Last year, I bought an HDD with 180 Gbytes. In the bios, its correctly read as 180 Gbytes. In the Window, it reads 127 Gbytes. I am using Window XP Home Edition.
Do you guys know anyway I can fix this to make it read 180 Gbytes of total storage instead of 127?
I just did a quick search engine and it shows microsoft site. But it didn\'t give me the option to download the service pack. BTW, if I download service pack 2, do I need to download the service pack 1 too? Which service pack will fix the storage of HDD?
-
SP1 fixes the storage problem.
I was using the first version of Win XP Pro, and when I got my 160GB HDD I had to get SP1 or else the HDD would be limited to 130GB.
-
is the whole disk partitioned?
open up disk manager under admin tolls in control panel to check
-
thanks fastson.
Do you know where i can download this SP1?
MM, I only partition 1 instead of two or more seperate partition.

GOOGLE (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=windows+xp+sp1+download)
-
Filemirrors (http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?type=begins&file=sp1a)
or even better
M$ $P1A (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx)
Get the Network installation.

thanks guys.
I just did a google and found it too. Thanks for the help btw.
First impression was the file is 128 MBytes in size. And it took about 7 hours to finish downloading it since i uses 56k modem.
added: still in the process of downloading it. 25% complete...
-
ah crap, it stop downloading at 66 Mbytes and I guess I have to redo it. Man, all the hours letting it download, and now redownloading it....
-
eh.. try using a program that has a resume fuction.
Getright being imo the best.
-
Or Flashget.

