Title: Sonic Mega Collection Plus
Post by: Paul2 on November 21, 2004, 08:03:50 PM
What\'s your thought on Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PS2 and XBOX?

Just got my copied today for $15 tax tax not included.  Its had a MSRP of $20, but Toys R Us are selling games $20 and under  with $5 off.

its basically all the Sonic games from the Genesis ported to DVD disc for ps2 and xbox.  Maybe that\'s why is only cost $20.  They didn\'t bother to remake the graphic with higher resolution.  But that is okay with me if only they don\'t have black borders.

graphic and music is identical to Genesis versions except they added 4 big black borders on all four corners.  Must be because they use 640 x 480 while these games run at 320 x 240?

Anybody own this game?  What do you think?  What version did you have?  XBOX or PS2?

I own it but haven\'t tried it yet.

I\'ll report back later. It should be fun since I never had a Genesis.

Never had a Genesis? Odd, man.

I can only hope that the emulation is done better than Sega\'s previous efforts where the sound was not on par and the games actually suffered slowdown.

My favorite Sonic was the 2nd one.  I found the levels in that one to be extremely fun, expecially the one with all the oil.

The 1st and 2nd ones are my favs. Sonic 3 was okay...and then everything kind of went downhill after a while. The one on Dreamcast was kind of cool...

I might just get this collection :)

I believe the first Sonic game I played was Sonic 2 or maybe Sonic 1 back when i was a kid where I believe it was my uncle who bought us a TV and later Sega Genesis that come with Sonic game cartridge.

I think it was Sonic 2.   I love the game, and probably the only Sonic where i passes all the game.  I play Sonic 1 before, but didn\'t go through all the levels, so that mean i didn\'t past the game.  On Sonic 3,  I play like some part of level 1 and just give up.  Probably i just got tired of it and didn\'t bother trying to get familiar with it.

But I have take back my words about the graphic on Sonic Mega Collection Plus being equal to the genesis.  Because I find out the graphic actually looks better on the ps2 and perhaps XBOX too.  the color seem much richer and more color palette than Genesis.  Even the resolution seems sharper too.  The game was output in 640 x 480 resolution with big black borders, but around 500 x 350 lines of resolution are the game, and the remaining resolutions are black borders.  And this 500 x 350 is higher than Genesis resolution which is about 320 x 240, or it\'s 240 x 224?  Not sure, but either way, The PS2 and XBOX version have better resolution and color definition than the genesis.

Its seem like whoever did the emulation of all the 20 Sonic games on Genesis and Game Gear gave it a little face lift on graphic.

It would be nice if they redo the graphic in 640 x 480 to fill the screen, but probably they don\'t want to spend too much money or time on it.

The improvement on the graphic shows, and I read that the two players split screen on Sonic 2 have improve and the frame drops which slowdown the game on the Genesis have been fix for the emulation which is a good thing.  If only they can fill the screen without black borders, I will give this game a must buy for all the Sonic fan.  Its will be a great collection to have and for only $20, that\'s a great deal there.

I am playing Sonic 2 and I had collected all the emeralds and turning into Super Sonic and right now at the Hill Top Zone level.  I just passed the Casino level.  Quite enjoying it.  Beside, the same game I used to play months ago on Genesis kept crashing on me.

Translation

I think it was sonic 2. I loved that game and it was the only sonic i fully completed. I have played sonic 1 before, but i didn\'t go through all the levels. I played the first level of sonic 3, but i gave up probably because i couldn\'t be f@#ked learning the game.

Update:  I just found out on the internet that I can increase the viewable image to fill the tv screen by just pressing R3 joystick.  Although still doesn\'t completely fill the screen 100% like many other game consoles, but its a big improvement and the black borders are very similiar to FFX.

Before, the black borders are very thick.  Now, its just like some games with slight black borders, like FFX for example.  I go back and read a little on the Manual instructions and it say this game support progressive scan 480.  Whoa, I have hdtv outside my living room.  But I don\'t know if I should spend $20 for component video cable for this...

After the increased viewable area, the resolution seems more sharper, and obviously much better than Sonic on Sega genesis.  The detail looks more finer.

Obviously much better than the GameCube Sonic Mega Collection version that came out two years earlier but the graphic wasn\'t improve much upon.
