I was checking my account just a moment ago, to see how much money I was spending on DVD\'s (shocking reading :p) and I suddenly realised that somebody had deposited $642 to my account. And trust me, I wasn\'t expecting it and it\'s not from anyone I know. The "note-thingy" has his name and address, so I guess I have to return the money... too bad, I sure could use that money on a new gfxcard. :)
But what would you do?
PS. I swear God is testing me (at least that\'s what I would figure if I was a religious man...) - I keep finding mobiles, money, mp3-players and the like, and now someone has accidently given me money. :D
-
My Credit Card company, which I owed about $2,500, credited me with $2,019. I didn\'t complain. I paid the remaining amount. :D

In regards to banks - if they make an error in your favor - once they find out about the error they will remove it from your account regardless of if you spent it or not. Even if it puts your account in the negative... they will get their money back.
Usually, when things like this happen a teller keyed in the wrong account number.
-
I think what happened was the guy was transfering money from his own account to someone he bought something from. He then typed the wrong account number in his online banking solution-thingy.
-
Giga\'s right.... they will take it back. And here in the land of green ginger, they\'ll arrest you for stealing if you closed your account after spending the money.
-
Correct me if I\'m wrong (perhaps it works differently in the States), but if I make a mistake and transfer money to a different account than the one I intended, I\'d curse at myself and think the money would be lost (unless the recipient was kind enough to return it)... I\'m not entirely convinced that the bank can just take money out of my account (even if someone else put them there by mistake).
-
Here in the US the bank will take the money back whether it is a day or a week later they will take it back period. Deposit mistakes are quite common and it really doesn\'t matter if the person depositing the money made the mistake or the teller made the mistake. My mother is a branch manager of a bank and that is the source of my information.
-
Well I\'m certainly not questioning your information, I\'m just not sure it works that way over here.
But of course I have no right to keep money that\'s not mine and even if the bank can\'t/won\'t give it back to him, he could always sue me...
-
Call your bank and ask Sammy - just don\'t give your name. ;)
-
you dumb bastards, he\'s saying that someone used the wrong routing number and sent the cashola to him and not the intended person. This would be like me sending a money order to the wrong address.
-
Except they have you down as the recipient electronically. They also have your account # as the one who received $642 on 11/18/2004 the same day someone accidentally deposited $642 to a wrong account.
Just give it back, you live in Europe not America. :)

make him pay for his stupidity!

That sucks that you have to return it.
My grandmother just put 10 grand in my account...but it\'s for my parents for their new house...and this way, the money doesn\'t get taxed  (long story)
In a few months...I\'m getting a few grand anyway from her, so it\'s fine. But the 10 grand is like "temporary storage"...meh...
Oh yeah...I found a 50 dollar bill two months ago in the mall parking lot :p That was awesome...
-
Here in Aus, they can\'t just take the money back. They ask if you would return it. You technically have to, but only 1$ per day if u want.
-
What is the point of returning a dollar per day???
-
ummm, so u can spend all the cash, and pay them back 7 bucks a week.
-
ok, i get it now...sorry, i\'m a little slow sometimes...:shy:
-
it\'s like an interest free loan with a low minimum payment amount.

That happen to my aunt she owns her own mortage company. She checked her account and the bank had put 1million into her account. She called and told us all. We all were telling her to keep it but there is noway you can keep it. The bank will automatically take the money out of your account.
And if you close your account your a theif and could prosecuted.

Coincidentally, my friend just told me she accidentally deposited money into the wrong account and got real down over it...
I just told her what Giga basically said and it cheered her right up...
-
I have my mom do all my banking :) Actually, I just have a savings account and I watch it when I take money out from the ATM.

ummm....it\'s a joke or are you serious?

What, about my post, would make you think I was joking?
-
Anyway, the situation has been resolved quite nicely...
Turns out, she accidentally deposited the money into her twin sister\'s account...

you said coincidentally, i was like "for real,?", and you said it cheered her up when you told her about giga story. I was thinking, how would that cheer her up when Giga got 642. I thought it was a joke of some sort. Guess not.
Now I think I understand why it cheer her up, because she wasn\'t happy about whom she deposited her money into and you telling her aboug giga receiving someone\'s else money gave her a chuckle for the coincidental but she send the money but giga receive it from someone else.
Ugh, my english is bad. *something tells me soully will jumps in and do his translation move*

It was me, SAMWISE, who got the money, not Giga.
