Presentation - 7.5
Killzone offers a minimalist\'s menu but a fair amount of options. Progressive scan output would be nice, but that omission doesn\'t hurt the title and its cohesive feel, even if it does start abruptly.
Graphics - 8.0
Killzone boasts incredible art direction. Every level is stylish and appropriate while every character and gun is meticulously detailed. Then again, it\'s also slow running and loaded with glitches.
Sound - 9.0
Amazing music and some very crisp, very believable effects are brought down only by repetitive voices and bad dialogue. Brought down, but not by much. Terrific audio job, Guerilla.
Gameplay - 7.0
Here\'s where it gets sticky. The AI is terrible and the scripted combat isn\'t very exhilarating. But then it looks and sounds so good it\'s often possible to get lost in the war.
Lasting Appeal - 8.0
Provided the technological deficiencies don\'t bother you, Killzone offers a solid multiplayer mode that happens to be plagued by the same problems as the singleplayer game.
Overall7.5
Even though we\'ve established Killzone focuses on cheaply scripted combat and uses its visual panache and aural brilliance to make that kind of combat enjoyable, there are still more problems. The framerate is disastrous and has a serious detrimental impact on gameplay, often leading to missed shots, unobserved enemies, and general disorientation. Also, while Killzone features some remarkable still frame visuals for the PlayStation 2, movement creates some rather serious burps. Characters that don\'t animate facially when speaking in-game is a slight, but the more serious visual hiccups are polygonal seams (the white shimmering or breaking that happens where two polygons meet in an environment) and a really hilarious LOD system.

"teh Hal0 killah" it\'s not but sounds like a decent game despite its\' flaws. Rental? Perhaps when I\'m done with Halo 2 and Metroid Prime 2...

Looks like the typical Euro dissing review again by the USA game site again. :o
-
Reviewed by a Halo fanboy. Not suprised, I\'ll wait for GameSpot, as always. :)
The demo is great fun so I\'ll be getting it anyway.
-
So they should have overlooked the shoddy A.I. and sloppy framerate issues?
-
I think I can sum this thread up.
(1) I predicted Killzone not being all that. Just like \'The Getaway\', the Sony fans will clamor to it and within a month of its release be left confused as to why they waited so long for a crap ass game.
(2) Some Sony fans won\'t accept the fact the game is average at best and will blame the bad reviews on the reviewers citing that they was "Xbox fanboys".
-
From IGN - then this Ivan who reviewed Killzone previews Halo 2 for PS2 IGN WTF? And then a complete 180 from they\'re E3 time with the game, which they awarded PS2 game of the show... mmm.
I\'ll be waiting for Eurogamers review.
PlayStation 2 Game of the Show
Killzone
Developer: Guerilla Games
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Release Date: Winter 2004
If anything, it was a refreshing discovery too, as hype and anticipation are things that are rarely lived up to -- and miraculously, Killzone did.
-
Even the E3 Killzone preview said there were framerate issues, no? I guess they thought they\'d be ironed out by release. Also, I wouldn\'t say it\'s a complete 180, a 7.5 is still a really decent game, it just comes with some notable flaws.
EDIT:

Well if IGN are going to give HALO 2 the perfect 10 then they need to poke the eyes out if the reviewer....
Sub 30 FPS Hooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

That\'s exactly what I thought !!! I\'ve played KZ in the Beta Test and I doubt that the game hasn\'t improved till then.

What Black Samurai said, lol.
The game doesn\'t deserve 9\'s or 10\'s if the framerate is such an issue that it does hinder gameplay. Clipping and poor A.I. don\'t deserve high marks and if you bother to read the review you\'ll find that Killzone possesses all of these traits.

