Title: New pc on the way
Post by: Capcom on December 15, 2004, 09:05:05 AM
All of the recent pc purchases has encouraged me to build a new pc myself. This is what I have decided on.

looking good, all except the case imo, too flashy.

Still, congrats

great purchase.

what surprises me the most is the cost of the CPU.  $300 for this CPU must be something.  You usually gets for what you pay for.  Imagine the test benchmark where this one will blow other CPU out of the water in term of speed and performance. *me drools*...

I wonder if it will cut down the speed to encode my home video into DVD MPEG-2 because mine took 5 hours and hopefully this powerful cpu will cut it down to 1 hour....

Plan on changing out the case eventually. Was half awake when it was ordered. Will also add another gig of ram in a couple of months. I just hate spending this money at once.

As well will add a sound card. Not sure on that as of yet. Any suggestions?

I own Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum.  Its can output and record up to -106 dB.  The frequency response is great too.  from 20 Hz - 20 kHz with with about -/+.5dB.  Just make sure when you record, don\'t go pass the 0 dB where it will clip and causes distortion.

Creative Labs Soundblaster new soundcard with similiar performance that i own has drop the price tag down greatly.  Say around $50 - $150, depending on what you need...

nice rig.... pretty close to what I built a little while back.  Why did you go for the 395 eVGA when they have one (without D3) for 388?  I guess if you don\'t have doom 3 then that\'s cool.

Only issue i\'ve had with my system is my BFG 6800 GT gets a little to hot for my tastes.  I\'m averaging 53C idle & 80C @ load.  I just bought the Arctic NV Silencer 5, so that should help a bit.

you gotta post some aquamark and 3dmark scores when you get it together.  I just scored a 5202 on 3dmark05 last night

:D

Did not have doom3. My laptop was not good enough to even try to play it.

Also picked up a pci fan so hopefully that will help keep it cool.

so far doom is fairly disappointing to me, but i\'m still playing it here and there.  It\'s hard not to like a game that can run @ 1600 x 1200 without nary a hitch.  What really impresses me so far is FarCry.  It\'s really hard, and most of the vehicles and locations are pretty nice.  Plus the graphics are beautiful... so bright and colorful.

If you decided to try out farcry make sure you have Direct X 9.0c and the SM3.0 patch installed and you\'ll get full detail out of this game.

I wasn\'t impressed at first until I found the advanced tab in the graphics menu and jacked everything up to the max.  1600 x 1200 was a little laggy, but 1280 x 1024 is pretty smooth & decent to look at.

90 bucks. Suppose can\'t eat out for a few days. :(
part of the reason for that case is because it comes with a 500 watt power supply. Did not care to buy case and power supply sep right now.

Not sure on price tag. Did not bother to count it up.

It will be a great build. Let me know when it is finished, so I can stop by and we can run some benchmarks. :D

Oh and MM - the case isn\'t that ugly, I mean it could be uglier, it could be the face of your girlfriend.

;)

Very nice.

Make sure to download the nVidia 6800 tech demos here: http://www.nvidia.com/page/6800_demos.html

Nalu and the Timbury demos are like watching Toy Story being rendered on your PC. :D

just make sure that 500W psu isn\'t some generic crap that doesn\'t have the AMPS to run your 6800GT.

So how much did all of this cost?
Title: New pc on the way
Post by: Capcom on December 19, 2004, 02:56:54 PM
total cost around 1700 U.S.

Built the system with the intentions of overclocking down to the ram. Now that it is together see no real use to it. Doom 3 even runs at 70 fps.

When you\'re running games at 60+ fps. Overclocking becomes a point of "mine is bigger then yours" bullshit.
Title: New pc on the way
Post by: JBean on December 20, 2004, 07:12:31 AM
yeah it\'s all bragging rights when you overclock a top of the line rig.  I\'m running mine stock at the moment as i\'m running every game I have @ 1600 x 1200 over 60 fps (except for far cry).  So at this point, the added FPS aren\'t needed.

Post by: Lord Nicon on December 20, 2004, 02:31:29 PM
Its just nice to get over 60 because then you know when your computer starts getting old that it will still be stable in the future.

Not that i would know :(

well, our human eyes can see up to 72 frames per second, so 60 fps is sexy smooth, but a little higher won\'t bite, just sexier.

To me, beyond 75 fps isn\'t necessary, but between 60fps - 75 fps is more prefereed.

again, just my opinion.  So don\'t flame.  (me runs and hides)

human eyes DO NOT see in frames per second

anything less than 100mhz gives me a headache after a few minutes

85hz works for me.

The whole thing that newer to the party.. less informed.. people will argue is that you don\'t need the 100+fps that you see in some benchmarks.

Where as, that\'s just an average. Everybody wants 60fps at all times. There is no greater preference, nor will there ever be. When you\'re benchmarking 70fps in a game without a framerate cap.. you\'re not getting the most fluidity possible. You\'re getting as low as 20-30fps and highs in the 100\'s-200\'s. It\'s not ideal.

Extra framerate is always good. Always. Up until the point where you can max out your AF/FSAA/resolution/etc and never, ever drop below 60fps in a given game. Obviously it\'s not always worth the price of the hardware, but you know what I mean.

85hz is perfectly fine for me. We may not see in FPS, but we can notice the difference, for most its only when things are side by side we really notice.
