THE MESSAGE MACHINE: How the Government Makes News; Under Bush, a New Age of Prepackaged News
By DAVID BARSTOW AND ROBIN STEIN; ANNE E. KORNBLUT CONTRIBUTED REPORTING FOR THIS ARTICLE. (NYT) 6032 words
Late Edition - Final , Section 1 , Page 1 , Column 2
It is the kind of TV news coverage every president ... \'\'Thank you, Bush. Thank you, U.S.A.,\'\' a jubilant Iraqi-American told a camera crew in Kansas City for a segment about reaction to the fall of Baghdad. A second report told of \'\'another success\'\' in the Bush administration\'s \'\'drive to...

Most of you already know this by now, at least, I hope you do. Basically, the Bush administration is creating fake "reports" on various issues such as Medicaid and the War on Iraq. The tapes are sent to various news stations (WITHOUT MARKING OF AFFILIATION) to be played on the air, in hopes of breaking through "liberal news media" and telling the other side of the story.
This is dispicable. This is digusting. Most importantly, this is propaganda. Not only does this undermine journalism at its core, but it disregards it entirely. I think this is yet another step to create a sense of mistrust within the American press for the American people. Hopefully we will see it as just another devious tactic of the liar in office, instead.

Hello last week...
What news is it creating out of Iraq that is fake? This story is nothing...
Before you go on about journalism, what about Jason Blair and the NYT and Dan Rather and 60 Minutes? Funny you weren\'t around to mention those then.

Before you go on about journalism, what about Jason Blair and the NYT and Dan Rather and 60 Minutes? Funny you weren\'t around to mention those then.
So what does it matter if it\'s from last week? It\'s still happening and it\'s still wrong.
I don\'t understand your parallel between these fabricated news stories and Jason Blair or Dan Rather.
Jason Blair (Stephen Glass, etc.) wrote false articles, but the reason wasn\'t to push for a certain cause i.e. support of Medicaid or Iraq sentiment. Blair lied in his articles for his own personal benefit, to make a name for himself and deal with the stressors of being a journalist working under the pressure of a major newspaper.
Dan Rather simply aired a story that was not fit to air. His failure was due to poor (and flagging) journalistic skills.
The Bush administration is pushing their agenda through the rose-colored tint of these fake news reports that do not say they are fake. Often, as in the case of a news report showcasing Iraqi-American relations in the U.S., the reports are STAGED. Interview responses are PRE-WRITTEN. The mood of the piece is slanted and the truth is obscured.
During Bush\'s first term more than $200 million was spent on this process. If the Bush administration is so sure its policies are the best policies, then why do you need a $200 million plus propaganda campaign to back it up?
-
Ditto.
To Republicans EVERYTHING is the evil works of those damn Democrats. Except of course, their false reporters that used to work at a gay porn site asking Bush questions that make him blush from his own greatness.
-
Just admit it - you two are bitter that Bush\'s plans for the Middle East are starting to work. Oh the horror... like I said this post is a non story. Go over to DU - they are all parroting the same thing, yet not surprisingly no one else cares.
-
Giga, I think you are missing the point here.
The focus of this issue is not about Bush\'s plan for the Middle East. It is about stirring up a false sense of support in the Bush administration\'s policies in America, by illegitimate means. Essentially, it is our United States government, bypassing and exploiting the "watch dog" of the American press, LYING to the U.S. people. You don\'t consider this a worthy story?
Oh wait, you have become used to the fact that lies from the Bush administration are acceptable.
I care about this issue. I am sure many others - besides those at DU - care as well. I don\'t see how this is an issue for Democrats or Republicans. It is an issue about the preservation of the people\'s voice - journalism.
-
No you are missing the point. Bush has a majority of support for the ongoing situation in Iraq - wasn\'t that decided on November 4th or weren\'t you paying attention?
By claiming the US Government lies and not journalists is hypocritical. Once again I point out the whole 60 Minutes National Guard story which CBS was going to air on the eve of the election to try and influence its outcome. You referring to the American press as being a "watchdog" or an unbiased bastion of justice is laughable.
You and your fellow moonbats over at DU can rant about this all you want, but the fact is the public doesn\'t care. How can you say this isn\'t a politically motivated issue when you say this in your original post:
Hopefully we will see it as just another devious tactic of the liar in office, instead.
Do you really think this story matters to the administration? To the public in general?

lol @ Giga
Wow.

