Post by: videoholic on February 07, 2005, 02:54:48 PM
OK, besides fellacio, what do you guys do in your spare time?  I\'ve been working on a new desk lately.  I\'ve finished everything but the legs.  Going to go by the steel place tomorrow hopefully and see what they have.  I want to get 2-3 inch pipe for the legs.  Unless I find something better.

I\'ll just be happy to get my garage back.

Do you 2 live together?

Those pics look like they were taken in the same room.

2 guys, alone, in their garage, playing with their wood......

No further comment needed.

Only joking, I have absolutely no skill in woodworking whatsoever, though it\'s something I\'ve often wanted to try out.

Both the desk and the clock look well made, I only wish I could do it.

If I ever tried to make something like that, one way or another, I\'d end up burning my house down, even though there might be not flammables involved at all.

Hell, I can even burn water.

;)

I\'ve spent less than 30 bucks so far.  The desk top is made out of Mahogany and the side rails are oak.  The oak I got from old pallets.  I just planed them down and bammo, nice oak trim pieces for free.

Nice looking clock.  Is that something you do often or is this the first clock?  I\'ve got quite a few things around the house that either I made or my dad made.  My dad has an amazing workshop with all the right tools.  I made this piece at home, but I could have done it in half the time if I did it over there.

I\'ll take a pic later when it\'s in place.  THe funky looking piece is for the keyboard.  That\'s the shape of the keyboard so I figured I\'d mimick it.

Man, looking at that pic, my garage is a disaster.  oye.

Video games are still my thing. If I had shoes on, maybe I\'d go out and take a pic of the NES I installed in my car.

My other thing is writing.

So I write about video games.

Again, I\'d show a photo but now I\'m just too lazy to fiddle with the camera, heh.

mm, you have a nice clock.

That looks as if it\'s going to be a sweet looking desk.

I collect Batman figures and stuff like that. I\'m also a big fan of Calvin and Hobbes and I\'m working on a short animation for my Computer Science class which features them both!

Haha, thanks :D

I actually didn\'t think much of this one until I started getting positive feedback on it. That dream sequence is one I actually had, and it\'s what inspired this  (I pictured the city, and it looked to be in the style of old detective comics... if you look at the Tracer Bullet skits Bill Watterson did for Calvin and Hobbes, you\'re seeing basically what I see).

I do have a definite idea where this story is going, and what the dreams mean... I would like more time to be able to write though. Nice to know I have another fan however :)

You are officially the coolest member in this boards. Anybody that uses Watterson\'s works as means for inspiration deserves all admiration and glamour as a writer! I love those Tracer Bullet skits. They were sensational, my favorite was when Tracer used his intuitive skills to solve a math problem. Greatness.

On the other hand, your politics blow! ;)

Sweet. I\'m in a photography class and I\'m enjoying it very much. I\'m having much trouble adjusting the stupid aperture and crap according to the light outside.

Any hints?
How about shutter speed, how should that be adjusted?

I\'m doing black and white photography by the way.

Just save your money and buy the digital rebel.  You can get it with lens now for about 700 bucks and it does plenty.

Aperature and it\'s relationship to shutter speed is what gives you depth of field.  You can have an aperature match up well with a shutter speed and then as you open up the aperature you drop your shutter speed accordingly.  THis will begin to blur the background more and more.

Also the more lens you use the more depth of field you get.

Whenever I shoot interviews when I could I would always get 10-20 feet away from the subject.  I\'d then light it dimly so I could open the iris all the way, then bammo, blurry as hell background even only a few feet behind the subject.

If you want everything crystal clear however, shut the iris and go for a long exposure.

That\'s also how you get the star pattern on lights.  Night scenes I lock it down and go for a 30 second exposure.  You get nice long flares on the lights.

Also, a good tip for when you are doing low light still stuff, use either a remote trigger, or use the timer.  No matter how still you think you were when you clicked it, you\'ll see it.  The timer is great and it\'s free.  No touchy the camera.

Not sure your question on shutter speeds.

I dont know what happened to my hobbies. They just went on hiatus for a long time.

I used to draw, play sports (basketball and soccer), Videogames (more than i do now), make music etc. etc.

Now the only things i guess are watching anime, playing Initial D (arcade), and Drifting (powersliding) in my car in lots with my friends. Other than that i cant think of too many.

- Fooling around with yo-yo\'s, nunchuks, sticks, anything I can spin around endangering my own health.

- Playing videogames and videogame music on piano (needs to work on own music for a change). I\'m hell bent on learning to play all of the Final Fantasy Piano Collections...

- Playing videogames and piano with my girlfriend and just playing with my girlfriend. She plays the flute, so we make a nice couple, eh? It\'s a dream of ours to someday master playing some argentinian tangos (especially Piazzolla\'s) together. I\'m also working on writing some arrangements for video game music for piano & flute, which, if it works out, would be really nice.

- Aikido, + some other misc. martial arts depending on what I feel like doing.

- Parkour (outside during summers, inside castle walls during winter)

- Reading different kinds of english dictionaries, working on my vocabulary, writing stupid stuff. (I\'m an english major at the university so...)

- Playing with myself.

Yeah, I was thinking about that as well. But I\'d want the black version. But today I checked prices for 10D (mostly for fun) and to my surprise it costs exactly the same as a black Digital Rebel. Only drawback is that it doesn\'t come with a lens, but I figured I could buy a 2nd hand lens to start out with.

Any thoughts? I like how the 10D is easier to customize and has more features than the DRebel (without firmware hack at least). Also, it\'s a metal body, not plastic. Argh... what to do, what to do. :)

To further expand... I\'d really like the option to use the EF-S lenses as well, but only DRebel and 20D supports those. :(

My wallet says 300D, my brain says 10D and my heart says 20D. :D

Only thing I don\'t like about my camera is no thumb wheel.  It has little buttons instead.  WIth the firm ware hack you have virtually the same camera.

The case feel isn\'t as nice as the more expensive model, but I\'d personally rather take the extra few hundred and put it into a longer lens.

To me it was plenty of camera at 750 bucks to justify not spending over a grand for the more professional model.

One major difference and don\'t know if it effects you is the 10D has better burst rates for taking multiple shots quickly.  I think it does 8.  Not sure about that.  I also think the time between the shots is quicker.  Mine only takes 4 or 5 and there is about 3/4 of a second between shots.  No biggie, just not sure if you were into that.

well I built myself a new desk upstairs in my office.  6 feet wide, 4 feet deep.  The trim is 10 layers of thin oak and mahogany.

behind the wall I have a ventilation system for my speakers and the computer.  I have 4" pipes going from each speaker and computer into a box with 3 12v fans in it.  The fans have temp sensors so they run at 5v at one temp and 12v at a higher temp.  Draws the heat right out of the room.
