EA Nabs ESPN as 15-Year Exclusive
First the NFL, now the most recognized brand in sports media.
By David Adams
January 17, 2005 - With thundering force, Electronic Arts may have just swung the final punch to sports rival SEGA: the gaming giant just announced it has entered a 15-year exclusive licensing deal with ESPN.
Under the agreement, EA has exclusive video game rights to ESPN-branded print, telecast, and online content -- in addition to other ESPN media properties. The agreement covers all gaming platforms -- consoles, PC, handhelds, and wireless, and will begin in 2006, upon completion of ESPN\'s current licensing commitments.
The agreement most clearly affects Take Two and SEGA, which jointly publish a series of ESPN-licensed sports titles. The companies are still reeling from EA\'s announcement last month that it had acquired exclusive video game rights to NFL properties -- a direct challenge to SEGA\'s ESPN NFL franchise.
Obviously, the challenge is now doubled.

a wee bit late there D.H. ....;)

Can i still get out my pitch fork and torches ?
-
im hoping they mix the good things of ESPN with madden.
Madden/ESPN gameplay, ESPN tackling, Madden franchise, Madden\'s upper body graphics, ESPN\'s everything else graphics, how players run in madden (cant stand how they run in ESPN), etc.

I\'ve heard rumours of EA looking at aquiring VC/Take-Two, so there\'s an off chance that we\'ll basically be getting VC\'s sports games under the EA name.
But now to the facts, I\'m actually pleased with this. EA is going to have to drop the Madden name eventually, so this is the smartest and also sneakiest way they could have rebranded possible. I congratulate their continued good business sense.

concerning the rumors you\'ve heard...that will be the ONLY way i pick up another copy of EA\'s football....

VVE (damaged by Planetside)
Bah, but it seems FRANCE is taking a stance against EA, god bless those Frenchmen, they are getting pretty good at standing up to stop the idiots. :)
I hope DICE decides not to agree to EAs new terms also. Hmm you know what would be cool? Government owned developers, there is lots of money to be made if you are good at making games, Dice and Starbreeze are two good developers.
Battlefield 2 - Developed by DICE , Published by SAP
I might just suggest that. ;) ;)

Great business sense for EA is going to seriously screw up Sega and its employees.
Sega struggles to survive and last year\'s ESPN initiative was a real ray of light for them.
Now it seems they\'ve just helped build up their competitor\'s next brand.
EA sucks.

So sad that EA gets the credit for games they dont own too.
Just like Burnout3.
Developers and talents=criterion
Publisher=EA bleh
The game has EA written all over it.The word Criterion appears only for a few seconds before the title screen. But who gets unfairly the credit?EA!The most uncreative overrated games company in the world.
I hope they shope their stupid Need For Speed series up their ass. They suck at racing games. They dont desrvre reckognition for Burnout

*starts to cry
-
I\'ve said it all along about EA :o
I wouldn\'t be surprised if they would cause the
3rd crash of the (console) videogames industry
(ok, so that might be a slight exaggeration...)
-
Unicorn- Was it any less unfair when Acclaim was the ones taking credit for Burnout? And hey... Hot Pursuit was cool. At least I thought it was.
-
Its amazing how wound up you guys get over this.

You didn\'t expect this from a message board full of dorks? *hides in corner and cries*

I just think this is getting crazy.
Have you guys heard the new improvements on MVP baseball?
- Updated Rosters
- Create-A-Stadium
- "Hitters Eye" system
- Slightly different ball physics
- Some new Animations
Does that even qualify as a new game? I mean, the only REAL work put into this game is the Hitters Eye system, which is honestly an alright gameplay addition... but this is what EA does -WITH- compitition, so what will they do now with the obvious attempts to destroy the only real challenge to their demographic, which was Sega\'s ESPN franchise.
-
this is indeed one of the signs of the next coming apocalypse.
in gaming.. "sniff" :crying:
-
I can sense it. I don\'t know when or where or how, but EA is going to be burned down to the ground. There has to be someone out there plotting EA\'s demise.
-
I\'m just hoping this turns out to be good.
Think about it, this could actually push companies to take huge steps in innovation.
I hope sega does something crazy. And by Crazy I mean, spend a long long time making an insane game that will blow anything EA has ever done out of the ****ing water.
Go sega. :)

All that will do is just hype the next the game for EA.

