Title: Computer rebooting
Post by: GigaShadow on February 22, 2005, 07:34:28 AM
Put my wifes computer together 6 months ago:

AMD XP 2800+
Soyo KT600 1.0 Plus Mobo
2 512mb Kingston Value Ram PC 3200
SATA 80 GB WD HD
ATI 9700 Pro

All of a sudden her computer just keeps rebooting at the windows splash screen.  It loads up and looks like it is going to go to the desktop and then it reboots - endlessly.  No virues or spyware - check it regularly and she doesn\'t use it that much unless playing WoW.

Tried to reinstall windows, but everytime I try and install the SATA driver I get the blue screen.  Pulled out the SATA and went with a new IDE drive.  Was working ok and then I noticed the HD making a clunking sound occasionally and it boots up very slowly.  I would think this is a HD gone bad issue, but combined with the SATA problem I am not sure... anyone have a guess?  I am thinking the mobo is defective due to the SATA controller not functioning properly and now the IDE controller could be going.

sata\'s are just a bitch to set windows up on in the first place
computer rebooting could be a short on the mobo or a heat issue

Not if u build a windows install disc that has the SATA drivers already inbuilt.  Nice and easy that way.

could be a lot of things, hell it could ever be a deffective power supply.  If you have extra parts around or another computer just start changing peices around until you find the culprit

Changed her HD out with one I had lying around - its an IDE drive and seems to be working fine.
