Title: Might be going to NY, what should I see?
Post by: Samwise on October 17, 2004, 01:41:38 AM
As the topic says, I might be going to visit my bro in NY soon. He\'s in Rochester, but I wouldn\'t wanna go all that way without visiting New York City too of course. :)

But is there anything in particular that I should pay special attention to?

What! That\'s crazy talk! :p

But seriously, I\'d love to see more of the States. But I don\'t know when and for how long I\'ll go, so... but of course a road trip across the country would be über cool!

(BTW Coredweller, if I\'m ever in LA I\'ll look you up... *prays at his Charles Manson shrine*)

NYC is all the more enjoyable if you have things planned out.  Only the smart tourist will get the best experience from NYC on each visit.

Plan to see a Broadway show, read up on how to get tix and hotels cheaper, see the schedules of the tourist attractions, and prepare to try the best food in the world. :)

NY is a pretty nice place, a tad too big if you ask me though (*lives on the boarder to Farmersville*).

When I was there (1994-95) I saw:

World Trade Center, I never went up, the cues were several hours, I did sign my name in the guestbook they had there. I remember there was a huge fountain on the outside, when I stood there some kid went up to the fountain and put his hand in the water, a second later a security guard came up and said “Please don’t play with the fountain”, hmm.
Now I\'d like to go back and visit ground zero. :(

Empire State Building, not the same class as the WTC, but still nice. I went up to the highest point, a very small "cylinder" shaped “room” which you could walk around in and see almost all of Manhattan.

Central Park, very nice area. We only walked on the outside area. Odd seeing such a huge park in a big concrete and steel city.

The "rich" area of New York (dont remember the street name?), we were by the hotel Michael Jackson was staying, I wonder what he was doing in his hotel room? ;)

We also went to the "not-as-rich/fancy" areas, a nice place to find cheap electronics (both in price and quality, I never got that NTSC to PAL converter to work. :P ).

We were going to see the Statue of Liberty but they were doing maintenance work then so we never got there.

The bums, lets not forget the bums. There were lots of them, and sick people laying in the streets with signs? That was kind of weird.
When we got out of the Holland tunnel (I think it was named the Holland tunnel) there was a big traffic jam, so people were running around the cars wanting to wash your car window, anyway this war veteran came up to our car and begged for coins, we and the people we travelled with (another family) gave him $20, he was quite shocked. :)

Lots of other things to see as well, like the huge cathedrals that are located in the middle of the city (they do not fit in), we even found a small Swedish church, Im sure a Dane would be just as welcome as we were. ;)

NY is something I will always remember, well worth a visit.

Hey I\'m going there for a 3-day weekend.  I\'ll be sure to take pics of Sammy and me when we meet up at that abandoned truck rest area with holes cut in the bathroom stall walls.
