Title: WMP problem.
Post by: fastson on February 22, 2005, 06:08:06 AM
Having a problem with Windows Media Player, I use it to watch Xvid videos, as you probably know sometimes these movies are encoded with AC3 sound, aka surround sound. WMP seems to have a problem with this, when I play movies with surround sound (it does not matter if its a Xvid or a DVD) the centre is always silent, I cant hear any dialogue but the music and other effects are played in the other speakers.

I\'ve looked through the Setup numerous of times but cant find a setting for surround sound.

Of course I can use Media Player Classic or WinDVD, but its still annoying that WMP is not working properly! :)

Help anyone?  :shy:

Thanks.

I\'m pretty sure that xvid is a hacked windows codec so it only makes sense to me that it doesnt work

xvid is actually an open-source derivative of mpeg-4, nothing illegal about that.  It\'s only illegal if you download the movies like a cheap monkey whore.

First of all we need to know which audio decoder are you using?  WMP has to refer to some codec to understand what AC3 means, even if it means just passing the bitstream.

And Zoom Player > WMP.  ZP was pretty much built for things like this.

Under (WMP->Tools->Settings->DVD->Advanced) "ffshow audio" it says.

Codecs
AC3 - liba52
DTS - libdts
AAC - libfaad2

If that is what you mean THX.
Note I have the same problem when playing DVD movies with WMP.

ffdshow for audio?  meh I\'d just buy the nvidia decoder (http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html) and enjoy the best video and no hassle audio.

Are you passing the audio through s/pdif to be decoded by your receiver or using your sound card\'s 5.1 analog jacks?

No I use the three different cables, the soundcard decodes for me. I have checked the setting and its not set to S/PDIF..

I normally use WinDVD6 but sometimes when Im just browsing through the movie to grab a picture or something I use WMP because it starts up faster. :D

The fact that is does not work like it should is bugging me, thats why I want to fix it. :)