Well said QuDDus, well said :)

EA is definately going a little to far here, competition is good for not only consumers but the industry as a whole. Buying eveything only hurts everyone
-
After looking back on this and how everyone including myself has been bitching all over the net sense EA started buying up everything. I come to the conclusion if you love football there is no way you can go 5-10 years without playing a football game.
Come next madden or whatever they decide to call it. People will buy it and flock because simply you have no other choice. I am already saving my money.

well EA\'s hip swinging attitude caused (the soon to be former) ESPN games to really reevaluate how they do things both in and out of games. their pricing really screwed with EA last year and their game innovation has been pretty good, while EA\'s has been meh. this years MLB 2k5 looks great - i\'m especially looking forward to the new baserunning - but i like to think they would not be where they were today without the monster that is EA rooting from the sidelines.
-
Oddly, I look to Midway\'s Blitz to be the most fresh football title next year.
I may even pick it up. Haven\'t got a football game since 2001.

here here, well said, hillpeople.
EA basically pushed espn (or whoever it is now) to work harder and the result is very evident. Lower prices, better games, etc.
mlb 2k5 looks very very awesome and i for one will be picking it up the day it drops (or shortly thereafter). i actually got excited when it saw the previews for 2k5, whereas when i finally saw mvp, it was pretty yawnworthy. just more of the same from the sports game assembley line at EA.
in any case i say if ea\'s tactics are to blame for the creation of a game that looks as good as MLB 2k5- we all oughta send EA a thank you note and maybe some flowers... :)

Take-Two bought out Sega\'s Visual Concepts studio so they do the 2K games by themselves now.
They also struck a deal with the MLBPA that will keep real baseball players out of the next MVP Baseball.
Take-Two is Rockstar\'s parent company.

I agree.

NFL Blitz is definitely my favorite football game. Something about body-slamming the opposing team just seems like so much fun to me. :D
-
Blitz is like NFL streets for me. Fun as hell playing with some friends but boring as hell playing alone.
-
Here\'s something I just wrote up about Blitz. (No NFL in the title anymore.)
Midway’s “NFL Blitz” series is one of over-the-top violence, and as it moves forward with the “Blitz” franchise, Midway’s Chief Marketing Officer Steve Allison said, “Our game will (now) include all the gameplay and fun the NFL won’t allow.”
The next Blitz title will feature more hits, bigger celebrations and a season mode with behind-the-scenes antics including front-office politics and off-the-field altercations between players.
That\'s basically the gist of what\'s been announced so far.

Awesome...I gotta pick this one up. ;)

I know what you mean...

yeah, blitz is more recreational. really in the arcade tradition, not as much consoles. i like football games but i end up playing baseball games longer for some reason. hits me in the longer attention span spot. like serious fpses.
all the gameplay tweaks to mlb 2k5 do sound pretty sweet. interested to see about the kzone pitching, and the new steal controls. all in all, it seems like maybe the ea thing will have some positive results if it creates some pockets of innovation.
-
true true, blitz is fun. i\'m not a huge football fan but i\'ve played it at my brother\'s house and i must confess it\'s usually a pretty good time.
at the very least it can be said that football\'s gotten a little more attention when it come sto video games, wheras baseball\'s kind of gotten passed over in recent years. which is why it does my heart good to see a game like mlb 2k5 hitting the shelves, because it seems like there\'s a little something new under the sun for baseball fans. 2k5 is the first baseball game in a while that i\'ve been excited about, because with the upgrades from 04 and the added features, it looks like it\'s going to be a good time.
Now the only problem is waiting for it to come out. Because when I want to play a game, I want to play it NOW and not wait two more weeks. But wait I shall... :(
-
i wouldn\'t be suprised....E.A. is nothing but a bunch of pussies...what would it be like if we only had yugos to drive around in? yea that\'s what it\'s comin to in the gaming industry...pathetic...read...
