Title: SP2 issues for gamers.
Post by: Living-In-Clip on October 16, 2004, 06:02:38 PM
Head\'s up for those of you who play games and have not installed SP2...There is a rather large list of games that will not run under WIN XP SP2, titles such as \'Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic\', \'Freedom Force\', \'System Shock 2\', \'Max Payne 2\' and many others. If you do decide to install SP2 then check the developer of the game to see if there is a patch for that game, some developers like Irrational Games have yet to release a patch for \'Freedom Force\' and no date has been given for a patch.

Here is a list of the games.

Age of Empires II: Age of Kings
Chess Advantage III: Lego Chess
Combat Flight Simulator 3
Command & Conquer: Generals
Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Conflict: Desert Storm
Dead Man\'s Hand
Earth & Beyond
Elite Forces Vietnam: Special Assignment 2
Freedom Force
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Medieval Total War
Midnight Outlaw: Illegal Street Drag
Moto Racer
NASCAR Racing 2003
NBA Live 2000
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
Roller Coaster Factory
Scrabble
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
SimCity 4
Star Trek: Starfleet Command III
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Starcraft
Tom Clancy\'s Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
Tribes 2
Unreal II
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Collector\'s Edition

Some of these won\'t work due to SP2 new firewall and you will have to configure it to allow them, other\'s won\'t work due to MS tightening up legacy code, one example is \'Freedom Force\', if that is the case then you will need to wait for a patch from that developer.

I know this is old news, but I thought I would make sure everyone got the memo, because I didn\'t. I recently ordered \'Freedom Force\' off of Amazon.com, installed it and went to play it and couldn\'t. After scouring the \'net I finally found out the source of the problem, my slipstreamed SP2, so now I have a game that I can\'t play..A game that I want to play so bad, bad enough that I have considered installing a 98 partition just for the game.

LIC -

I have FF and I just tried it.  It says it isn\'t compatible with "this version of windows", but I clicked continue and don\'t show me this anymore and it worked fine.  The only other thing was when I exited the game an error dialog came up with a dll error - but I just closed.  The game will run with SP2 and all the latest updates.

Secondly, most of those games you have listed are just firewall issues, by minimizing the game and clicking unblock they work fine.  Hope that helps.

Really? Have you applied any patches to the game? You are the third person on all the boards I have read about that can run it, most people can\'t. Mine will load then closes with a message about "ehump.exe" - which Irrational Games says is due to SP2.

Please post any information regarding this issue, I am trying my best to get this running but even Irrational Games offical forums says that it will not run under SP2.

*sigh*

Do you have DEP running (Data Error PROTECTION)? I just came across something on Microsoft\'s site about it and how to manage the DEP for each program. May try tweaking some settings when I get home from work.

I have not patched the game.  This may be part of the problem you are having if you did.  I was reading on Irrational Games forums that people were running into the problem had patched to 1.2.  I don\'t know what DEP is... can you tell me how to see if I have it running?

I like it somewhat.  Quite a few of my fellow CoD\'ers don\'t like it all - they feel that with the addition of tanks it is more like BF 1942 and most who play CoD don\'t like that game.

I just think its something that a player needs to get used to.  The first time I played it, it was too much like BF in that if you didn\'t find a tank to get in you were screwed, but now I know the maps and I know where to get anti tank weapons.  Taking out a tank is a lot easier than in BF.  Basically, I hide in a building and occasionally peak out to see if any enemy infantry is around and pick them off accordingly.  If I hear at tank approaching and don\'t see it on HUD it is an enemy tank.  I then wait for the tank to pass and jump out with a panzer faust or a bazooka and shoot the tank in the ass.  One shot - one kill.

The sprint mode is also nice on COD UO.  You can hold down the left alt key and sprint across an empty street to avoid fire.

I haven\'t seen any strong reason to install SP2, so I haven\'t.  Maybe I\'m wrong, but for the moment I am going to avoid it.  Perhaps future MS patches will work only on SP2, and I\'ll be forced to install it.  Until that time...

I downloaded SP2 then quickly uninstalled it on both of my machines.  Messed up p2p and a game or two I have.  At least microsoft made it easy to uninstall.

SP2 gave me no probs EXCEPT it takes 2-3x as long to load windows. :( :( :(

I hate long boots.  I used to have XP at 30 sec just a couple months ago.

SP2 has some security fixes along with the extra embedded networking protection so as always it\'s a good idea to install it.  You can\'t always blame MS, in many or most cases it\'s the developers that have to write updated drivers for SP2.

Did you ever get FF running?  Just curious.  Did you try running the unpatched version?

Nope and I have tried it on other SP2 machines and the same error comes up. Irrational Games say that it won\'t load with SP2 also. What is your setup? Like I said, you are one of three people who can load it on SP2 and no one knows why.

Argh!
Listen, damnit!
It\'s not the firewall, it\'s legacy coding support with SP2. Irrational Games has released a press statement saying that.
*kills next peson who asks about firewall*

That\'s the thing, I disabled everything I could find firewall related and still no p2p.  I could connect and it would retrieve results, but I couldn\'t download a damn thing.

I\'ll try to put it on my new computer right after a fresh install of XP Pro and see what happens then.
