there, and I agree with it.

For my part, I have been stuck serving on a jury for a DUI case for the last week, and I have had almost no time to read or post here.  I guess I felt a little relief that there was no burning, important topic in here that I needed to monitor.

Maybe I\'ll create one this weekend.  ;)

Giga, when it comes right down to it, you\'re the only person here that gives a **** about this board. You prove it by being on this form just about all day when you have the chance, and anytime somebody posts their opinions, you\'re the first to hijack the thread and try to immediatley start an argument. After starting the argument, you find a way to degrade them by throwing little insults into your posts. Basically, that\'s why nobody posts anything insightful, becuase they\'re tired of you being right there ready for the pounce every damn time something is posted.

Yeah, we know you\'re pretty smart when it comes to this shit. You can stop repeatedly proving it every damn time you get the chance.

See Yuz.

And that has to do with this post how?  Who have I degraded in this post?  Because I think Jon Stewart came across as being an ass I started an argument?  Oh thats right, I forgot I am not allowed to have an opinion - let alone express it here.

Don\'t use me as an excuse for others indifference.  If this were OT it would be the same - I wonder if you would still be whining then?  Also if people could care less about this forum - explain how it has become the 4th most popular forum and the last one created?  Granted this is a political season, I still don\'t agree with your statement that I am the only one who gives a crap about this forum.  Also, there are many other places on the internet where I can easily get into a good debate without others crying foul if I have a strong opinion on something.

With that - this thread is closed.