Excatly, why did they choose the guy who wrote a Halo 2 feature on the frickin PS2 side of IGN?
Screaming for attention by raping a hyped game?
I cant see the video review, but some guy said the reviewer actually apoligized for reviewing Killzone based on its hype, any truth to that?
So they should have overlooked the shoddy A.I. and sloppy framerate issues?
Ofcourse not, but framerate should not drag down the score as mush as it did for KZ.. Remember San Andreas 9.9? That game has a pretty horrible framerate in some places, yet an almost perfect score?
Go ahead and enjoy your PS2 Slideshow.
The demo was anything but a slideshow (playing Desert Combat in 2 player splitscreen co-op is a slideshow.). And the FPS is one thing that was improved in the full version?`

When was the last time USA gaming press gave a game a high score which was developed by a European dev of Sony or otherwise ?
European previews have been ESPECIALLY praising Killzone\'s AI. Yes, those include the same Euro mags which were a little sceptic about The Getaway. So they are in no way favouring Sony Europe.
I\'ll see it when i get it. Until that time the European previews look most sincere. IGN reviews like this one, seem a little like a twisted grudge against Europe as a game development region.
Fvck IGN !!!

Here is a quote from the first page of the review...
"Hype did not influence this review. It did not grab this reviewer by the throat and force out an absurdly low or obscenely high score. Hype is not the master of our judgment. If anything, the mysterious entity of extremely positive expectation that floats around the Internet contaminating children might have influenced a reader of this review (or one of our early previews). There\'s even a chance you have bought into the hype and are now glancing over this justification of a 7.5 rating and wondering why Killzone is not the greatest thing ever -- thinking that 7.5 is somehow synonymous with awful. Hype will do its evil to the best of us.
First, 7.5 is a statement of worth. It\'s a rating we assign to quality titles with a fair helping of problems. 7.5 describes a game that could be rented or bought, but should definitely be played by fans, enthusiasts, and casual gamers seeking more out of the genre. That\'s exactly what Killzone is -- a good game with problems that should be played."
Ofcourse not, but framerate should not drag down the score as mush as it did for KZ.. Remember San Andreas 9.9? That game has a pretty horrible framerate in some places, yet an almost perfect score?
I didn\'t play GTA:SA or read the whole review so I really can\'t comment. The reviewer for Killzone said that the framerate does hinder gameplay and that the A.I. isn\'t what it should be. A consistent framerate is crucial for a FPS, and for Killzone, smarter A.I. would have helped.
Has anyone here actually bothered reading the review?

This is absolutely ridiculous unless you can prove IGN has some sort of agenda to bash Euro games.
-
Ok, well.. Like I said, will wait for another review before I say anything else. I\'ve never been a fan of IGN (I never visit it unless I have to) so I don’t hold their impressions that high, I just found their choice of reviewer kind of odd.
If GameSpot gives it a lower score (IGN almost always give a higher score then GS, so if IGN is right, then KZ should receive a much lower score from GS), then I guess its not what people hoped for.
Still I\'ll be getting the game, the demo made up my mind.

Hmm. Ok, so my reaction was a bit too overstated. But you gotta admit that European games under wings of high profile names like Sony always fight an uphill battle when it comes to USA reviewers, only if slightly.
Like I said ; all European reviews are raving about it without getting ridiculous. Truly sincere optimism about the Killzone game.
-
Hmm.. Is this what he said in the video review?
"who knows maybe I am being too harsh becuase of the hype that was with the game"
eh?
-
I haven\'t watched the video review...
Anyway, here is game ranking\'s link for Killzone.

So far there is one other review from PS2 Mag UK dated on October 1st. It received a 9/10.

I have no reason to believe that European games are treated any differently than Japanese or American games when it comes to reviews from any U.S. publications.
-
How about...play the game and judge for yourself??? That\'s what I always do.
-
I guess we all know that someone can\'t review a game on one platform and then turn around and review one on another platform..It\'s...it\'s...well, it\'s just downright terrible. What are they thinking? Having a reviewer review games on TWO CONSOLES? Holy crap! I bet it\'s a conspiracy so that Killzone gets a lower rating by that Xbox fanboy / reviewer.
-
You are on to something: something big!
edit: didnt notice that the m key had stopped working. thank you microsoft (or should i say icrosoft :D )
edit2: here\'s a short killzone vid me and my bro did..

