Title: Pushing beliefs?
Post by: Titan on October 31, 2004, 04:35:31 PM
I was working at register yesterday at work and I rang this older woman up. She handed me the money and said "and heres a pocket calender with a word from God to you". I was really offended, being athiest. I really don\'t appreciate people pushing their beliefs on me or anyone else. I would have said that I was offended and athiest but I really didn\'t feel like getting into a fight with an old woman in the middle of a drug store with my manager right there, so I just said a more sarcastic thanks and threw it under my register until she left. The calender was 2004 and my manager was making fun of her after she left because there are only two months left. I just threw it out. What do you think? What would some of you have done (question more for the athiests/agnostics)? It really did put me in a kind of bad mood last night. I got over it a couple hours later of coarse :)

Um, why not just say thank you and move on. Not that big of a deal in my opinion.

I wouldn\'t call that pushing her beliefs on you and I\'m sure she meant no ill will to you.  Now if you said I\'m athiest and she started telling you that you must convert to save your soul, well maybe you have a case.  However, she didn\'t, and I wouldn\'t even give a second thought to it.

Exactly, seems like the mature thing to do.
He is young though

Or those people that bother you when you take your little brother trick o treating?!?

WTF?

"This isn\'t the way to Jesus you know"
"you should be in church rather than spreading satan\'s evil"

STFU!

Damn, five year old kids don\'t need to know all of your apocalypse bullshit for god\'s sake!

I would have said thanks...and moved on. I have this happen to me all the time...I just get used to it. No use making a big deal out of it. You did fine.

It is definatly the mature thing to do. And it upsets me that you took it that way. Look at it as a nice gesture from a woman that could have told you to eat a d!ck if she felt like it, she wasn\'t pushing aything on you, if she said that if your not a christian you go to hell, I would consider that pushing beliefes.

Thats what I did. Said thanks, threw it a bit under the register, talked about it with a couple kids and got kind of a laugh out of it. I did get over it easily though but at the time I was offended. I would have said I was athiest but I realized she would have thrown a hissy fit. One kid at work wore black bracelets with this symbol on it. One woman said he\'s "a bad kid and needs to find Jesus". I guess this happens when you work in retail.

I guess you are right. I did think it was a nice gesture from one point of view but one day she will probably offend someone and he/she will speak out.

Wasn\'t really making a big deal about it. Just posted it wondering what others did/would have done about a situation like this Told a couple kids at work and we joked about it. Now, Jahova\'s Witnesses are notorious ;)

where do you live dude? the south?

I\'ve got the gauged ears, spiked hair, tattos & basically look like a skater. I\'ve worked at different retail stores for the past 5 years and haven\'t had an experience like that.

Exactly.

The poor lady just gave you a flimsy pamphlet. I think I got at least twenty when I bagged groceries. Don\'t blow it out of context.

Well, I guess I\'ll side with Titan on this one. It has happened to me as well (though with the Watchtower) - and I just said thanks and wasn\'t offended - but I can see why Titan didn\'t want her to give him something that SHE believes in, but he DOES NOT.

How would she like it, if he handed her a satanic bible? Then I bet you byatches would cry about it as well.

If someone handed me a satanic bible I\'d just say thanks.  And I go to church every Sunday.

I would have said thanks, take it, and tell her to have a nice day. I\'ve dealt with so many bitches/obnoxius customers at Gamestop when the lines get long, I just stay calm and think I\'ll won\'t be seeing these a-holes again, at least till they want another game. Being nice to people does alot of good, even though you are secretly burning up inside.

how do you know it wasn\'t just an opurtunity to clear out some space in her purse? ;)

and if she comes back and does it again...feed her the pimp hand..

ya know, or not...whatever you feel comfortable with.

Then she should have given me her money and credit cards. That would free up some space ;)

My neighbor holds hands and prays before meals.  That\'s all fine and dandy, but they do it at our house too.

I made Logan say grace last time they were over because I don\'t like doing it.

Logan did it and at the end he said "Amen, Poopie!"

I tried so hard to not laugh.

I would have said thanks and read it.

My religion is no to have one but to learn about all of them, screw them all.

Aside from Athiest I look at religion as something to comfort you in death, when you die you think your going to heaven & that gives you a sense of comfort in knowing you\'ll live on in the afterlife

So technically I\'m an Athiest but dont get all butt hurt when people influence anything on me.

That\'s a pretty good idea! Gonna stock up on some anti-religious stuff and hand it to the morons that ring my bell and give me the God bs.

You guys need to loosen up. Whatever floats their boat eh. The story didn\'t sound like she was REALLY pushing it.

I don\'t practice any religion either and I don\'t have any troubles with religious ppl.. at least they\'ve never pushed that upon me.

I must confess though, that when I\'m really feeling very down i sometimes...... sometimes, I do kind of look up to the night sky filled with twinkling stars ;) and ask for a little bit of help.

I\'m totally with you Titan even though your view has almost changed 180 over the course of this thread.

I hate this more than anything. Belive what you want to belive but dont expect me to and dont expect that cause you belive something is wrong that it should be wrong for everyone.

I personally would have handed it back to her and said " No thanks I\'m not a follower of sheep. You should hand this out to someone who might enjoy it for the whole two stinking months left on it you cheep old jesus humper"

I have friends that are Jesus freaks and really religious and they sometimes push their views on them and then I get defensive and push mine back on them. Kind of hypocritical but it happens. I don\'t just come out of the blue and say "YOUR WRONG BIATCH". I don\'t like it when people push their views on me nor do I push my views on them....until they push their views on me ;) Believe what you want but leave me alone (in a belief stand point).

How does the mention of God offend you? I consider myself agnostic, but I never get offended by anything. That\'s ridiculous.

Getting offended isn\'t ridiculous...we all react differently to certain things.
