Does the disc have scratches? Used games can have some issues. It\'s either a disc read problem of the PS2, or the disc is crap and you should take it back and get a different one.

Take it back and have it replaced.  If you bought it from a store, such as EB and gamestop, they\'ll replace it immediately -- no qualms.

I\'m not afraid to buy pre-played.

So far, the only trouble I had like this came from the brand new Def Jam I bought. I blamed it on the DVD format, a disc scratch, and unreliable hardware.

I wish I had a quick fix, but I ended up replacing the game and buying a new PS2.

The light at the end of the tunnel? Someone\'s buying my unreliable one right now for almost the cost of a new one. God bless Ebay during the holidays. :)