Not sure how anyone can say that a game with shoddy AI and shoddy frame-rates needs a higher score.
Whatever floats your boat.
-
Again...if you play it and you like it, then that\'s just puffs of candy...if you don\'t, you don\'t...go play another game. Don\'t get your panties in a knot because a game you expected to get higher scores didn\'t. Whatever your opinon is, you should go with that...since it\'s the only one that usually matters when dealing with playing games...
-
Perhaps it\'s just the NTSC version that sux0rz. ;)
Anyway, wasn\'t particularly interested in this game but I know many are, so it\'ll be interesting to see other reviews.
-
^^^
And Rachael Leigh Cook is hot...
-
Indeed she is! :D
-
Oh stop behaving like little kids and judge it when it comes out.
I\'m not surprised of the low score though. The game never impressed me much and I seriously hate console FPS games. I\'ll give a chance and rent it when it gets released
-
All I know is that video Fastson posted looks roxorz.
-
Ok, wtf is this crap about ign hating on European devs? That has to be the stupidest damage control I\'ve heard in my life.
-
well we don\'t wanna burst your american bubble eh
-
Wow, just let it go, Knotter. I honestly don\'t know where you got the impression that U.S. game mags/sites are out to get Euro developers.
Back to the review...there is a discussion going on in other forums and somebody mentioned that Guerilla had shipped out an incomplete Killzone three months ago for review and some have come to believe this is what Ivan has reviewed. They say this because Ivan apparently commented on several things he claims were not in the game that are confirmed to be in the final build. Another speculation is that Ivan is a Halo fanboy.
/shrugs
-
If it is the case that he did indeed review an incomplete build of the game, then I hope this complete build looks a whole lot better then this. I just watched the video review and he doesn\'t apologize for his text review, but rather reiterates that although he is bashing the game left and right, there is plenty to like. It\'s just not the complete package that it could have been.
-
IGN loved Operation Flashpoint, a kickass game made in Europe. I thought it was great, regardless of origin.
I knew Killzone was overhyped, Halo killer etc... Just like Halo, the hardware hurts it but the story, characters, and AI make it fun. Only thing is the Xbox haters complaining about 30fps will now be playing under that when they pop in Killzone. :p
-
I got the demo and it looks better than the videos thank god. Not spectacular but its undeniably good. The game plays alright and feels a little bit slow. The aiming felt wierd too for some odd reason - maybe its just because i havent played a console FPS in a long time. Either way it seems well worth a rent.

Ok, I\'m sorry. I apologize, I went a bit too far ranting the USA - Euro thing.
Mmm, this Mr. Ivan is also quite controversial at the IGN Metal Gear boards. They obviously do NOT like him. Certainly becuz of his statement on \'how\' he will go into reviewing MGS3, when he was confirmed as the IGN editor to review Snake Eater.
Maybe he\'s IGN\'s \'Greg Kasavin\'. lol.
But so far most ppl who had playtime with Killzone\'s latest build are nothing but positive...so...
-
I just received PSM2 UK, Killzone got a 88.. A very good score in this magazine, since they are very strict. :)
That’s now a 9/10 in OPS2M UK, a 88 in PSM2 and a 7.5 from IGN (does not count ;) ) .. I remember it being reviewed in a US PS2 mag, but I cant remember the score? Either it was a 4.5 or a 5 out of 5.
-
Yeah, 88 outta 100 seems way more in line with the positive sounds from the latest preview build. I guess IGN Ivan got a crappy \'final\' version then eh.
The mag I read, Power Unlimited is also very positive. They say the game doesn\'t do anything revolutionary, but what it does it does very well and with style. Comparison to Halo is null and void.
They were pleasantly surprised by Killzone\'s mult- player mode btw.
It should be in stores 3rd of December here in it\'s home country Holland ; a slight delay. This is imo indicative of the probability that Ivan did indeed not get the best final code.
-
3rd December? The yanks are getting it tomorrow? :(
Way to prioritize SCEE!

Gamespy reviews Killzone. Seems like this reviewer didn\'t favor the graphical glitches and poor A.I. either...3/5

BEST POST EVER!
anyways, anyone have anyword when Gamespot is going to review Killzone?
-
They just said look for it later in the week.
I\'ve already heard from several people who own it that the game is not bad, however it\'s far from perfect, and from their brief play time with it that they agree more or less with the reviews from IGN and Gamespy.

I will look more into this game, if theres a keyboard chat , ill be more than happy to play it.After having experience Battlefront Star Wars annoying screams of 13 year olds, its time for a peaceful keyboard chat.
Btw i knew and predicted they will screw the scores. They have screwed Way Of The Samurai 2 ratings and many other great games but overhyped the obvious boring ones to ridiculous high scores.
Advise to gamers, read READER REVIEWS instead.

