human form within an enviroment, there is a small movement here at my college.  It\'s just one of those things that fits in with a design school.  I\'ve also heard of it called freerunning.  Le Parkour is the frenchie version.

"Parkour" must be French for "resisting arrest"

The most fitting name for this... err... "sport" in my opinion is "urban freerunning".

I\'ve been doing it for ages and finally it got a name. I was an active traceur (= a person who does parkour) last summer before I moved away from my home town because of uni studies. Now just a couple of days ago I found out that our university actually sponsors a local parkour club, and they\'re allowed to train in the gymnastics section of the local sports multiplex during winter seasons. Which is just DREAMY. I just went out and did some vaults to freshen up before showing up there later today. And it\'s 4am. Sick. And this is the only time of day (night?) I dare go out to practice with my nunchuks out in the open... some people have a problem with swingy things.

Weird thing is, I\'ve never hurt myself or seen anyone else get badly injured while PKing (some scrapes here\'n\'there of course). Quite nothing like monkey vaulting a fence, grapping a post, swinging around it and dropping 9 feet to a perfect roll on some soft grass... ahh, summer can\'t come fast enough...

*plain weird*

Which is beneficial for both parties, since you apparently have a clue about what we aren\'t talking about! Maybe we\'ll learn something from each other, us sisters and brothers.

We\'s talking about havin\' some fun in the sun. Rollin\' in the hay like, enjoyin\' it to the max, drinking Sprunk while waiting for things to come... our way, or just venturing out into the great unknown to find inspiration for pointless bullsh*t posts like this one while perspirating like a horny japanese businessman digging deep into the dank depths of his pockets in a desperate attempt to cough up enough spare to buy a pair of used knickers from the vending machine in their company lobby!

That, is the essence of life, and of love, and all that comes in between. Like baloney. You can\'t beat a sandwich like that!!! Or you can, but it\'s hardly a fair fight now is it, tough guy. Pick on someone smaller that yourself.

*kicks a flip and flips out while landing on a dove in mid-flight, striking a pose that would make Joe show respect*

*still snickers at the Sprunk ads in San Andreas*

Tell us wtf it means so when someone at the office mentions it we can act all smart and knowledgeable, thus continuing our super status of been there, read that ultra net-nerd.

Who won\'t admit it\'s great getting an attachment from your circle of friends only to tell them "Yea I\'ve already seen that."

Freely translated "parkour" means something like "the art of movement", fancy, eh. The term was coined by some french youngsters rather recently, but the idea is timeless. The basic idea is to just move, from point A to point B if you like, without minding the obstacles but overcoming them in any way you see fit. Climb over or run on walls, vault over obstacles, sideflip down stairs, anything you want while trying to maintain your "flow", eg. keeping yourself advancing from one move to another with as much fluidity as your body and mind allow. Of course every traceur has their own style and perhaps ideology concerning parkour, it\'s not an exact science how you go about it.

It\'s a nice free pick-up-and-play pastime if you\'re up for it. And very good excercise to boot. Albeit risky once you feel the need to pull off more exotic stunts...

Even Finland has its own Parkour Association now. Sadly, I moved just in time to not feature in their 2004 trailer (http://virtual20.nebula.fi/%7Ewebtilakarkkolainen/SPY/official_spy_04_mpg.mpg).

Questions?

downloading your link right now.  BTW, quite amazes at how you define parkour or freerunning.

I just look at the size and :surprised.  48 Mbytes.  This is going to take a while.  Esp 56k modem user like me.  But I will finish downloading it eventually.

So, while its still downloading.  How long does it take you to get the hang of it when you do "freerunning"?  Does that means you know martial arts?  Can you whoops someone\'s ass when they bully you?

ah, gotcha.  I usually just walk and then when something gets in my way, I step to either the left or the right.  It kind of depends really.  I\'ll go left if that is the easier route.  But then sometimes the easier route is to the right.  So then I make a right.

LOL^^^.

BTW, I am still downloading and I am about 70% complete.  I think that website should consider a much better codecs to save more bandwidth.

Anyway,

i found this link: Free Running (Parkour) (http://www.le-parkour.com/davidbelle.avi)  several days ago and I thought it was pretty interesting.

this clip is only about 12.9 Mbytes.  So it should take less time to download.  There is this Enimen song in it, so turn off the volume if you don\'t like it and play a different song/music which i finally did while watching the clip again.

I know what Hawke means. My free interpretation is that it\'s like trying to do a reallife high speed PLATFORM game.

kind of like Sonic the Hedgehog. No, basically it doesn\'t have anything to do with martial arts.

The roof running/jumping from the movie Crouching Tiger hidden dragon also has that kind of flow. Of course, that is beyond realistic.

