Microsoft has released a swathe of new figures related to Bungie\'s Xbox opus, Halo 2, revealing that the title has now sold over five million units worldwide and become the most popular game in the history of Xbox Live.
The five million unit mark has been surpassed in around three weeks, beating the global sales figure of the original Halo which took over two years to reach and bringing total sales of the franchise (including the PC version) to over 11 million units.
News of Halo 2\'s success comes as Microsoft revealed its sales projections for the Xbox console through to next June, with Bloomberg this week reporting that the company is hoping to ship 20 million units of the console by that point.
As well as the retail sales data, a plethora of Xbox Live statistics reveals that gamers have clocked up some 28 million hours playing Halo 2 online since its launch, making it more popular than any other game on the service, with over 900,000 players trying the game out online.
According to today\'s figures, gamers play the game online in sessions averaging around 91 minutes - which, Microsoft helpfully points out, is about the same length as most major film releases.

it\'s kinda scary that 5 millions copy shiped and 20 millions people own a xbox. that 1/4 of the xboxer bought the game.
Halo3 sure will be "teh" MS hypemachine for the xbox2.. new screen on display shortly, stay tuned.

Actually, the last official figures of the Xbox installed userbase was 15.5 million back in June. MS is aiming for 20 million by this coming June.
Rumor has it Bungie wants to hold off Halo 3 until the PS3 launch...

It had record breaking pre-sales plus it broke the 3 million sold mark within its\' first three days. It\'s not that hard to grasp considering the original managed to sell 5.5 million. Looks like everyone came back for the sequel.

I, personally, think the PS2\'s sale numbers are inflated due to poor hardware.

I didn\'t go back for the sequel. I just find the fact that one-third of Xbox owners have purchased the game to be unbelievable.
Unless it\'s a big game from Santa Claus, I just don\'t see that many users picking up the one game.
I could be wrong, I just think it\'d be too easy to inflate the figure.

You do know that there were lines outside of stores for midnight releases don\'t you? Biggest pre-seller in history, sold 2.38 million copies in its first day making 125 million in sales...FIRST DAY! That figure is for North America only, the game was released world wide in the same week.
Also, if a third of Xbox owners bought Halo, which they did, then it isn\'t hard to believe that a majority of them came back for the second game. Halo 2 is also a system seller type game so it probably brought in some new Xbox owners as well.
I just don\'t see how that\'s hard to grasp considering the original was such a popular game...

We\'ve already been down that road, mm. I believe Nu gave you an extensive list of FPS available on Xbox to which you didn\'t bother replying. I also believe Ryu made a comment about that very subject as well to which you also didn\'t bother replying.
If you\'re interested in other genre\'s besides FPS then I suggest you take a trip down to your local video game store.

that number sounds suspect to me as well...i mean if that many people bought it, then x-box should have surpassed sony by now in terms of console sales as well by now...i mean i\'m not into fps, but is halo2 that great?

If you\'re interested in other games on Xbox simply go to ebgames (http://www.ebgames.com) and take a look at what\'s available. Each one of those games is competition. Judging by the sales Halo 2 is in demand.
Just to try and bring your argument into perspective, how do you explain that Grand Theft Auto outsells anything on PS2 2:1? It certainly can\'t be for lack of competition, what do you suppose it is?

If you mean monthly sales the Xbox has been very close in sales, even outselling the PS2 a few times this year. November NPD numbers haven\'t come out yet but there have been reports of Xbox shortages as of late. This can be contributed to two things though, one is Halo 2 but the other seems to be because there is a shortage of PSTwo\'s and people are going for Xbox to put under the tree instead.

I like how you pick one game off that list, there are 12 fps games total on that list and I forgot two. Starwars Battle Front and Red Faction(original). The majority of them received high scores.
Any game released on Xbox, or otherwise, is competition.
Also, speaking of dodges, wanna at least try and address what I said about GTA? It shatters your logic about lack of competition...

Any game released has intentions of selling so yes. Like I said, Halo is just more popular.
Also, you can go look those scores up yourself but many of them scored 7\'s, 8\'s, and 9\'s. That\'s above average, below Halo\'s average, however they are still competition.

No, it\'s always up to the consumer yet the average score for that particular game is above average meaning the game isn\'t garbage.

still shatters your logic. Despite all the competition on the PS2 console Vice City managed to rack up 13 million units sold. Shows that games sell based on popularity. Vice City was in demand, now San Andreas is as well. The projections for GTA SA are 15 million. Mind you PS2 had several big releases within the same month yet GTA SA has gone above and beyond their sales.

But that game came out during the original Halo\'s release. Both games managed to rack up significant sales. They sold based on their popularity, not your silly logic that there was no competition because there clearly was, on both consoles mind you. No, there hasn\'t been anything to the calibur of either game but that\'s not Bungie\'s or Rockstars problem, it\'s everyone else\'s.

All high scoring games of recent, except Rogue Agent, all available on the Xbox. If you\'re suggesting that Halo 2 only sold well because Xbox gamers are starved then you\'re couldn\'t be more wrong. That wouldn\'t explain why the original managed to keep selling at a consistent rate over three years time and it also wouldn\'t explain the other 10 million Xbox owners who didn\'t buy into the Halo franchise.
One also should consider that there were several huge releases on rival consoles. October and November were full of AAA games on PS2 and GC, yet Halo 2 still managed to trump them all. It\'s popular, for whatever reasons, but there\'s nothing else to attribute to its\' success.

Yeah, I don\'t get what\'s so great about the Halo games. Seriously, I play 4-5 FPS games on PC a year that are equally good or better than these hyped up Halo games...
They are really starved for games on Xbox or something. I don\'t play mine much anymore that\'s for sure.

Probably because it\'s on a console. Not everybody likes PC gaming or having to deal with upgrading their PC.

I LOVE pc gaming but I\'m a Halo fan as well. No one said you have to like it but I don\'t see the point of all the hostility towards the people that do. Will it make the PS2 better? Probably just in your mind but you\'re talking to a person who doesn\'t care.
