Other then Ginkos myriad of defects, the majority of press are pleased with the units and the games launched with it. The only gripe being, in general, poor load times for some games though and that\'s hardly a big gripe since load times have never been enough to suade anyone from buying a console. Here\'s some links to some really positive game impressions:
Ridge Racers:

Thanks Ryu
No thanks Ginko :p
Screw the japanese release. Of course all of those complaints might be correct but who knows what kind of thing would have to happen for some of those things to take place. On the screens i only saw a max of 3 dead spots - vs how many? Annoying yes - enough to kill the system - not even close.
The dust - didnt see too much of it.
The UMD popping out - looked like they put it under a lot of pressure.
Unless you manhandle your controller like an ape then im sure your buttons should be ok but if not i hope the problem is fixed for the US release.
If the thing does end up having defects then i can always return it.

I don\'t swing off of Sony\'s nuts so I\'ll bring the bad news with the good news. ;)
Sony\'s PSP Console Sells Out in Tokyo After Debut (Update3)
Dec. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp.\'s new PSP portable game console sold out at Tokyo electronic retailers such as Yodobashi Camera Co. and Bic Camera Co. within hours of its debut yesterday.
Yodobashi Camera sold out of the hand-held device at all 17 of its electronics outlets, said Yoshiharu Satake, a spokesman for the Tokyo-based retailer. Bic Camera ran out of the consoles at its 13 stores in Tokyo and the surrounding area by 2 p.m., said Yumi Kawahara, a spokeswoman at the company\'s headquarters.
``It\'s the most people we\'ve seen lined up for a game device in recent times,\'\' said Bic Camera\'s Kawahara, adding that the retailer didn\'t take reservations for the PSP.
Sony\'s bet that it could take on rival Nintendo Co. for some of its 95 percent market share of hand-held game market may be paying off. About 1,200 people were lined up for the PSP\'s debut outside Bic Camera\'s main downtown Tokyo outlet ahead of the store\'s 6:55 a.m. opening, said Kawahara.
``We expect this to be a big hit and for this momentum to continue,\'\' said John Yang, an equity analyst at Standard and Poor\'s in Tokyo.
Sony may start selling the PSP in the U.S. as early as January, helping it ship at least 3.5 million units of the game console by March 31 and bettering its earlier forecast of 3 million units, Yang said.
The company met its target of shipping 200,000 units of the PSP to retailers for the Dec. 12 debut, said Nanako Kato, a Tokyo- based spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment.
Sony sold 171,963 PSP consoles yesterday, Tokyo-based market researcher Media Create said in a faxed statement.
``Harsh\'\'
The PSP plays video and music as well as games such as ``Tiger Woods PGA Tour\'\' from Electronic Arts Inc.
Nintendo Co. started selling its own dual screen Nintendo DS hand-held console in Japan on Dec. 2.
Hiroaki Sakuma, a 21-year-old university student, was first in line to buy a PSP from one of Bic Camera\'s downtown outlets after waiting there since 9 p.m. the night before because he couldn\'t reserve one online.
``It\'s my first time to stand in line like this\'\' for a game console, said Sakuma ``It\'s harsh. But I had to have one.\'\'
Sony shares rose 2.1 percent to 3,870 yen as of the 3 p.m. close on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Nintendo shares gained 0.1 percent to 12,020 yen.
Meanwhile, Nintendo on Dec. 9 raised its year-end shipment forecast for its own dual-screen console, which it started selling in the U.S. on Nov. 21, to 2.8 million units from 2 million units.
Sony, the maker of the best-selling PlayStation 2 game console, said in October it broke even at its game division during the second quarter ended Sept. 30. The company has said it will sell the PSP in the U.S. by March 31.

Some games are worth noticing in that list.
Btw.Whats up with the battery life

>>>IGN PSP: Battery Journal (http://psp.ign.com/articles/572/572563p1.html)
poor load times for some games though and that\'s hardly a big gripe since load times have never been enough to suade anyone from buying a console.
You can take out that never, I\'m not fond of the idea of putting up with load times on a portable. If it were just a one time loading for each PSP game I could deal with that, it wouldn\'t be an issue. However, as of the moment, it\'s common to have 10-20 sec load times in between things like character/track selection to actual gameplay...and that\'s every time. I won\'t be buying a PSP until the load times are dealt with, or at least that the norm is below 10 seconds.
-
Heh, welcome to the life of optical media. So long as the system is disk based, there will always be load times. You accept them at home on consoles. You accept them on your PC. Accepting them with a great game on a handheld will not be any different.

