Sony just filed a patent recently regarding some technical aspects of the PSP and PS3.
Some interesting information has been leaked by the U.S. Patent Office regarding the PS3\'s future capabilities with Sony\'s own PSP handheld. Sony has recently filed a patent number 20040266529 (http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&d=PG01&p=1&S1=20040266529.PGNR.&OS=DN/20040266529&RS=DN/20040266529) [December 2004], which shows the PS3 and PSP will have wireless connectivity, and will be able to share content such as games, movies and music.
Some information from the patent outlines some key details:
"Broadly speaking, the present invention fills these needs by providing a system, a method, and a portable game device. The method of the system and portable game devices enables execution of a video game at a base computing device and wirelessly communicates processed data to a portable game device."
"In operation 252, the selected game is executed on the server, and the data representing processed game instructions, are communicated to define video and audio signals on the portable entertainment device. User input signals are also exchanged between the server and the portable entertainment device to interactively use the game during a gaming session. In operation 254, the video and audio data that is representative of the video game play is presented on the portable entertainment device, and processed data is continually streamed to the portable entertainment device to provide seamless interactive game play."
"In another embodiment, the local home user will be able to access their home server 102 to gain access to their games or media database that includes games that were previously purchased, or access a game that is currently being executed or to be executed on the game console 103. In each case, main processing of the video game program will occur at a location that is remote from the portable game device 108a. In this manner, the user of the portable game device 108a will have a rich content experience without having to purchase expensive hardware that may be bulky or consume an unnecessary amount of battery power."
In the third paragraph, in my interpretation, tells that the PS3 will be able to send game signals over a network to a PSP device, allowing for PS3 games to be played on the PSP. The PS3 game console will take most of the processing work, with little or no effort on the PSP\'s part. This could all be done within range of the WiFi signal, allowing the user to play PS3 games around the house, without having to move the PS3 around.
This information tells us that Sony had even bigger plans for the PSP from the start. It will be feature-rich, and deeply involved with the PS3. If you haven\'t found that one last excuse to buy the PSP, this is it. We\'ll keep you updated when more details emerge. You can click below for the entire patent.

WTF?
With oher words my PSP could be displaying a PS3 game via a network?HOW?The PSP isnt strong enough and we are talking about huge bandwidth exchange via the two devices
-
I think it\'ll basically display the game on the PSP screen, and the PSP will act as a wireless controller. The PS3 is the only thing doing the actual work. It\'s a very cool idea. I think Sony has talked about 30MB/sec network transfers, but I\'m not certain of the details.
-
30 MBytes/sec transfer? wow...

That is correct. You can do this today with a PC and a PDA. I\'ve seen HL2 running on a PDA.

awesome :)

Pretty cool, cant wait for the PSP to be released. Im hoping the firmware update with the web-browser will be out right after the NA launch.
-
Just think of future possibilities that could open for game designers. It would be pretty amazing if you could be playing an online game and have some kind of interaction with your PSP. IE: Bring more of a reality like feeling to SOCOM III by giving you viewable radar or specific maps on your PSP while playing on your PS3. I think thats more than just a gimmick. There could be some real potential Game altering features by incorperating a PSP into normal Playstation console gameplay.
I could see a metal gear solid 4 lovin the use of a protable device that communicates with the playstation.
-
With other words what you mean is use the PSP as a second PS3 screen something similar with the DS? :)
-
I don\'t think that\'s what the patent is saying at all. It doesn\'t say anything like that.
-
Yeah I know but I was refering to MPTheory\'s post.He is refering to possibilities :)
-
I guess we really don\'t know what they have in store for us. ;) We\'ll have to wait and see what\'s up.

Kind of, yeah. Basically, instead of having your top view map or radar on your televistion screen, you just look at your psp. I dont know how cool it would really be, but I wouldnt mind having the chance to see what it was like.
-
All the little kids on punishment will turn their ps3\'s on and play in their rooms.
Its neat to have extra features like this but how much ill be using them idk. Im guessing you cant go far from where the console is.
Meh
-
I don\'t know the range of WiFi, but I think it would be pretty far. Of course, the farther away you get, the less information you receive from the signal source. But this is next-gen we\'re talking about, I\'m sure Sony will have some improved WiFi capabilites.
-
communication via sattelite? :p

In the next year or so?
I doubt the technology will be that far progressed. When it comes to consoles, we dont necissarily get cutting edge per se. Impressive things are seen in the console market but correct me if im wrong on the whole cutting edge thing because i cant think of a damn thing thats really stood strong and impressive for quite some time.
Maybe its just my mood but thats what im thinking.

If I say something stupid then slap me but don\'t current 802.11g compliant devices transmit at 54mbps? My wireless router is upstairs but it can transmit all the way to the basement just fine.
-
54mbit/sec = 6.75 Mbytes/sec?
-
permission to slap granted. If Sony can really pull that speed off wirelessly for videogames then hopefully the PC industry will soon follow.
-
there are 108 mbit/sec devices for pc as well - got router at home and the new pre-n is out as well which is supposed to be faster altho im not sure really how much

It\'s not that great. GBA already does that kind of thing with GCN.
It\'s neat. Still no better idea for it than multiplayer football, though.
They should include a poker game that works that way...

