Title: Colin Powell resigns
Post by: Black Samurai on November 15, 2004, 07:09:20 AM
Story Here (http://www.local6.com/news/3918352/detail.html)

This is pretty weak because I always felt that he was the person with the most integrity in the administration. He seems like a pretty good guy.

He and Rummy didn\'t get along.  This was expected.  Personally, I would have rather seen Rummy leave.

Wasn\'t Colin Powell the one who recently made a controversial statement about Taiwan needing to reunite with China?  Ah yes, here is a link from your favorite new source, Giga:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,136711,00.html

I certainly like Powell much more than Rumsfeld, but he did have a tendency to make off the cuff statements without considering them carefully enough.  To me this was a major blunder.  Taiwan is a very important ally for us, and we need their friendship.

Major blunder?  You have to be kidding.  Powell\'s major blunder would be considered his statement on Iraqi WMD\'s at the UN.

Taiwan comment?  Isn\'t even on the radar.  Also China > Taiwan when it comes to diplomatic and economic relations with the US.

Agreed

It would of been nicer if he was still around in 4 years so that he could throw his "hat" into the Republican leadership race.

:(

Now that He\'s gone and the fact that Bush has this HUGE base to do what ever he wants thanks to Vote 2004.

Things are looking DOWN.

Ah well there is always the draft to look forward to ;) :P.

I agree the UN presentation was worse than a blunder.  I remember you talking up all the great "evidence" he presented, and me saying how it was not evidence at all... but that\'s another story.  ;)

I think our relationship with Taiwan and China is a little too complicated to be reduced to "China > Taiwan."  All those years when we proclaimed China to be the great evil during the cold war, we supported Taiwan because they were the democratic refugees from a seething flood of communism.... or however they described it back then.  In the decades that followed, Taiwan built up a world class electronics manufacturing industry, and a labor pool that is used to great benefit by american corporations.  They are an important business partner to the United States, no matter what their UN status is.

Now I guess we don\'t give a shit about them anymore because money talks, and mainland China is simply a bigger market?  To me that\'s bullshit.  If China ever takes over Taiwan, they will walk in with a very long execution list.  I promise you, it will be VERY ugly.  It will not be like the absorbstion of Hong Kong.  Many of the original enemies of PROC\'s communist revolution are still living there, and the party has a long memory.  We owe Taiwan at least the respect to stay neutral on this issue, as we have been doing.  Powell said Taiwan was not a sovereign nation, and should unify with China.  That is not our place to say.

The only reason it was a blunder was because of bad intelligence - it personally wasn\'t his fault as others around the world believed Saddam possessed them as well.  I still believe Powell was correct by stating the UN was unwilling to enforce it\'s own resolutions.  I could also go into you needing more hardcore proof than that and how I believe we need to be proactive as opposed to reactive, but...

Regarding our past with China - you must be in the pre-Nixon mode of thought again Core. ;).

Tiananmen square happened well after Nixon\'s term ended, if I\'m not mistaken.  China is a country that has bought into the idea of a controlled free market economy, only so long as it does not interfere with the current leadership\'s authority over all political and military power.  In those areas they have changed their ideology little in the last 50 years.  Their political enemies in Taiwan are a direct threat to that authority.

I am sorry Core, but I agree with the long standing US policy of one China.  I haven\'t had the priviledge of a Taiwanese girlfriend to persuade me otherwise. ;)

DAMN YOU!!!!    Man you saw through me!  :p

OK, fine my perspective is a little biased, but that doesn\'t change anything.  Taiwan is still our friend; just some of us are a little friendlier than others.  :)

I always liked Colin Powell for sentimental reasons. He has good leadership qualities,  very dependable IMO.

Rummy is good too, though.. although in a different, almost snide kind of way!

From the link
National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, one of President Bush\'s closest counselors, will be nominated to replace Colin Powell as secretary of state, ABC News has learned.

Senior administration sources confirmed that Rice would be Bush\'s choice. The news comes just hours after the White House announced Powell had submitted his resignation.

Energy, education, and agriculture secretaries also resigning (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6492183/)

why is so many people fallin off the bush chain?...you\'d figure that since in one way or another you fought to get bush re-elected, you\'d hang around for another term...powell,..i seen his resigination a long time ago..as he didn\'t really get along with some in bush\'s camp..but all these other people? it\'s almost as if there\'s some type of scam waiting in wings or something just by the way these people are quiting....

It is time for something new.  Now he can populate Washington with members of his original cabinent.  Excellent plan... excellent...  These people that he is replacing them with are very loyal and have the same mindset.  I hope it makes some of you afraid. ;)

^^^I don\'t know how something like that wouldn\'t make EVERYONE afraid.

There is really no legitimate reason anyone would want Bush to have carte blanche when it comes to policy. NO reason. Tell me how having Bush in office, surrounded by likeminded cabinet members, benefits you in the long term(or short term for that matter).
