So many, I cant believe it!
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&e=1&u=/ap/20041226/ap_on_re_as/indonesia_earthquake
JAKARTA, Indonesia - The world\'s most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into villages and seaside resorts across southern and southeast Asia on Sunday, killing more than 7,000 people in six countries.
[...]
In Sri Lanka, 1,000 miles west of the epicenter, more than 3,000 people were killed, the country\'s top police official said. At least 1,870 died in Indonesia, and 1,900 along the southern coasts of India. At least 198 were confirmed dead in Thailand, 42 in Malaysia and 2 in Bangladesh.
8.9 on the Richter scale...
EDIT: Now they are saying over 8 000 dead.
-
Holy shit.... this is horrible
-
that\'s a big number of death.
Remind me of last year\'s earthquake that killed 20,000 people in Iran...
-
Damn. When I first heard about this on Fark, the tag line was "Several dead" and I didn\'t bother reading.
But 8,000? That\'s terrible.
Wow.
-Dan
-
Up to 11 000 now, and it keeps on going up. :(
-
Here\'s some advice....if the waters on the beach suddenly recede by at least 60 to 100 meters, get to high ground as soon as possible.
It\'s like the ocean is pulling back so it can pound you with a huge tsunami.
-
I bet they know that now.. But you must remember Tsunamis are very rare in that area.
Some 23 000 dead now. :(
-
Over 28 000 dead is the number I have heard now.
They have started burning bodies on the beaches of Phuket.
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.expressen.se%2Fcontent%2F1%2Fc6%2F22%2F27%2F27%2F6e34547e.jpg&hash=c3b1753cdc0abd5a04812c6eb7a3377857afd833)
Picture taken of the big wave.
-
Man that shit is scary... 27,000 dead.
Is there any way to predict tidal waves like that? I know you cant predict earthquakes so I guess not.
-
Amazing news footage, people running for their lives and whatnot.
-
How do you pronounce Phuket? Is it how I want to say it?
-
Pukett , Puhkett .. Something like that, watch CNN. :p

I can understand why you\'re angry but what does this have to do with Americans or Sept 11th?
But dont even bother answering, I dont want this thread to turn into somethin else because this is more important than an arguement.
-
Not to me it isnt!

You are braindead
-
Holy crap. I can\'t believe the numbers of deaths. This is a lot of people.
-
Some are saying it will be well over 30,000 dead as the tsunami just hit East Africa\'s coast line and causing devastation there.
-
I just heard about this. My unit is sending people out there to help with the relief effort. I volunteered to go.
-
R.I.P.
-
Shit.. A guy on another forum I go to, his 11 year old cousin is missing. :(
I still cant believe so many people died because of this. And WHY didn’t Sir Lanka or India get a warning? The earthquake was at 2 in the morning (Swedish time), the wave hit Sir Lanka and India around 7 in the morning, why didn’t they get warned? The seismologists must have understood what was going on even if they didn’t have a warning system?
-
45,000 and rising.
-
This is pretty sad. DO you think some of these poor countries are going to spike their death toll to try and get more aid money? I wouldn\'t put it past them. Pretty amazing. I wonder what the toll would be on a wave like that if it hit the states?

America would have warning systems, I doubt it would have taken so many lifes.
Btw. it seems they noticed the earthquake but they did not warn the resorts, because they were scared of scaring off all the tourists. I hope they hang if its true.
Even if they didnt warn Thailand, they still could have warned Sir Lanka, India and Bangladesh!
-
It could still happen to America and europe
http://perdurabo10.tripod.com/id1032.html
-
If it does, the people in Holland better run for the hills.
Here is an animation of the progress of the tsunami.

-
Damn. This really is a tragedy. So many dead that didn\'t need to die. You have to feel bad for these third world countries. I wonder if they will ever bounce back up.
-
bounce back up? They were living in huts.

That\'s my point.
I heard you can\'t dig a hole in Sri Lanka (its illegal) because if you dig a hole, you can find valuable gems. A teacher told me that. I think he might be full of crap.
-
It\'s official. Myself and 182 Ways are going to help out in with relief efforts. We should be there for at least a month.
-
you guys rock... that\'s all I have to say
good luck out there
-
They tell me we\'re leaving within the week. If they let me bring the laptop from work I\'ll keep you guys posted. Oh and we\'re going to Utapao.....wherever that is. I think its Thailand.
-
Someone told me a lot of the people are dying not from the tsunami but from all the bacteria of the corpses.