I deal with them on home consoles because I\'m settled in with time to spare. I still find them annoying, even the games with the one big load.
If I had to deal with a loading time for my phone book on my cell phone I would have to find a different phone and/or service. Because it\'s a portable and because I\'m on the go. If I\'m only going to play my portable gaming machine for 15-30 minutes, which is the norm for me, then I really don\'t think it\'s cool to have sit out half of that time on loading.
-
for 15-30 minutes, which is the norm for me, then I really don\'t think it\'s cool to have sit out half of that time on loading.
dude, you are overreacting. Even if you have 10 load times in 30 mins at 15 sec, that would be roughly 2 mins. Far from "half" your playtime.
-
If there are only 10 load times...
Did you read about VC: The Chaos Tower yet? And for Ridge Racer I just can\'t imagine a 10-15 second load time going into a race then again coming back out of it.
anyway, I don\'t care for load times on any device so if they don\'t get better on the PSP then I can live without it. As it is I\'m not impressed but I\'m hoping Wipeout Pure and Tales of Eternia load times are minimal.
-
Lets say for example that I put Ridge Racer.
If it takes around 10 secs to get the game loaded,10 seconds to get to the title screen , ten seconds in car selection (if I m not mistaken it takes some seconds to move from one car to the next in the selcetion screen), 10 seconds to go to the track selection screen, 10 seconds to load the data and play the game....then you ll have to show more patience than ever.
These arent the loading times we experience in consoles if thats the case. Its worse

This morning, Reuters posted word that the PlayStation Portable has had a successful launch in Japan. Citing Sony, it seems retailers throughout Japan had almost completely sold out of PSP units on its first day of sales, with Sony shipping around 200,000 units to retailers ahead of the Sunday launch. Although the article goes on to state that Sony, who is sticking with its 500,000 unit shipping target in Japan by the end of 2004, didn\'t put forth exact figures that magazine publisher Enterbrain put out estimated figures. According to the figures, Sony sold 166,017 units on Sunday, working out ot 86% of the 193,056 units shipped. The top selling unit for the PSP were Hot Shots Golf, (67,685 units sold), Ridge Racers (57,131 units sold) and Armored Core Formula Front (11,867 units sold).

Meh. If you hate loading times that much then i guess thats just your problem then. Yes you\'ll be on the go but you will have some time. if you had to wait a minute total for loading times then it still wouldnt be a big deal as most games you rarely just pop in for 5 mins and play. Of course there are those times but personally i could deal with it.
After watching the loading time on the Ridge Racer glitchy video I can easily say that the loading was tolerable. I dont know what so many people are complaining about. Perhaps Ridge Racer isnt the worst of the worst. Either way we still have time till the US release.

Mark as me as one who thinks the DS and PSP are both just shit idea\'s. 3D on handhelds, no thanks.

Wow I guess if someone\'s tastes arent for 2D games either then they are shit as well

I know your english is not up to par, but being a complete dumbass (how is that for universal language)? I never once said that. I said I think 3D games on handhelds is a dumb idea, for many reasons, main reason being on consoles we already have camera issues, move that to a small screen and it only gets worse.
-
You said they are shit ideas for the same reasons you complain about 3D gaming in general.
You didnt even have extensive 3D gaming experience on handhelds in the past to even have an opinion
You call them shit ideas based on your personal tastes.
And if thats the offensive attitude I get thats the same attitude you ll get back if you continue like that.
-
Like I care less, there is no debating any logic with someone of your intelligence. It just simply is not possible. However, due to boredom, I will go ahead with this.
Let me quote myself.
Mark as me as one who thinks the DS and PSP are both just shit idea\'s. 3D on handhelds, no thanks.
Note the key word in that quote, the key word is "thinks" , this could also be phrased or easily noted as my opinion. Nowhere did I state that 3D gaming was the end all of gaming and that it was bad for everyone. Infact, I actually said "mark me as one thinks". Somewhere in such a simple statement, you got lost and took it as though I said anyone who liked 3D had shitty taste. Not sure where you got that, other than the fact you lack of the basic reading skills.
Do me a favour, get back to me and we\'ll debate. Just make sure your IQ and reading skills have raised above that of a mentally challenged child.
;)
-
Oh man I see you ve written a composition based on the word THINKS.Oh I see you assume more than I do too
Congrats for your "intelligence".
I d love to see how well you would have done with GREEK
Actually my IQ is decreasing everytime I talk with someone who likes to believe that his IQ is higher.
-
I\'m playing Mario 64 on my Nintendo DS. It\'s 3D. And it\'s fun. Not a fun as touching my wife\'s boobs while I\'m driving....but still fun.
-
-
I never said it wasn\'t fun, I simply said that I think 3D on a handheld is not the way to go. The camera problems will be compounded so badly.
I do tend to forget that some people cannot read the most basic of things. I guess I should cater to those simple people and break it down even more so.
:)

