Title: I got a Creative ZEN Micro....
Post by: Samwise on December 09, 2004, 02:43:34 AM
...and it\'s AWESOME! :D

I only have about an hour to play with it (the ZEN that is) before heading to work, so I can\'t give any in-depth reviews at this time. But it\'s sweet and cool looking. I want to have babies with it.

I got it in white (see attached picture - it looks even better in real life).

Hah looks sweet.  Can you take some pics of it in your hand?

Deciding either this or the ipod mini for my sis.

umm....up to 98 dB in S/N ratio, wow.  That slightly beat the CD-Audio limits of 96 dB and some CD songs have less than that.

Pretty amazing if the spec is correct.  What is creative zen micro btw?

It\'s awesome I tell ya... 5 gb, radio (you can even record from radio), mp3 (duh), two (!) rechargable (sp) batteries (so you can obviously replace batteries, something you can\'t do on, say, iPods), you can use some (or all) of the space as a USB harddrive/storage, it plays MP3, WAV, something else, and it has support for DMR, it sports a cool blue light etc.

(Just wanted to end with some ((()))). :p

I think I\'m going to look into this as a gift for Rya for Christmas.  I\'ve been looking for alternatives to the iPod with better service plans, better AM\\FM support, and perhaps even cheaper while still maintaining a cool look and this just might do the trick.  *Goes price hunting*

wtf?  The prices are roughly the same as the zen xtra.  Why would anyone want a micro?  It\'s like people buying the iPod mini when for 40 bucks more they can have 4 times the space for music...

As far as I see it:

iPod mini
- Pros: Apple quality, looks, clickwheel >*, works seemlessly with iTunes for those who don\'t actually steal music, extras including games calendar etc, smaller, much more aftermarket support.

- Cons: Costs $10 more, 1gb less than the micro, no WMA

Zen Micro
- Pros: $10 cheaper, 5gb instead of 4, easier to change battery if fails, plays WMA

- Cons: A tad bigger than the iPod mini, more buttons on the face, no AAC

Notice this is the way I see it.  Some may like the look of the Zen more which could easily go either way.  Right now I\'m more in favor of the iPod simply because of all the comapnies that make adapters for it to work in your car.

The way I see it, and this is the biggest con of all that is not easily remedied, Apple has screwed this market as far as cheap mp3 players go.  That iPod mini should have been 199 at the most and other products should be matchign that price or beating it out severely.  This is disgusting having to pay more then 200 dollars for a mere five gigs of space.  Damn you Apple.  *listens to iPod*

Are you sure it\'s bigger? I believe it\'s actually smaller... but dunno.
Mine came with two batteries which is a nice touch IMO.

The front is a touchpad.

And to me 5 gb is more than enough. I mean, I don\'t even have enough good music to fill that up, let alone 20 or 40 gb. More is nice, but kinda pointless IMO.

And EviX, you\'re the fcking fag.

Hehe thanks. Don\'t get me wrong though, Apple makes some damn fine stuff too. :)

Well, that Zen Micro surely beats the crap out of the iPod mini.  Longer battery life, microphone for recording, FM radio, even looks smaller in some of the pictures I\'ve seen, and has an easily replaceable li-on battery and has a much better selection of solid colors as opposed to Apple\'s adoption of pastels which I always thought was weird especially since they do not include black as an option.  After some careful deliberation, I picked up one for Rya for Christmas.  Hopefully it\'ll arrive soon.  She doesn\'t read this section of the boards so she won\'t see this.  The only drawback is the musicmatch software which she can chuck so long as it works with WMP 10, which will at the very least load faster then iTunes.  No one tell her.  :)

There you go...have fun ;) There\'s some cool-looking skins for iPod on that site

EDIT: Hmmmm...holy crap. It\'s like 50 bucks for a custom color...that just lost the coolness factor. I don\'t think this is the site I was referring to. THe one I saw was 15...:/

Just google some iPod skins. There\'s a lot of sites...but they all seem high in price...

Heh. What more can I say? I can\'t compare it to the iPod, because I never owned one. But I love the ZEN.

Dammit samwise I\'m set on the ipod mini, post some pics of yours to sway me so I can save a few bux and my sis can gain another gig.

How\'s the software that works with it?

ooseven, the usb 1,1 would be a deal killer for me, way to slow to be acceptable.

But the amount of data he can transfer is hardly a problem for him either.

I\'ll post pics of Rya\'s Zen when it arrives either Friday or Monday.

I have a 20gig Zen Touch.

Its nice, the zen Micro is too high priced, for what little space you get. But it does have some nice features.

For the same price, you can get a 20gig Zen Touch also.

The Zen Touch only provides few features.  It\'s simply nothing more then a harddrive mp3 player.  That\'s great if you horde music, but some people just don\'t collect music like that.  The extra features of the Zen Micro makes it the perfect device for those who want a nice selection on the go without having to limit themselves to just that.  I picked Rya up the silver model.

Me likey long time.

I\'m still lovin\' it (*get\'s $100 from McD\'s PR department*)

The only thing I might be slightly disappointed with is the touch thingy. It can sometimes be tricky to scroll just one nudge, especially if you\'re on the move. But I haven\'t really played with the sensitivity settings yet, so perhaps that would solve it.
