Wasn\'t it released in the US in Oct of 2000?
Still no problems with mine. The vents are all clogged up with dust and runs.
Anyway, I thought this would be a good way to start talking about the comparison between the PSx and PS2. Around PSX\'s 4th year, the PS2 semi-rumours and intentional leaked news were abound. Sega\'s Dreamcast was about ready to ship out and Microsoft\'s thunderous news was still a few months off (after all, they had just helped out Sega with the DC).
By the time Dreamcast was launched in the US, PSX would have its hands full against the mighty Dreamcast. Graphically, DC was unmatched. Gameplay wise, it was on par with Sega\'s typical AAA games of the past. However, the majority of buyers were casual gamers and Sega\'s name just didn\'t have that luster it once had. Because of this, millions of casual gamers were waiting for the PS2 and just didn\'t give DC a chance. One thing for sure, DC sold more units than any other console previous but that would soon change when PS2 was launched. I believe 300,000 units were sold in its first day. That\'s more units than PSX and Saturn combined in their first year.
The night before PS2 launched, it was a media frenzy. Roving news vans would stop by every major department store and interview gamers on their all night vigil to get their PS2. And what was funny was a lot of them were casual gamers. I stood in line with people who had no idea what Final Fantasy was. A lot of entrepenuers were thinking eBay and man, did they make a killing! :D
Fast forward to today : no concrete spec sheets for the PS3 whereas by PSX\'s 5th year, the PS2 was about to launch in Japan. Xbox shares the same shelf in many gamer\'s homes with the PS2 and they\'re all waiting for the neXtBox to be released in less than a year\'s time while PS3 is still slated for late 2006.

Got mine on launch too. Had to clean open it up and q-tip th elens once and it still has a nagging problem with memcard slot #1, have to jiggle it sometimes for it to read.
Sold another on ebay for $450. It was my first auction so I didn\'t get as high as other people with my 0 feedback.

I think I got mine on or about the time of my birthday in 2001. A couple of days after, I did a search for PS2, and this place came up.
I hovered about for a few weeks without actually joining, until I made the big step and joined, on the 13th december 2001.
I\'ve not had any real problems with mine either, in fact, the only time it has ever give me jip, is in the last few weeks with GTA SA when it tries to load the game data from the memory card, and it hangs.
It only does that on the very rare occasion though.

I missed getting a PS2 on launch by 3 ****ing people.. THey had 201 and I was 204, :-/

I was lucky #36 out of 60 PS2\'s. :D
My fiance at the time went to another store and was #52 out of 55 PS2\'s! Talk about CLOSE! She felt so bad for the lady who was the 56th in line.
I think Sony could only muster 500,000 PS2\'s on launch day. I remember seeing the news that night about people stealing PS2\'s from those walking towards their cars. No wonder the security asked me if I wanted escort - coz the glass doors outside of the store looked like a scene from Dawn of the Dead. Everyone was peering in to see if there were any left. I thought about getting an escort but there were so many of us PS2 owners leaving at once, I didn\'t worry about it. :D

I got my first PS2 at PAL launch which was October 24th if I remember correctly. It kinda broke down at the end of 2002, but not becuz of lens nor fan problems. The disc tray engine died.
So, I decided to buy a new PS2 and I had the old PS2 repaired half a year later only to sell it a few months after that.
Right now, my current PS2 still works very fine. But I sold it this week. The transaction will be monday.
So, with the money that makes and some more I can buy a new PStwo.
The problem however : They\'re NOWHERE to be found in stock ! :eek: There\'s like 7 stores which sell consoles and videogames in my town. Every place, store ppl tell they had new batches this week and they were sold out immediately !
I guess I\'ll have to pre-order one then eh :mad:

I think Sony is holding back on new shipments until all the previous models are gone. The slimmer PS2 should be out soon.

^ yeah exactly, stores still have the big PS2\'s but the small n slim PStwo\'s were sold out of stock like crazy.
So much for ppl complaining the economy is down eh...

Thats how I got here too, about that time too, I got mine in June of that year, and found this in Sept.