So now we come to the combination of the two: Moonbat. This is the human personification of the two terms described above. It is a human whose cerebral cortex has turned to silly putty causing him or her to mentally slide down the evolutionary ladder to the level of a winged rat who is influenced by the moon and wants to suck your blood. Also affectionately known as a "Democrat".
These creatures spend their days hanging from the ceiling (or relaxing in their saunas in Beverly Hills) and by night, when the moon exerts its lunatic influence upon their two remaining brain cells, they wander the streets babbling insanities and looking for their next victim. They usually first appear about sundown on NBC, CBS and ABC News as "sound bites" (see above regarding fangs). Then they quickly gather in upscale neighborhoods like The Hamptons, Martha\'s Vineyard, San Francisco and Hollywood where they plot their devious, totally mad plans to take over the world.
Poor pitiful creatures. They have no clue that we are on to them. Their twisted, demented little brains simply cannot grasp the fact they are doomed to extinction. The legends of vampires have slowly died out and thanks to modern psychotherapy (and electrical shock treatments) these miserable throwbacks to an earlier dark era in human history are slowly being eliminated (or in the case of San Francisco, simply allowed to "mate" in a manner that will not allow them to reproduce).

Regarding Moonbats and DU...
Here is a post by one of them on DU about a Superbowl Conspiracy:
Superbowl Conspiracy?
everythingsxen (1000+ posts)
Firstly, I did not watch the Superbowl; the accusations I am about to make are based upon conjecture and hearsay. I do know football and McNabb\'s record, I just didn\'t care enough to watch.
So, if I have anything wrong here, please let me know.
Did the Eagles throw the game?
The Declaration of Independence was read during the Fox pregame show.
There was an inordinate number of overly patriotic commercials.
The game itself was between the "Patriots" and the "Eagles"
A coworker told me that he watched the game (a conservative, who dislikes *) and he said that the coach of the Patriots was enraged when the Eagles scored, even after the Patriots were significantly ahead; as though the Eagles were not supposed to score. He also said that the Eagles QB was doing great in the first half and then suddenly was doing worse than he had done all season.
I find this bit of jingoism most disturbing. As far as I know the DoI has never been read during a football game. This article has great points about other bits of propaganda in the game. http://www.asianweek.com/2002_02_08/sports_superbowl.ht...
See the above link.
I think it\'s "amazing" that the game was played between the two most "patriotic" teams in football and somehow the red, white and blue "Patriots" won.
Personally think this game was supposed to be the administrations crowning moment in sports. Sort of like the \'38 Olympics for Hitler.
Break out your tin foil hats! Another favorite - The Kennedy Assassination Poll!!!!
Poll question: Who do you think was behind the JFK assassination?Poll result (111 votes)
Lee Harvey Oswald (14 votes, 13%) Vote
Jack Ruby (1 votes, 1%) Vote

The Republican Party (1 votes, 1%) Vote

Bottom line, Giga:
If a Democratic President had produced these fake news reports, you\'d be screaming bloody murder. Since it was a Republican President, it\'s A-OK with you.
I challenge you to tell me that is not true. I would find this whole story repulsive no matter which president was found guilty. You need to get some perspective, dude.

Wrong. I wouldn\'t care. Every administration does this to some degree and it is niave to expect otherwise.
A Democratic President recently lied under oath, but I didn\'t care about that either. In the grand scheme of things - events like this and like what Clinton went through don\'t matter. You need to get off your socialist horse and wise up to how the world really revolves.
-
Oh... OK.. so according to you, Clinton should not have been impeached, and that whole witch hunt was a waste of taxpayer dollars?????
Can I quote you on that? LOL. :D
-
Yes you can. I was never in favor of his impeachment. It was a total waste of money and time.
-
OK, if you stick to this position that\'s fine with me.
However you cannot complain about "propaganda" or using taxpayer dollars to market an agenda and influence public opinion ever again, since you let Bush off the hook for it.
My standards are a little higher than yours apparently.
-
Unfortunately working in government I know how things work and thats the reality of the situation. Call me a realist.

