Title: luck was on my side today
Post by: Eiksirf on December 17, 2004, 01:21:18 PM
So I\'m driving highway Route 23 coming home from work this afternoon.

I was going maybe 60, 65 in the 55 zone and I was traveling in the fast lane. I was approaching two cars in the slow lane and was about to overtake them.

As I entered the blindspot of the first car, a blue minivan, it pulled out to pass the car ahead.

All of a sudden I had this minivan cutting me off. I had to jump on the brakes.

The minivan continued right into my lane forcing me to steer left.

My left front tire dropped off the pavement, a few inches to the grass median. As the minivan started to pull away, I steered back into my lane.

When I came back in, I lost control of the car and the back swung out to the left. I steered against the spin, but started to spin the other way.

I couldn\'t counter that spin and ended up sliding sideways, backwards off the road, back into the median. I was facing the wrong end of the highway as I slid off.

I got out pissed but the other cars kept going. Since I was in the van\'s blindspot, he probably never even saw me wipe out behind him.

I flagged the next guy to call a cop for me and had the car back in good shape to drive even before the cop showed up.

I was lucky in several ways. The first is that I kept the van from hitting me in the first place. The second is that no one was behind me when I spun out. Then when I slid off the road, I was about 3 feet from clipping a small metal rod stuck in the ground that would\'ve f\'ed up my rear fender. I also came to a stop with my rear ending up in some thick bushes. A few feet earlier and I would\'ve smashed the back end on a tree. On top of that, I wasn\'t injured, no tires lost air, no body work or under carriage was damaged, and the worst appears to be some dirt streaks and possibly a few light scratches under the rear passenger door.

Left some funky tire tracks, too. :)

Quite a ride.

Congratulations on your survival.  When I approach a bunch of slow moving vehicles in the right lane on a 2 lane road, I usually expect something like this to happen.  Sometimes I reduce speed just to give the car (the minivan in your case) every opportunity to change lanes if they want to, or at least to see me approaching.  I usually drive with my lights on during the day.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of car were you driving?  FWD or RWD?

Front.

I drive a 99 Grand Am. It has running lights, but your other advice doesn\'t fall on deaf ears.

Thanks guys. ;]

Earlier this week I was loading a trailer bound for Chicago where I work.

I was about three feet from the dock door in my forklift with the last skid when the driver took the truck from the dock to bring it to another building.

Had I been five feet farther along, I would\'ve fallen out of the building in a multi-ton forkilift. I like to believe I would\'ve bailed in time to land inside the ware house and not be crushed.

For the record, drivers should probably make sure people are done loading instead of assuming as much and blindly pulling away. The driver said my manager said "they\'re loading as we speak." He assumed a few minutes later that we must have finished.

Heh, I think next week I\'ll stay home.

All that sliding in a FWD car? Hmm... crazy. I assumed it was RWD.
Glad to know youre in good condition. There were some pretty stupid drivers out where i was today too. Not to mention i got a damn parking ticket after being 2 mins late. I swear those damn UIC parking cops sit there and wait for meters to go out.

Stupid college police.

I almost got hit twice on my way home from work today, luckily it was downtown so if I did get hit it would have been at low speed.

I see morons everyday while delivering pizzas.  You learn to live with em though.  People in minivans/SUVs that don\'t check their blind pots are the WORST.  That\'s the exact same reason I was in a crash last new year\'s eve.  Lady + SUV + cell phone + no turn signal + no blind spot check = moron.

Glad to hear you\'re ok.  Your car too. :)
