Title: iPod in the car
Post by: THX on December 02, 2004, 12:50:49 AM
I recently got a 40gb iPod and the unit is pretty neat, I can see why they cost so much now.  Main intention was to put it in the car with my alpine head unit with the setup described here:

http://www.alpine-usa.com/products/leading_technology/leading_tech_kca-420i.htm

Basically you can control the iPod using the head unit as well as using the Alpine\'s DACs rather than the iPod\'s.  I did some research and it seems this setup is S-L-O-W.  Basically tricks the HU into thinking the iPod is a CD changer so searching for songs is painfully slow, especially for the bigger ipods.  Oh and there\'s a limit on the amount of artists you can have (255), and the ipod\'s button controls are shut off.

Supposedly the 2005 models will fix these issues but right now they are deal breakers for me.  So now I got a cute lil ipod waiting to be used in the car, anyone here have one that can chime in?  I know there\'s a ton of aftermarket accessories for these things.  Who know, I just may break down and get that device after all.

They have a new 60 Gig iPod. That would have been perfect for my old neighbor. He must have owned like...1000 CDs. And nothing but good music, too :p

It\'s not a stupid question, but they work on both Windows and Apple PCs. It works with iTunes, which can be used on both OS\'s as well ;) I\'m going to get an iPod mini. It\'s 3 inches long and weighs the same as 1 CD (the disc, not the case).

That\'ll be f^cking awesome to use in the gym :D

Amazon was having a sale on all iPods last week, picked it up for $367.  Free s/h was available too!

omen I\'m still encoding and tranferring over my colletion.  I\'ll probably settle on 320 AAC for my favorite artists and 192 for everything else.  What did you settle on?

soundifound- that looks like a cool case.  Did you buy it online?  I know Best Buy carries ipod stuff bt I have a feeling they charge an arm and a leg.

its an iskin from http://www.iskin.com.  its a really odd stretchy rubber, totally worth it if you don\'t want to scratch it up.