Yeah. That\'s what I did after direct download stop at 66 Mbytes. Funny thing is, I use Getright that you mention too. At first when I use Firefox to view the link to download SP1, Getridght didn\'t detect it, then i copy the link to Iinternet Explorer and click on the link, it works. Getright detect its a downloading link and it resumes like you said.
Now at 25% complete and about 8 more hours to go. :bounce:
My cousin uses DSL, last time i came over his house, i ask him if he can burned me the SP1 to a CD, he said okay. When I got home, it was just an icon picture of SP1 or something like that which doesn\'t have the SP1 information. Not sure if I makes sense here, so I was like what the heck. It seems like he forgot or not wanting to help me to download SP1. Seriously, his DSL is like 10x faster than mine 56k...
oh well, if things didn\'t work well again I guess i will pay him another visit.
-
sounds like he made a shortcut link rather then copied the service pack itself.
-
^^^
you mean my cousin? I don\'t know what happen. I saw him copied it using Nero6. I should have done this sooner. I should have get the Window Service Pack sooner. I made several attempts already. A few times I have called him from beginning of this year to the last time i saw him which is about 3 months ago about burning the SErvice pack 1 for me. But he didn\'t do it until my bro took me over and he said he had the service pack 2. he will burn it for me. But justas it turns out. He burnt an empty Service pack for me.
-
anyway, just finish downloading Service Pack 2 an hour ago, and installed it. As I installed it, it said product key is invalid?
What the? SP1 require product key?
-
you running a bogus version of XP? That\'s what it sounds like anyway.
-
I called and ask my cousin, he said SP1 required a product key. Why it\'s invalid, I think you are right. I am running a copy version of Window XP.
Anyway, I am going to bring ithe computer over on the weekend and let him install the SP1 for me.
-
Partition Magic works well with this problem also. Had the same problem even after I uprgraded to SP1, but Partition Magic took care of it.
-
Two nights ago (Sunday night),
took the computer to my cousin\'s house and had him boot up the Service Pack 1 for my computer. After the installation of SP1, the computer still say 127 Gbytes instead of 180 Gbytes.
So, I guess my next move is partition magic....any help here?
-
Okay,
just like to add that my Hard disk drive finally read as 180 Gbytes (is actually 172 Gbytes) instead of 127 Gbytes, thanks to Service Pack 2 after I reformatted my HDD and reinstalled a fresh copy of Window XP SP2.
Also, my computer has never been any faster.
:D
-
Anyway, would like to say i am back to just window XP Pro with no service packs.
But I just repair my window xp pro, but instead of repair it with sp2, i just uses the regular xp pro and i got the best of both world.
I guess like the some posters here said, although sp2 does have some improvements, it also have some glitches and incompatibilities. And from what I experienced, I go with SP1 which from what you guys said, fixes the "storage problems" but also doesn\'t have the glitches that SP2 have for dvd burning compatibilities with dvd players. Because of this, i be prompt to ask my cousin to make me a copy of Service Pack 1 this time instead of SP2 and make sure he really make me a copy of sp1 because last time he probably secretly burnt me a copy of sp2 instead of sp1 that i told him too...
ADD: called me worry too much, but after I clean the lasers of my brother\'s dvd player and on my ps2 using disc cleaner. Every dvd disc that I burnt previously are now readable. So, in parts, its not totally sp2\'s fault.:nut:
-
sp2 works fine for me and any dvds i burn.. Even on crappy medium.
user error.
-
I don\'t know. I finds SP1 more reliable. I am very careful when it comes to burning DVD and picking media that gives out great result from my burner.
SP2, I burnt disc without problems either, and even the Disc test shows great result with sp2 or without it. Its just that, for some strange reasons my ps2 can\'t read it at times. I have to eject and insert the disc several times before it recognize a disc there. Now, its seem more compatible after i clean the lens.
As if part of the problems are cause by sp2. Either way, someone or something put a password on the bootup screen that i can\'t log in without an account. So I go ahead and make a fresh copy of window xp without sp2.
I guess to reduce the ps2 disc read error, I have to open up the ps2 and adjust that spinning thingy like the sticky thread in this forum.
After I clean my 4 1/2 years old dvd player in my brother\'s room. All the disc I burnt using window xp sp2 seem to work fine now. So part of it has to do with dirty len...
But again, sp2 is not for everyone. I, myself prefer sp1...
-
ps2 reads my crappy princo media fine, so does my dvd player. Only reason why i\'ve moved over to ritek -r 8x is because i can get them cheaper and my title printer can print onto them better.
-
how can you tell if your princo discs are crappy? Even if your dvd player maybe crappy, its maybe more tolerable of reading errors and failures.
quality of disc varies from burner to burner. You have a lite-on burner, so I guess they burn good results for some media, and newer firmware updates usually improved on burned quality on crappier quality media discs and even makes it possible to burn at a faster speed than the burner listed...i didn\'t realized by just "flashing" to latest firmwares can make such a difference on some discs that have some bad PIE and PIF but with the newest firmware, it fixes those problems.
Also, what version is your ps2? newer ps2 are less picky than older ps2 with the imfamous "disc read errors" problems. I bought my ps2 back in July 2001, so mine is pretty old.
-
i have a V7 ps2, Princo are KNOWN to be a crap DVD media brand. If you\'re getting disc read errors, try burning your dvds at a lower speed.

First, even if Princo is a crappy brand, i shouldn\'t worry too much about "brand" as most of them are "rebadged" of another "manufacturer".
I assumed the Princo disc you bought were manufacture by say some company that your dvd burner burn with great quality.
That means, Princo didn\'t make the discs. They paid and bought off some manufacturer and the manufacturer stamped the "Brand" name that they sell to on the disc. And your dvd burner burn great quality out of this specific model and manufacture disc.
Even if this "Princo" did make their own disc or bought off some lesser known and possibly crappier quality, chances are newer firmware update to your burner may support this type of disc and improve on burning quality on this specific model. Even I was surprise how just a simple firmware update can make this much improvements.
The problem is whether your dvd burner\'s manufacturer bothers to update their firmware and whether if the newer firmware improve on burning quality on lesser known and possibly crappier quality media.
My brother bought Teon 8x +R media, they are cheap. When I put it on my dvd burner and by using program software such as KProbe or Nero CD/DVD Speed, its give out disc information such as disc type, manufacturer, code/model...
and Teon bought it of one of the popular media manufacturer which is CMC Magnetic with an added branding faceplate on the front of the disc. There are other known manufacturers such as Ricoh, Ritec, TDK, Verbatim, Misubishi....and most "3rd party" brand just bought it off those manufacturers with the added brand name on top.
-
Here is a pic of the burned quality of CMC 8x +R with the older firmware VSOE released back in late 2004.
As you can see, the burn quality is really good with the firmware version VSOE. Except near the end of the disc, it starts have a few spikes of PIE that reach as high as 400 near the end of the disc and PIF reaching over 4 at the end.
-
Hope your not using +R media for dvd/ps2 dvds.
Also, not everyone updates their firmware. I didn\'t update mine till a few weeks ago when i found out i could change the firmware to a different model to get DL support. My burner was running on the release firmware.
Princo dvds are crap, whether they\'re made by another manufacture or not still doesn\'t change the fact that they\'re crap. I got good burns simply because i did them at low speeds, otherwise the outta tracks would be completely screwed.
-
And here is the same disc burned from the lastest firmware VSOG released back in early Feb. 2005.
Scanning across the disc, The PI errors are no higher than 12 with an average of .69.
The PI Failures are no higher than 2 across the disc with an average of .11. This is comparable commerical pressed dvd quality there.
Again, for quality of a dvd disc to be consider "good", PIE should not reach over 280, and the PIF should not reach over 4. And mine is consider great quality there.