KillZone sucks as much as HALO2 does. 30 fps is plain unacceptable - regardless if smooth or not. There\'s nothing that justifies this. Period. :rpissed:

If you ask me, next generation can\'t come soon enough. Killzone had alot of potential, I hope Guerilla is making the sequel on PS3 and pulls off what they want to.
-
KZs final framerate is very stable, only a hint of slowdown here and there.. Overall I am pretty impressed.
BUT, everyone - every FPS developer that is - should check out Free Radicals work, 60fps makes a big difference.
-

Was that the excuse Bungie used when they brought out Halo1 on Xbox? What about all the other games that run at 30 fps?
MGS2,3, Jak i, ii, iii, ZOE1,2 and many other top quality PS2 games run at 60 fps today - there is absolutely no justification other than the fact that todays developers care more about how good the screenshots look rather than how fluid it plays.
I played Halo 2, it\'s bloody pathetic with the framerate and KillZone is no different, no better in this regard.
-
oh, you\'re such a hardass:p
Come to think of it some Xbox games ran at 60 fps too, Panzer Dragoon Orta and Ninja Gaiden and both of those games, along with the games seven mentioned, look phenomenal.
I wonder what the deal is...
-
Not to mention just about all Xbox games are progressive so it\'s more of a hit on the processor. It just depends on if the deleopers wanted this effect there, or that texture there. I guess they opted for the pretty screenshots as you say.
Timesplitters on the other hand was a 1st gen PS2 title and it ran 60fps (someone correct me if I\'m wrong). The tradeoff of course was that the graphics looked childish.
-
TimeSplitters 2 is 60 fps too.... the difference is night and day. Seriously, the age of the hardware shouldn\'t matter. Developers should pursue different and more efficiant ways of achieving better graphics and gameplay innovations without substituting framerate.
There\'s simply should be no excuse. You might as well ask yourself if you\'d be happier playing GT4 at 30 fps with better graphics or as it is at 60 (of course, take into account that at 30 fps, you\'d no where have the same simulation feeling and accuracy).
-
Well...um...Halo was originally a PC game meant to run on the PC (before Microsoft and their big wallets changed this). It\'s just like Doom 3 being made for the Xbox...it\'s going to suck @ss in comparison to the PC version. I don\'t even know why they did this, as they had to completely make the game suck graphically to make it compatible with the Xbox. At least I think this is the same case with Halo. 30 FPS is fine if it\'s steady, as the eye can only detect this many frames. What is more advantageous about higher frame rates, is that, even when there\'s slowdown, the human eye can\'t detect it if the frame rate stays above 30. But once it dips below that, it becomes VERY noticeable.
-
True, the FPS will always be the PC\'s genre. It\'s sad we have to limit ourselves just so these great games can serve he mainstream. ;)
And just fyi Halo was originally meant for Mac before Bungie tanked. I\'m betting those guys were Apple whores and as fate wouuld have it MS had to bail them out.

This is incorrect. 2 minutes of Google:
http://www.daniele.ch/school/30vs60/30vs60_3.html
-
It\'s the difference in nature of the real world vs. computer world.
The Incredibles playing in movie theaters is only 24fps but they use motion blur to fill in the shots between the frames. Computer games don\'t do that, so what we see are perfectly rendered still images that appear choppy, which our brain interprets as fake.
As an example a hand moving in front of your face really fast is blurry in the real world, in the gaming world the same thing moving less than 60fps is choppy.
-
It all differs per game. Say, racing game A at 30 f/ps plays very well, while racing game B plays crap at 30 f/ps. I think more factors than given framerate of the engine, determine how well a game plays.
Feeling of controls, quality of the animation or mo-cap data,
v-sync or not, some pop up or none, visual reference points etc.
Some example which i find to play very smoothly at 30 f/ps :
- PGR2
- Splinter Cell 1
- Ico
- Silent Hill 2
On the other hand EA\'s F1 games play like total cr@p. I don\'t care if EA says it\'s 30 or 60 ; their F1 games are imo just cranked up choppy slideshows. Sure, the screenshots look pretty nice....but that\'s all these games have going for it.
MGS3 is rumoured to run 30 as well, but going by the ingame footage i\'ve seen it looks incredibly smooth at 30 f/ps. Now..the Killzone demo I played was OK concerning framerate, not superduper smooth but far from horrendous.
:thepimp:
-
^^^^^^
I think you\'re just making things up...
-
What\'s that\'s supposed to mean ? WHy should i make that up ?
-
Just bored I guess *stops being an @ss*