I just bought a new one a few weeks ago because it was playing up. Glad I bought one when I did because nobody in my area has any in stock any more. :eek:

got mine pretty much on the UK launch, everythings clogged and it sounds like a horse in a dentist\'s chair but it still works :D (touch wood)

I got mine on launch and it ended up broken, because i take it with me everywhere, so in July of 2003, I had to get a new one and haven\'t had any problems at all...I dont know what number I was or anything...

I\'ve had mine since December of 2000. Also no problems yet. I had dust in my vents, but I used my vacuum with the hose attachment, and that solved the issue.
I still have my Dreamcast, but the incredibly loud grinding noise that it makes is rather annoying.

That\'s pretty cool. I got mine for Christmas...and they were sold out everywhere, so I thought I wouldn\'t get one. I was X-mas shopping with my family, and I heard on the intercom "WE have 2 PlayStation 2\'s left"...and I was like CRAP!! But I didn\'t know my dad ran to the electronics section all hella fast, pushing people out of line and whatnot. I was surprised when I opened up a PS2 game...I was like WTF? And they\'re all like...we just got you a game for now until we can find a PS2...and then they gave me another box with a PS2 in it, and I was like :shocked: That was kind of cool...
That\'s my lame story...

I got mine on launch and it broke a few weeks later. They sent me another one, and I haven\'t had an troubles since. :D

Heh the story about how I got my ps2 always makes me smile.
I worked at one of the places that sold ps2\'s (a lot like best buy) and there were very few units and I was banned from buying one because I worked there, however since everybody there knew I was the game freak I was given the chance of buying the last ps2 given that it wasn\'t picked up (pre orders).
Well the last one wasn\'t picked up, so I picked up my wallet and was gonna go buy me a console. Then the manager walked up to me and told me that he had sold my console. I was angry since I was promised that I would get the last one. Turns out the president had bought my ps2......I didn\'t vote for him in the next election.
Anyhoo, I got the first one out of the next batch a week later.

I waited 3 years before getting my ps2. Although still enjoyed playing them at my mates places. Ended up with a V7 model. Haven\'t had a single problem with it.. I got DC pretty much as soon as it came out.

I got my Playstation 2 in November 2000. I had no troubles what-so-ever ( except that I had to drive about 40 kilometres to get my console, if that can be counted as a problem ). The local shops got around 2-3 units each, so they were all sold out before I got out of school.
I traded the console once GameCube launched, though, only to buy it back last summer ( a newer model-no., a more silent version ). I\'m currently enjoying GTA: San Andreas, Gradius V and Devil May Cry ( to name a few ) due to it.

Attempted to buy a PStwo last friday and in the weekend : failed !
Damn things were sold out, out of stock. Demand seems to be too high for Sony Europe to keep up. Had to pre-order a unit. Fortunately they expect new batches before December.

Got my PS2 Christmas 2000. I love it. Still runs strong despite some minor problems which I fixed :cool:

The President of Iceland bought your PS2 that was meant for you? Dude, I\'d start a rebellion or at least throw a snowball at your Ice King. :p

The story of my PS2:
I wanted the PS2 when it came out but didn\'t have the money. Even by Christmas it was hard to get. My mom paid 350 I think she said for it. I saw this kind of box shaped package and joked to my mom that it was the PS2 but said it wasn\'t because it would have been impossible to get it, especially because of the parts shortage. I opened it and low and behold, it was the PS2. I actually hugged the box. I was happy as hell. I got Smuggler\'s Run and SSX with it and spent the next couple weeks playing it. My mom said she grabbed the last one in the store but the guy charged 50 bucks more for it.

I exchanged the first PS2 I got after a few months. The first model had problems loading a DVD movie (U571) so I freaked out and thought I had got a defect model..
Anyway, later I found out the movie is incompatible with the PS2.. So I replaced a perfectly normal PS2. :D
So my older PS2 is over 4 years old now.. It still reads games perfectly (no DRE *knocks on wood*), white, gold, blue, black all run fine.
But today I got the newer PSTwo, damn what a nice little thing. It loads/boots the games in a few seconds compared to my old PS2, which could take up to 20 seconds sometime.
I\'ll keep the old one though as I have a hard drive connected to it.