Why not? All my dvd players even the playstation 2 supports both the + and the - media. Also, I can change the booktype setting of my DVD+R/RW/DL to DVD-ROM so any dvd player that doesn\'t like the + media will be able to read it as the booktype now is ROM instead of +R.
Also, not everyone updates their firmware. I didn\'t update mine till a few weeks ago when i found out i could change the firmware to a different model to get DL support. My burner was running on the release firmware.
That is true because most consumers didn\'t know about it. Like me, I heard of firmware updates of dvd burners improves quality and stuff, but I didn\'t realized how much of an impact it can actually get. Until a member from a different forum told me to update my firmware for my burner, that was back in last December where I updated it to VSOE. I didn\'t notice much of a different after the firmware update. But their latest VSOG firmware really took me by surprise and around this February and March, I learned a good amount of information about disc test quality.
Also, usually "Brand" name dvd burners frequently updated firmwares on their burners. So, that\'s a very good reason to buy "Brand" name burners. Most cheaper and lesser known Brand burners don\'t bother mostly because they sell their burners cheap. why bother spending time and money releases new firmware every few months when they are not making much money out of the burners they sell. Not to mention crappy dvd burner with no firmware update = the horror.

burn at low speed is another good method to ensure better quality and reduce the chances of errors. Like my burner, when I have the VSOE firmware, i usually burn my discs at 4x. After updating to VSOG, I can burn at 6x and even at 8x with less to worry about errors since this latest firmware actually make quite some big mprovements on burn quality and supporting more media.
But yet again, like you said, i still recommend burning at slower speed is still better. Burning dvd at half of the burner\'s maximum speed is the ideal way.
-
PS2 seems to work alot better with -R format DVDs. I\'ve yet to have my ps2 not read any movies i have on -r dvds.
-
-r > +r

Look, DVD+R DL has been out for about year now, and DVD-R DL hasn\'t been out yet. And most new dvd burners released in the last month have a burn speed of 4x for DVD+R DL while the -R DL isn\'t out yet even though the spec for -R has been finalized for a few months...
not to mention late last year when i see the majority of burners that support 16x single layer for DVD+Rs but only support DVD-R burnt at 8x max, then later models the -R finally catch up and goes to 12x, and finally 16x.
The "+" media is ahead of the competition in term of speed and format suport. Although most consumer buy "-" media more because that\'s is the standard made by DVDForum and have the most compatibility with DVD players.
Me, personally prefer the + over the -.
-
and yet you\'re complaining about having problems with it

