COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) -- A gunman stormed the stage during a heavy metal concert in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday night, firing at the band and audience and killing four people before a police officer shot and killed him, according to police.
One of the dead was guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. The gunman also wounded two people.
The man was "targeting members in the band," Columbus police Sgt. Brent Mull said.
Before the gunman was shot, police said, he grabbed a hostage and fired into the crowd. It was not clear what happened to the hostage.
The attack came shortly after the band, Damageplan, began its performance at the Alrosa Villa nightclub on Columbus\' north end.
One of the wounded is in critical condition, and the other is hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Two others were injured in the incident and treated at the scene, although the nature of their injuries was not clear.
According to witnesses, the gunman initially shot the band\'s guitarist, Dimebag Darrell.
Darrell, 38, and his brother, Vinnie Paul, 40, formed Damageplan after Pantera -- a group they formed in the 1980s -- broke up last year. Their father is Jerry Abbott, a country and western songwriter and producer.
Police were notified of the shooting around 10:18 p.m., Mull said. A uniformed police officer who was near the scene slipped into the venue from a back entrance, confronted the gunman during the rampage and killed him.
"If not for the officer who showed up, there would have been more dead," Mull said.
Witnesses described the shooter as a heavyset man, wearing a Columbus Blue Jackets hockey jersey.
Police roped off a huge area of the nightclub\'s parking lot, as 60 detectives questioned hundreds of witnesses. Police brought in buses to keep the witnesses warm as they waited to be questioned.
Calvin Bota said he saw the shooting from the mosh pit right in front of the stage, shortly after the band began playing.
"Somebody came -- I don\'t know where they came from, out of the audience or whatnot -- but they come onto (the) stage and ... he shot the guitarist at first, fired a couple of other shots and then he hid behind the stage a little bit," Bota told CNN affiliate WSYX.
"Everybody started scattering, you know, there\'s mayhem everywhere. And then a police officer came into the building, you know, came in professional with his gun raised and then he proceeded to shoot the guy."
Gerald Caudill said the gunman shot the guitarist at least four times.
"I was up close to the stage and I just saw some guy run up on the side of the stage and I heard some shots and I saw (drummer) Vinnie (Paul) fall and somebody jumped on top of Vinnie, and the guy just stayed around the stage and started shooting other people," Caudill said.
"I saw wounded people all over the place, out in the parking lot, inside," he said. "It just didn\'t sound like gunshots or anything, it didn\'t occur to me that something like that was happening."
HOLY CRAP!

holy crap I just saw this earlier, both him and Vinnie Paul. Jebus Cripes this sucks bad.
-
...:(
-
This totally ruined my day.
-
He didnt get Vinnie Paul only DimeBag...
Let take a step back can anyone see the trickle down effects of this.
This was a small venue wich is one of the best places to see a band like this. So now there is going to have to be real security not some buffed out 20 kid are the smaller venue going to be able to avoid this kind of secuirty. SO many more effects will come out of this.
-
never heard of Dimebag until bobs_hardware schooled me about him.
The man was a legend, a very sad day indeed. :(
-
What a prick. What was that shooter\'s malfunction? I didn\'t know who Dimebag was but Im sure if I listened to their music, I might recognize him or his band.

Chizzy sucks at the internet ;)

there I merged them.
Good thing about Vinnie making it, but this still sucks bad.
-
They\'re saying the guy shot him because Pantera broke up.
-
yeah, and to get them back together the best way was to kill the guitarist and founding member
-
Holy hell, I wasn\'t that far from there. I went up to campus like 30 minutes after but not past Alrosa. I didn\'t even hear anything about it till this morning. This is really sad though, how can something like this happen? This isn\'t very Columbus like either.......this just scares me.
"Mull did not identify the remaining fatality. Abbott was the only band member confirmed dead "at this point," he said."
Someone said he shot at multiple band members. When are we going to find out for sure if any others might have been part of the 4 killed or injured.
-
Never heard of him but still a sad way to go.
-
not familiar at all with this band..i thought s**t like this only goes down at rap concerts...;)..
-
Cowboys from hell was their best album IMO.
Wish we could kill all these pus**** that shoot people. and for what? cuz a band broke up or just because he disliked him? hope he burns in hell
Anyway..RIP Dimebag Darrell and Bob Zilla i think also died (actually dont know who he is)
-

It\'s still the black man\'s fault. Stupid white kids, trying to emulate their black heroes...50 cent, 2pac, George Washington Carver....I heard that fat guy who did this had a gangsta rap band and was conducting experiments on thousands of uses for the peanut. Punk-ass bitch.
;) j/k

Far Beyond Driven was Pantera\'s best album.
SLAUGHTERED!!!!!
-
Stupid, white people...
-
It\'s interesting that so many people have never heard of Pantera, and will only find out about them when something like this happens. Their album sales will probably increase dramatically.
I like the album "Far Beyond Driven" and I have always preferred their version of "Planet Caravan" to the Sabbath version.
-
That guy had his own line of guitars, distortion & wah-wah pedals... I can imagine how the companies making that stuff will try to cash in on this. I can\'t believe he got shot 5 times in the head!!!!

The guy was said by his friends that he was cuckoo. He said Pantera stole his lyrics. What a loon.

They also did a superior version of Electric Funeral, IMO, on the Nativity in Black albums.
I had always had hope that the band would get back together, or at least do something together again at some point in the future.. this is so sad. :(
-
That\'s sad. I was hoping Pantera would get back together just like Slayer did. I picked up Slayer\'s Still Raining DVD, it\'s excellent.

Slayer never broke up

Yeah, Lombardo left to form his own band Grip INC. Don\'t you remember. Slayer was never the same without Lombardo-Drummer. Every other drummer was not up to par-shitty!
-
Without David Lombardo, Slayer broke up as far as I\'m concerned. They never sounded the same with just an average drummer. Listen to Rein in Blood and then listen to God Hates us All. There\'s no comparison.
-
Just because one person leaves, doens\'t mean the band broke up. Did Blink 182 break up after Adam killed himself?
-
Paul Bostaph is bad ass, and Lombardo hasn\'t rejoined the band, just finished a tour with them and cd that\'s about it officially.