Is the framerate that bad!! It\'s a shame. Oh well back to Halo 2. If someone can convince me to buy Killzone, please tell me that the framerate is decent! Also tell me the A.I is good, I have been looking forward to this game for along time. It\'s too bad the reviews have been bad.
-
The game is very scripted and i dont think you\'ll find many itelligent bots. Im not too sure about the framerate, because ive only played the demos but everything else you wanted to know about seems mediocre.
Maybe its worth the rent but other than that it seems unlikely that its worth a purchase.
-
Why would the framerate for MGS3 be taken down to 30fps?

The framerate isn\'t that bad, the game is still playable. It does get choppy and sluggish quite often, and it has affected some of my shots.
The A.I. is laughable, bordering on ridiculous. It does get slightly better when you put it on hard though.
The atmosphere the game creates is almost great, but it\'s junked up by the frequent tearing and the LOD system which reacts far too slowly. The character animations are awful.
Okay, so I just trashed the game but I want you to know that I\'m still wanting to play more of it, so there is some fun to be had despite the problems. Definitely worth a rental.
It\'s a shame Guerrilla didn\'t push this off a little farther and address all these issues, it really could have been something special. I\'ll be checking out the sequel...
-
That\'s what I was just thinking. Just watching that video Fastson showed looks great. And if they had have delayed the game again to improve it..
Hopefully the sequal will be something special.
-
Certain games can run fine at 30fps, without a big difference.
Some can\'t.
It really isn\'t all that hard.
Racing games and FPS both benefit from the extra FPS. They also are two of the genres that take the biggest hit if the frame rate isn\'t a constant. What is so hard to understand?
-
Collectors editon will be mine http://www.killzoneps2.com/index_en_GB.html :D
The PAL version got a 93/100 in Gamepro and a 9/10 in OPS2
-
I might pick it up. The game has a total war atmosphere, they should have delayed it and fixed the bugs. I think I\'ll pick it up. There\'s no reason why they should of rushed it because of Halo 2. I probably will enjoy it.
-

The framerate runs at a steady 120 and the AI is incredible. I mean if I throw a grenade they\'ll pick it up and toss it back at me! Sometimes they even take bullets for eachother and have amazing accuracy. They also cover their back very well. The game is amazing! You should definetely go buy it.
Happy? :)
-
The more I\'m playing the game the more flaws I\'m seeing.
The squad based missions could have really taken this to another level of gameplay, however, for the most part, the friendly A.I. is useless. They get in my way more often than they help. Running into open fire, not helping to secure a room but rather wait for me to do it myself, and it just doesn\'t feel like a real team in a war because they do some really stupid shit.
The enemies are far too accurate with their shots, I\'m finding that they rarely miss, even at great distances.
The target goes red over an enemy but it doesn\'t mean you\'ll hit them. I\'m also finding it hard to make headshots, the kickback on the weapons make this especially hard, most of the time sending your bullets everywhere except the center of the target.
Zolar, I highly recommend renting it first before you drop $40-50 on it.
-
SHIT! The game shows so much promise. I wish they would have delayed the game! Why did they have to release the game close to Halo 2! I\'m gonna rent it first. I buy games that get a 7 or more, I don\'t expect perfection like many gamers demand. I remember EGM gave Gran Turismo 2 perfect 10\'s. I rushed out to buy it and was totally disappointed. The Graphics were kinda crap, pixels, framerate, etc. I hope I enjoy Killzone and eventually buy it. I have all the consoles and I would place the PS2 and XBOX as excellent gaming consoles, Gamecube has been a little lacking in the gaming department. I am excited about Jak3, and Ratchet&Clank U.Y.A. So overall I\'m a happy gamer.
-
Thats bad.Didnt expect to see such bad reactions.I playied a demo and I was impressed with it.
The graphics where extremely impressive for a PS2 game
