Post by: GmanJoe on December 24, 2004, 06:34:39 AM
Family time. The best of times, any time of the year. But Christmas adds a bit of that little magic. The best part about Christmas is how my happy everyone is just being together.

Hope you guys have a Merry Christmas as well.

This has got to be the best christmas ever.

This year, I got the one thing I wanted more than anything......

Another leather belt off my aunt. I don;t know why, but she always gets me belts. I have 5 now, I\'m still wearing the one she gave me in 2001.

There was a time when she only ever bought me knitted woolly jumpers with car patterns on them. She finally accepted that I had grown up, and that things like that no longer appealed to me. I haven\'t got a woolly jumper like that off her since I was 24.

Anyone want to buy a belt?

When I get home, I\'m gonna post something that I sent to all my friends. I think you guys might enjoy it....ah screw it. I wrote this up today:

Quote
To some people, Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. However, some people think the differently, that this is a time for the good will toward men, the "Christmas Spirit" if you may. It is a time where sworn enemies can come together to  laugh and play and sing and be merry. This is evident in the Christmas of 1914 during World War 1.

The war broke out with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by members of a militant group on June 28, 1914. As a result, Europe found itself in a World War where both sides figured it would be resolved and the troops would "be home by Christmas". As the two sides dug in and a stalemate occured, this was evident that this war would take a long time. The war was a propaganda war, where both sides, the Axis and Allies, would spread propaganda in hopes of making the other look like a monster. The trenches were so close, sometimes only 30 yards or less away, the two sides would yell to eachother. At some times, Germans who lived in England would ask an English soldier about a place in England and visa versa.

Winter hit, the men were delerious and cold. They had no morale and no spirit. They wished to be home for Christmas. Since the homesickness had set in, many from both sides on the homefront wanted to help their troops feel more at ease to the harsh conditions of the trenches and liven up their spirits. They were sent food, warm clothes, presents, cigarettes, etc from families and organizations within their countries.

On the German trenches, the troops tried to ease their homesickness and bring some Christmas spirit to the front. They would cut down trees and put them on the tops of the trenches and decorate them with lighted candles. The British didn\'t know what to make of this. They at first thought it was a trick and then realized that they were Christmas trees some time later. The British were ordered not to fire but keep a close eye on the German trenches to see if it  indeed was a trick. In some areas, both sides exchanged Christmas carols. This is what one source had to say:
"They finished their carol and we thought that we ought to retaliate in some way, so we sang \'The first Noël\', and when we finished that they all began clapping; and then they struck up another favourite of theirs, \'O Tannenbaum\'. And so it went on. First the Germans would sing one of their carols and then we would sing one of
ours, until when we started up \'O Come All Ye Faithful\' the Germans immediately joined in singing the same hymn to the Latin words \'Adeste Fidéles\'. And I thought, well, this was really a most extraordinary thing - two nations both singing the same carol in the middle of a
war." (Jay Winter and Blaine Baggett, The Great War: And the Shaping of the 20th Century (New York: Penguin Books, 1996) 97.).

At some points on the front, the Germans would yell for the British to come out into No Mans Land and to their trench (No Mans Land was the area on which no man would dare enter and it was riddled with shell holes, barbed wire, and dead bodies. The area between the two trenches). The British, still a bit cautious thinking it was a trick
said "No, you come over here." At some point, the representatives from both sides would come out into No Mans Land, shake hands and exchange
greetings. It was not long before other soldiers would come out from the trenches and meet the other side along with their representatives. They would meet their enemy, face to face and realize, that they are not monsters like they were told but breathing human beings just on the other side of the war. They thought like them, talked like them and were carrying out orders just like them. On Christmas Eve and Christmas day, both sides on the front agreed not to fire on eachother. Both sides even agreed to help the other bury their dead in No Mans Land, some of which were lying there since the beginning of the war. At some instances, there were joint services of the two combined enemies.

The two sides exchanged gifts. The Germans would give the British food
from their side and the British would give the Germans food and gifts
from their trenches. These things included chocolate, coffee, tea and
other miscellaneous objects. They would show pictures of their
families, shared stories and talked like they had been friends for
years. There is even a record of a soccer game in the middle of No
Mans Land between the Bedfordshire Regiment (British) and a company of
German soldiers. A member of the Bedfordshire Regiment made a
makeshift soccer ball. The game ended when the ball hit the barbed
wire and deflated.

At the end, both sides retired back to their respective trenches. One side held up a sign that said "Merry Christmas" and the other held up a sign "Thank You". Soon after, the fighting resumed.

Historically, the Christmas Truce lasted for several days. What was mentioned above was quite accurate but some of it is not known 100%. It is a touching story, showing how two sworn enemies could come together, even for a few days, and embrace eachother and learn that they really are not too different. This story is the best example of "peace on earth and good will towards men".