I see you came back. You must be a very bored man to be wasting your time with us "unintelligent people".Shows how interesting your life is?
You also suffer from paranoia. You assume too much. And I thought I was the only one.
;)
-
I do agree that 2D gaming is more or less the best for handhelds but after seeing ridge racer I think ill be alright. Plus the PSP\'s screen is a lot larger than those of GBA etc. It doesnt make much of a difference but it certainly does something.
-
I have mine reserved, I can\'t wait! 3D on a handheld might not be for everyone, but it\'s the only thing that would get me to buy one. :)
-
Hmm.. From what I\'ve been reading, initial reports of 90 minute battery life are incorrect, with the machine clocking in between 4 to 6 hours.
From InsertCredit:
Yeah, Ridge Racers lasted us just under three hours.
Then we charged the battery to full. It was totally NOT full out of the box. Then we played a combination of Minna no Golf (about four hours) and Ridge Racers (two hours) for the combined total of six hours and three minutes.
Also -- the charger cord is pretty long. The headphone jack is nice. You can use a remote and Pro Eggos on the short cord. Then . . . well. You really won\'t mind playing it at home, Aderack. I mean, granted some excellent games come out for it. The screen is just so high resolution and pretty. Everything moves well. When you\'re lying in bed and playing Armored Core with headphones on late at night -- well. It\'s a nice experience. A nicer experience than I\'ve ever had with a portable system.
I mean, I couldn\'t have the same experience with any of the Gameboys, being that I tend to like to lie in bed in complete darkness.
From IGN:
So we\'ve at last played our way through a full battery charge cycle. In case you don\'t feel like counting, the battery died after about four hours and fourty-five minutes of five different games and one hour of MP3 play. We didn\'t use the WiFi features of the system at all during this time.
Keep in mind that we avoided charging the system a number of times that we could\'ve easily plugged it in (in particular, as we slept). Unless we plan on playing games for more than five hours in a row, the battery seems like it\'ll be okay to us. Of course, for long trips, we may find ourselves picking up a spare just in case (they\'re about $40 at retail).
-
People who have played Ridge Racer for the whole battery life said it lasted between 3-4 hours. But you\'re right, initial reports were incorrect. (I can\'t find any battery journals with Wi-Fi features on)
-
IGN\'s Journal:
12:54AM: Status Report
- Battery remaining: 100%
- Full brightness time remaining: 5:49
- Low brightness time remaining: 7:35
12:54AM: Played Games
Ridge Racers, Vampire Chronicles, etc., using system speaker set to full blast and screen alternating between minimum and maximum settings (videos look better when the screen is set to minimum)
1:54AM: Stopped playing games
1:54AM: Status Report
- Battery remaining: 89%
- Full brightness time remaining: 4:52
- Low brightness time remaining: 6:21
Doing your maths, that adds up to about 5 - 6 hours, which is around about the time that posters on the Gaming-Age boards are reporting. And hopefully battery life and load times are examples of things affected by the fact that these games are rushed for launch. I wonder how 2nd/3rd generation games will go.

Depends how graphically intensive the game is. Ridge Racers is more demanding on the system than Vampire Chronicles so it\'s no wonder they are getting more life out of the battery. If you were to play Ridge Racers for the whole battery life it has been confirmed by two journals that it\'s right around 4 hours.
I wonder when Sony will tell developers it\'s okay to go past 3 million poly\'s?

Impressive. The PSP even has taste. If it doesnt like a game it spits it out

I think I may have to add this to my list of crap to get. It definitely looks impressive.

Just think if you sharpen the edge of your UMD and take it on a packed bus.... you could recreate the whole....
Gravity gun + Buzzsaw blade Vs line of headcrab zombies from Half life 2 :D.
-
Awesome idea man!!!Now I DEFINITILY want one!No, I ll buy TWO!!!!hey wait a minute.....if so many PSPs are defected....but people still want one....that could mean....you are not the first to think of it.
Now evereyone could be carrying arms a.k.a PSP and want to eagerly try it on someone and that COULD BE ME!!
*screams and searches for his G3 gun*
-
If battery is a concern to you then don\'t buy it, even if it only works for 2 hrs. on the batteries I\'m still getting one. I mean please if u play games for 6 hrs. at a time you need to get some sun! Run, jog, lift weights, get laid..get laid!
Anyways it looks amazing, I also like the prices on ebay :p
-
I think I\'m gonna put some money aside and buy it. I think I\'m gonna wait a few months for the final bugs to get worked out.
-
PSP\'s impressing me. But it\'s imho also somewhat \'flawed\' :
- UMD disc media.
The complications which that system will play a role throughout
the whole of PSP\'s life. Kind of like PS2\'s 4mb VRAM. So, not in a way it\'ll be the death of PSP\'s potential succes, but still a hurdle
to be taken by every game made for PSP.
Nintendo\'s cartridge policy is imo indeed the Ideal. Ok, a 1,5 Gb
cart would be way too expensive in PSP\'s timeframe now.
However, I had given thought to an alternative idea for a cart-based PSP ;
- PSP cart size @ 512 mb
- PSP game on that cart to fit on that cart in compressed form.
- PSP equipped with 1 Gb ( Flash ? ) memory.
Now, if the game folds out it could spread over both the cart and PSP 1Gb memory.
This would increase PSP price point a bit but it would also mean better battery life and shorter loading times. 100% shock proof and probably even more thin becuz there\'s no disc drive. Or is my idea completely absurd ?
-
absurd.
Sony hasbeen kicking the gaming wars ars since day one, they have now come out with the first disc operated hand held...they set the standards.