54mbit/sec = 6.75 Mbytes/sec?
No, it\'s 11MB/sec you crackfiend.
-
Crackfiends are also $2 whores. ;)

Not sure what metrics you\'re using but in my book, 8 bits still == 1 Byte.
Therefore, 54Mbps = 6.75MBps ;)
And no, Sony won\'t magically improve wireless speeds. Expect them to stick to existing standards...
-
I can\'t believe I missed this last few posts of this thread.
I guess that shows the true color of EviscerationX and GmanJoe.

Ok, so 30mbytes/sec is totally out of the question. You rumor fiends.
-

What are you smoking? You want to die or something? I know where you post!! ;) :)
I guess I was just misinformed. But that true colors comment was quite stupid.
-
So,
you are saying that not only were you misinformed about how many Mbytes there are on 54 Mbits/sec. You are also misinformed about 30 Mbytes/sec? Not sure where you get that number from to begin with.
If you ask me, I say it probably requires about 10 Mbytes to transfer the ps3 to psp. 3x less than your 30 Mbytes...
-
I don\'t know what you\'re getting at, but back to the topic. Damn...
-
Let me break it down like this:
Paul HATES it when someone contradicts him. I have a couple of friends like that. It\'s annoying at times when they end up being right, since they shove it in your face, but they\'re still cool. ;)
-
Plus he was referencing other information to me when it wasn\'t what I said in the first place.
I have friends like that too. It gets old quick. Especially when you admit you\'re wrong and they keep bringing it up. Those filthy whores!! :) *bastards*

Well, your way back previous post said that you heard Sony is working on network transfer of 30 MB/sec. So i was wow, that\'s quite fast.
Then, later, thx said about 54 Mbits/sec speed wireless transfer.
And I loves math, so i wrote 54 mbits = 6.75 Mbytes?
I didn\'t say nothing more or nothing less about that. Then all of a sudden, you just jump in and called me crackfiend and I don\'t know where you come up with 11 MB = 54 Mbits...and also, I am not sure where you got the 30 Mbytes/sec wireless transfer speed from either.
I hate being falsely accused and misunderstood. When I was about 5 or 6, I was being beaten for something I didn\'t do and I kept screaming that I didn\'t do it, and that person didn\'t believe me and kept beating me and blah blah blah. So as a child growing up, i hated it and become very defensive when someone falsedly accused me. its like one of those natural defenses that came out of me in case of danger or something...
thx is probably right too, i kinda acts like a jerk say for instance when i hear someone giving out wrong information and that person act it like he was giving out facts when he wasn\'t and I couldn\'t help it and try to straighten it up...but i try not to do that unless that person is being really rude and unfair especially at me.
-
I am not sure where you got the 30 Mbytes/sec wireless transfer speed from either.
I don\'t think that statement has to do with the wireless transfer, but about broadband capabilites. I don\'t remember where I read the article, but it was talking about Sony\'s future online plans. I have no idea what they\'re doing at this point.
And I\'m sorry about your childhood. I pretty much had the same exact thing happen to me, and about ten times worse. So I know where you\'re coming from. So just chilll out, man. ;)
-
Whatever. I think that\'s what you really meant to say on page 1. Either way whether what you said it was true or not, how would you feel if someone call you names and you that person act like he was right when he came up with a fake answer.
I would be amaze if you are acts like nothing happen and you aren\'t at all upset. Because I was upset. But its all good now.
-
I hope it\'s all good, because I was just kidding with you. :) I\'m always sarcastic.
-
*rolleyes* sure you are.

Paul2 I just talked to EvX on aim and he said you smell like poop in real life.
I thought you guys made up, why would you say something like that EvX?
-
is that so?
I guess EvX is pissed that he got busted. Especially his position as a moderator. I knows what it feels like being proven wrong, but for him as a moderator...probably couldn\'t take it.
-
I\'ve never talked with any people from this message board on AIM.
"Paul2 I just talked to EvX on aim and he said you smell like poop in real life."
^^^^
You couldn\'t tell that was a joke?

I\'m taking it just fine, thanks.
I guess we\'ll never get back to the topic...

BTW Paul2, you shouldn\'t take these guys seriously. I suppose EviX was just trying to be funny when he called you a crackfiend, I wouldn\'t worry about it. :)
-
yeah,
i am kinda overemphazise there. I need to chill out when someone calls me name and try to take the situation less personal next times...
-
Nobody hates anyone around here...you should know that by now. ;)

Hmmm... :sconf:, Did someone edit my post? Because I remember writing, "I need to "cool down" when someone calls me name....
But now, its said "chill out"?....hmmm...

Lol, are you sure? I dunno why anyone would do that. In any case it would have to be an administrator, because if a mod does it, it\'d say so in the post. But if the meaning\'s the same, it probably doesn\'t matter. :D
-
Can\'t even remember, so i am not sure. But yeah, if the meaning is the same, its cool. Just curious, that\'s all.
