I have a feeling this issue is going to be one that most of us agree on.
"Family Values" organizations like OneMillionMoms.com and OneMillionDads.com have threatened to file thousands of complaints with the FCC against any ABC affiliate that aired the uncut and uncensored version of "Saving Private Ryan" last night. They claim that the film\'s graphic violence and frequent use of the F word and S word should not be broadcast during prime time hours in the United States. The film has been broadcast in this form twice before with no backlash, but this time the extremist organizations think they can use the FCC\'s strict new rules against the hollywood establishment.
I\'d like to know how long we\'re going to continue to pay attention to these absurd middle-american family values nutcases who don\'t understand the difference between Janet Jackson\'s breast and a historical drama espousing the beliefs and ideals of sacrifice our nation was founded on.
I\'m trying to post the text of an article from one of the entertainment trades, but I haven\'t been able to get it yet. I\'ll post it later.

One of the fellows from monty python has a great song about the FCC.....
-
Cord, wouldn\'t it be funny if this thread was locked coz you were complaining about censorship?? But yeah, I agree with you. No one complained when they aired the uncut version of "Schinler\'s List". That was on par with Saving Private Ryan as far as graphic violence goes.
-
Then I would unlock it because I am the FCC in here. :p
-
I would actually prefer if they censored out the profanity, violence don\'t care about it in this case because it doesn\'t glorify it in anyway like an Ahnuld movie would. Don\'t want the kiddies coming up to their grandparents and going F*CK SH*T hehehehe!!
If you want to hear the curses so bad just rent the DVD. :)

The profanity is one of the characteristics that reinforces the reality of the events depicted. If your buddy dies at your feet, you\'re not going to say "oh darn." The sense of reality is what makes this film great, and separates it from all the gung ho war movies of the 40s and 50s. Editing or bleeping the profanity would totally undermine the impact of the film.
I feel that shielding kids from profanity in a teen sex comedy is probably a good idea, but shielding them from the same words in this film is ridiculous. Context is everything.
-
God damnit. This movie isn\'t for kids anyhow. It\'s a simple matter of them changing the god damned ****ing channel. But while we\'re on the subject, why is **** and shit censored here huh?
-
Yea I always found that hilarious. Another forum I go to complained about profanity in media but when they tried to make examples it would turn out as
****
****
and how can I forget
*****
I can still say F*ck and anyone can easily get the impact of what I was trying to say. But hey if you don\'t like it why not just go to a different webpage? *flamesuit on*

:D in this version of VBB, I think putting VBB tags between the letters effectively circumvents the autonazi. observe:
****
woohoo, it worked. :)
-
I actually don\'t know about the censors with the swearing either. It\'s a part of our culture.

Core for FCC Chairman :) I totally agree with you. The curse words are everything in a war movie like this.
These "family values" groups are up there with PETA on my most hated organizations list. I mean, you have such a problem with it, DON\'T WATCH IT and DON\'T drag down those of us who want to watch it. Its the same group that tries to get video games banned.
-
Stuff is censored on tv all the time. I don\'t see a problem with it. If they tried to censor it on a pay channel like HBO, then that\'d be different since people are paying specifically for that original content.
When shows like South Park curse up a storm, I\'m surprised censors let that slip.
Either way it doesn\'t make a difference I guess.
I won\'t be watching it anyway. I\'ve seen it before. ;]

Southpark is on cable. FCC doesn\'t have the authority to govern cable channels because the viewer is paying to watch it.
FCC only governs the open airwaves which obviously just includes the networks.

Can\'t they curse anyways after 10?

I\'m pretty sure it\'s Midnight...hence why Comedy Central shows The Southpark Movie at Midnight for what seems like 3 times a month.
See Yuz.