sigh, I have problem with both actually. some media i burned before with the older firmware does have problem with compatibility. Doesn\'t matter pluses or minuses. the older firmware only like a few media that its burn really good at. while most of the other media, it burn a very good quality but have some spikes, either from the beginning of the disc or near the end.
-
whether u believe it or not, DVD-R is more compatible with the ps2/dvd player then +R even with the booktype changed. I\'d personally only use +R when i need to backup information.
-
hmm,
my experience is different. Back in september when i first have my dvd burner, i tried Sony 4x +Rs and TDK 4x +Rs. That time, I didn\'t know anything about "remanufacture", neither does I know about changing booktype.
And pretty much all of those discs i burned are all playable on my playStation 2 and on my 4 1/2 years old sony dvd player.
But the minuses media is a different story. I tried TDK 4x -Rs, it was not readable on my picky ps2. Later, I tried Sony 4x -Rs, as you can see. Same thing, unreadable on my ps2.
That time, I thought maybe my playstation 2 likes the + media more, since I know nothing about how to test the quality of the disc. Its not until this late February I realized the true reasons why.
I found out that my Sony 4x +R is actually were manufacture from Ricoh and my TDK 4x +Rs were manufacture from CMC Magnetic as it was revealed by the test software program KProbe, and later Nero CD/DVD. And the Sony and TDK 4x -Rs and even their 8x -Rs are actually manufacture by them. They only manufacture the "-" media while they bought off the + media from other manufacturer.
But how come only the + work on my ps2, but not the minus. Recently, after I updated my firmware late last month, I found out that my specific model dvd burner burns better at the "+" media than the "-". As if Lite On concentrate on improving burned quality more on the + than on the - for my burner...
Some disc that i tested back from TDK 4x +Rs and Sony 4x +Rs, or shall i say Ricoh and CMC Magnetic 4x+Rs show great results, as good as Hollywood Pressed DVD. No wonder my ps2 doesn\'t have problems playing them. The minuses on the other hands, burn quality is good but not consistent across the disc, but some are okay, because there are quite some errors and failures to high for my ps2 to tolerate.
So, its not true that the DVD-R is more compatible with the ps2, its really depends on the burned quality.
From what I read on the internet, so far, most dvd players play fine with either format. And all DVD players play fine when the DVD+R is changed to DVD-ROM. Its read the disc as a DVD-ROM format like commerical dvds. If a dvd player doesn\'t read DVD-ROM booktype, then it won\'t read any commercial dvds at all from the studios.
I guess why you have better lucks with the - media is because the model of your burner burns better with the "-" media than the "+".
When DVD+R DL become more mainstreams and when it dropped it prices down to much more reasonable price, I be sure to buy them and I believe my burner will works great on them and not to mention i will changed it booktype.
Right now, I am waiting patiently till Verbatim dropped it prices of 3 discs of DVD+R DL down like $5 or less. Now, they are sold at $25 for only 3 discs at most retail stores and I found one from CompUSA selling it for $20....expensive...
-
odd, because i have a Sohw-812S flashed to a 832S and it\'s alwasy been able to burn -R dvds without any problems in both DVD players and ps2s. I\'ve tested these discs in over 5 different DVD players and god only knows how many ps2s they\'ve gone through. Only ever had 1 dvd player have problems and that was simply because the lens was coated in dust.
-
the firmware you have is different than mine I suppose. Your firmware is hard to get as I don\'t find them in a couple of internet sites i check, because the firmware you flash actually change your burner from 812S to 832S which the biggest different is that it support burning DVD+R DL 2.4x speed...
If you want, update the firmware from VSO_ to VSOG. But i am not sure if that will works since your burner is different, but since its now a 832S. I guess, it shouldn\'t be a problem....*shrugs*...
if you have any question to where you can get the firmware, got to liteoamerica.com or something, or i could link you a couple of internet sites have link or download to the latest firmware updates from a majority of burners, especially "Brand" Names such as Lite-On, Plextor, Philips, Pioneer, NEC, LG, Sony, etc....these brand names updated their firmwares frequently for their burners.
-
errrrr dood, i know where to get firmware updates. But they have built in eeprom scanners that detect what your burner model is and that stops u from updating to other models. I wanted DL, the only difference between the 832S and 812S is the firmware, the hardware itself is pretty much identical. The firmware i\'m running you can\'t get at the normal liteon firmware update site/s.
CG5G is a hacked firmware, which i\'m running and is improved over the VSOG update..
You can get it here (http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html)
-
whoa,
guess like i learn something new everyday. Well, the CG5G changes your burner from 812 to 832. how about the version of it. You know the letters after 832S. Does it read as VSOG?
-
It reads Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-832S CG5G