Wow your going to Utapao. It is in Thailand. Thats where the American base is that my father was on in the Vietnam War. For the past few years hes been wanting to go back there for a visit. He is glad he didnt now. I wonder did the tsunami hit Utapao? I was going to go with him :(
This reminds me of the Bibical flood. Just shows you how powerful and devestating water can be. I knew a worst disaster then 9/11 was going to happen soon. I have had nightmares at night thinking of what disasters were going to happen next after 9/11. I just didnt know it was going to be this bad, or anything like this. The bad part is another disaster is going to happen again. I remember a year ago or so a large earthquake hit an ancient city and killed 30,000+. I wonder if or when one that big will hit America. I\'ve heard from someone that California could fall underwater.
100,000 people. That number is so high its hard for me to comprehend.
This is the worst event I\'ve ever seen in my life
-
Earthquakes belong to the axis of evil.
But seriously, this is bound to happen again. It\'s nature. Still a tragedy though.
-
Seems Thailand is FINALLY going to get that warning system in place, a bit too late you sobs, dont you think?
182 Ways and i_killed_ur_dog are my two heros for the day, I wish I could do more than just sit here.
Especially Sri Lanka and Indonesia are in big need of help, but also Thailand when it comes to recovering the thousands of dead bodies (2000-3000 dead in Khao Lak alone).
-
Here is something I saw on CNN last night.
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.traveljournals.net%2Fexplore%2Fmaps%2Fcamorta-island-india-map-m2905588-zoom-x-20-large.jpg&hash=ed7ba3b09e945af102beb28b4809a27df57b7562)
Camorta Island, very close to the earthquakes epicentre.
The water has washed very far inland, destroying the island as you can see. Notice the villages?
The island has been smashed into two parts, three villages must have been totally destroyed.

y\'know to put this in another perspective me and some others complain about the death of amer soldiers in iraq...but this tragedy is on a whole other scale.. over 84,000 lives lost in one big swoop...truly sad..it\'s good to see the int\'l community come together to help these countries out...
-
What a catastrophe... These death toll numbers are just staggeringly high, and don\'t seem to be slowing down. I think its a good change that countries are just working together towards a global effort.
-
http://www.cnn.com puts the toll at 134,000
earlier on a site today I saw a vid of this older couple making there way to some guy holding his hand out to grab them, then they were hit by debris and swept away :(
its pretty un-imaginable to know what those people feel, I mean I live in central Canada so we don\'t get many tsunamis around here..
but the thought of being with a girlfriend/mom & dad or any friends or family on vactation and having the water pull them from you is pretty unbearable.
these are some vids without a news edit.

I saw that one too, I think they found the man but the woman was missing. :(

I can\'t this world today.. This is the most tragic event since 9/11 and that was only three 2 years ago. What\'s next? Can\'t even imagine..

Yea but this wasn\'t man made or anything. It was a natural disaster. But yes, this is very very scary and I feel terrible for those who have died and do not have any homes anymore. I think I am going to donate a few bucks to the red cross when they come by my house again if it is for that cause.
-
Aftershocks. AWESOME. This is exactly what they needed.
Mother Nature Sucks. The toll is up to 150 grand...it\'s like my entire city going up in smoke, almost (I live in a town of 225 thousand, the capital of Nebraska)...when will it stop? Ugh.
See Yuz.
-
I saw on yahoo some of the people are "balking" at the aid.
-
This really does make me feel hopeless here in America. I wish I could go there and help in the relief efforts and help them clean up. But what can I do. I\'m 18, a senior in high school and heading off to college in several months. But damn, I just want to be there to help these people out. If someone gives me the address of a place to donate money to this cause specifically, tell me.

The first bodies came home today at 03:27 on a C130 Hercules.
The king Carl XVI Gustav, queen and their children, prime minister and the archbishop were there.

They were carried off the plane by men from the Home Guard.
These are just the first few of perhaps 1000 people coming home. :(

How many Swedes are missing or dead? I heard the Americans may have lost about 6000 but I\'m not certain.
-
6000? Wow, I didnt think it were that many. CNN rarely mentions the US figures. :(
Sweden has 1 903 missing, some 60 confirmed dead, its the biggest loss of life we\'ve ever had in modern time. The second largest was the Estonia sinking (501).
-
Right now there are 36 U.S. dead with 3,000 unaccounted for, according to CNN.

I went by the estimates from last weekend. I knew it would change as more Americans showed up.
-
Most interesting thing throughout this is the small amount of wildlife dead. They say it was some sort of sixth sense that they could sense the danger and warned eachother and got to higher ground. Also a girl who learned about tsunami\'s in school saw the water line being drawn back and knew it was coming and wanred the people on the beach and probably saved a lot of lives. A little light in this disaster.
-
yeah,
i heard a story from my mother that elephants in India run to high ground mountain before the tsunami started.
These elephants are trained to take tourists around the beach.
But like hour before it started,
these elephants started to act strange and crying and started to pack people on top of them and started running up the mountain.
One elephant was chained to the ground pulled out the chain with him and started running up the hill. As soon as he got to the top, the water almost got him...
-
Anyone still talking about the Tsunami? They just upped the death toll another 50k. Damn.
-
Still on the news every day.
225k, geez. Unbelievable numbers.
-
I agree... definitely the greatest catastrophe of my lifetime. My dorm section is having a party this Friday, and we\'re raising money for victims. Should be sweet getting trashed for a good cause.
-
Hey, you can write half of the booze money off to the IRS.
Well, you\'re a student so you don\'t pay taxes. Maybe I\'ll come up, booze it up and write off the airline ticket and the booze. WOOHOO!!!
-
This disaster blows the big one. Damn earthquakes!! :(
-
Mankind 0, Mother Nature 1
It\'s Times like this that we realize how helpless we are to natural disasters and the aftermath that comes with it.
R.I.P. to all those that died.