Starting parkour is as easy as slipping into your running shoes and going outside. Of course previous experience in gymnastics, martial arts or any other dynamic sport help heaps, but it isn\'t necessary. I\'ve personally done aikido for a number of years, which helps with rolls and landings. Study the basics (http://www.urbanfreeflow.co.uk/fundamentals/fundamentals.htm) and start carefully. Doing a flashy vault over the first railing you see and making a colourful faceplant on the pavement is bad, mmkay.

Parkour has absolutely nothing to do with kicking other people\'s asses. I mostly see it as a way to find my own limits and having fun with likeminded people. If someone gives you trouble, you can use parkour to effectively escape, sure :)

Never thought of it that way Knotter, but yeah, it\'s a kind of real life platform game. More like Prince of Persia (minus the spikes, blades and fighting, unless you want them) than Sonic, but anyways.

Many parkour videos have some horrible music, most, actually. Contemporary metal rock shite. The local team (Concept of Dash) that I officially joined today has some good choices, including Monty Python songs and classical music. Though they often resort to using the same sort of music that is now generally thought to "fit" the parkour mindset. It\'s not an aggressive enough sport to warrant Slipknot on every other video, really... just IMHO.

And the training session at the gymnastics arena was something out of this world. You can build your own obstacles, you have a dozen trampolines, vault spots all over the place, bouncy floors... madness! Absolutely lovely. I finally mastered some new vaults (over wide obstacles) and learned to do decent wall runs instead of just bouncing off right away.

I was just flinging around my yo-yo (yes, I have überweird hobbies), and thought if I could somehow combine parkour and yo-yos! Hmm, I\'ll hone up my skills on both fronts and see if I can come up with something.

BTW,

just finish downloading your clip this morning and was watching it.  The first half, most of the stunts were basics.  then the 2nd half of the clip, the stunts started to get very interesting and the music started to change for the better.  I actually like the 2nd music.  I got hook into it as I watch the stunts getting more fancy and creative.

hawke,
How old were you when you first learned these moves?  And how long does it takes you?  Does ages matter?  It\'s harder to learn these stunts for adults than kids?

Oh hell I can\'t do half the stuff these guys do. Most of them are almost pro gymnasts or capoeiristas and such to begin with. I still consider myself a very basic traceur. But it doesn\'t matter, I\'m having fun as it is, and it\'s just going to get better.

I\'ve always loved bouncing around the place, but I actively started running last summer. So I could say I started at age 23. As with any sport, the earlier you begin, the more set you are for the future. Kids might learn faster, are more reckless and don\'t have the height and body mass slowing them down, so it\'s a bit easier for them. But it\'s all up to you. Some vaults I learned on the very first try, some I still shy away from. And I know it\'s mostly in my head, I have the bounce and the skills, but there\'s something unnatural about going over obstacles with you back to your running direction... and I still haven\'t learned even the simplest flips (except a frontflip from a trampoline and a weak front handspring on flat land).

Learning the moves really depends on the practicioner him/herself. Many of the obstacles are psychological, but it goes without saying it\'s physically rather demanding. You\'re not expected to directly follow other peoples moves and combos but rather "find your way" (oo, getting all deep here). I love jumping over stuff and doing vaults, others like flips more, others just climb all over the place. It\'s a bit pick\'n\'mix. ("Sheeyeet, I ain\'t trying that... oo that looks dandy!") I came up with a vault (it\'s weird, you run diagonally up to a railing, or other obstacle, plant you hand as if going over, but only swing your trailing leg over the obstacle and back over to the side where you started from) myself last summer Some people were intrigued by it earlier today and we just started elaborating on the basic movement.

Which brings me to a big point: doing it with other people is immensely more gratifying than just going at it all by yourself: The more the merrier (yes, the sentence is built this way for your perverse amusement).

I didn\'t really answer any questions there, now did I, dang.

Looks to me like a bunch of punk kids who don\'t know how to use a freaking door or a path.  They\'d rather jump over your fence or walk over your bushes.  :ghey:  dang, where\'s that smiley.

Respecting other people\'s property is a high priority to people who take their parkour seriously. No need to get into trouble when just having fun. Of course as with any sport, there are people who just lack common sense...

Thank you, I feel young again! 23 and someone calling me a punk kid, wow. And a lemming! I always wanted to be a stopper. "Nuh-uh, none shall pass, sorry, that way to your death!"

This reminds me of some crap my friends and I used to do a while back. The only difference was that we derived the things we did from skateboarding/blading and so we had soap shoes to grind/slide down things.

We used to call it freestyle walking. *shrugs*

As dumb as it looks, i really wish i was fit enough to do all of that.