If stuff like this doesn\'t matter, then what does? The Schiavo Case? You seem to think THAT is an important issue but when it comes to the governments manipulation of the media you act like it is a nonissue. That is ridiculous. You act like you would say the same thing if it were a Democratic administration when we ALL know you would not.
You have done it before. When a Democrat does something you are up in arms but when it is pointed out that the Repubs have done the same thing you ignore it. You really have NO credibility when it comes to political discussion. No matter what the issue is we can count on you spouting republican talking points and Mystiq spouting far left propaganda without fail. It is crazy. Pull your head out of Bush\'s ass FOR ONCE and admit that this is not cool. The fact that it has happened before does not give the Bush administration a pass.

yep..this is true..but to be fair we all know giga\'s stance in the political forum..he\'s republican..so it\'s only fair to say that he would do such things...i consider myself a dem but if like i stated a million times already i flet bush was the stronger prez besides kerry..."shrugs" i mean we all stand for something right? either dem or republican or a little of both....

Really? Give me a past example. You obviously know nothing about politics and how everything from the Federal government to local governments operate. There has been no manipulation of the media to the extent you think there has. Tell me what this has caused? What negative effect has it had? It is a nonissue. Comparing the Shiavo case with this is mixing apples and oranges. One involves politics, the other involves morality and the law.

All you do is make blind accusations and never back any of your dribble up with facts - I would even go as far to say you are more of an idiot than Mystiq - not that I hold him in any high regard, but at least he attempts to inject some kind of fact into a discussion, yet you blindly rant on about me and GWB. I know more about politics and the political process than you can ever hope to learn and just because I disagree with your short sighted view I am labeled by you to have "NO crediblity". Ironically, I have heard this from you before... I am beginning to believe it is your only form of a counter argument.

Another blanket statement that you are completely wrong on. There are plenty of issues I don\'t agree with Bush on, but no one has brought them up. His wanting to ease immigration policy being one that comes to mind. This is such a non story - they have even stopped discussing it on a lot of anti Bush websites. Maybe it sounds like Republican talking points because I am a Republican? :stick: ya think? I don\'t need to look any "talking points" up as they are my own thoughts. Hard to believe isn\'t it?
To think that any administration isn\'t going to try and spread positive news is unrealistic and shows your lack of real world knowledge. I hate to break it to you, but Utopia doesn\'t exist and if this were Clinton I would bet money you wouldn\'t even be talking about it, just as I wouldn\'t.

Sorry to break it to you, but this probably wouldn\'t have happened if Clinton were in office. That\'s why you\'re so safe in saying that you wouldn\'t care if a Democratic President did this. I think you know that a Democratic President probably wouldn\'t do it. Where I see Republicans politicans as more manipulative and mean spirited than Democrats, you probably see them as simply more "competitive" or something like that. Is it possible you see this behavior as a virtue?

That is a willing suspension of disbelief. How do you know this didn\'t happen when Clinton was in office? You don\'t. Personally I don\'t care if it did. As for your characterization of Republicans, I can think of a quite a few labels that I could lump all Democrats into, but that would be getting really off topic.

Yes, we can\'t ALL be insiders like those working for the Department of Transportation.
If you REALLY think that bringing in fake reporters to lob the Administration softball questions, releasing government news reports(without mentioning it is from the government), and paying writers/reporters/TV personalities to talk favorably about administration policies is NOT manipulation then there is nothing more to be discussed here.
Yes, you are right. One involves politics and the other morality and law. The Shiavo case reeks of political influence when it shouldn\'t and manipulation of the media/public opinion is a moral and legal issue but it is being ignored. Good call on that.

What is funny is that I generally ALWAYS back up my statements. It is just that you always manage to find some random issue with the source/writer that you think gives you enough reason to ignore the information altogether. You do it all the time. The reason you have heard this from me before is because it is true. I don\'t tell OTHER people they have no credibility, when arguing, so maybe it is just you.

Everything you say sounds like Republican talking points because 9/10 they ARE Republican talking points. When you stop posting the exact same information and arguments as your favorite pundits then I\'ll believe you are not just spouting off talking points.

Oh Noooos! One illegitmate reporter out of how many? Like this guy was the only source of news coming out of the White House!?!? This the problem with liberals they think most Americans are stupid and have to be told by media what is factual and non factual. God forbid they make up their own minds. You either know the facts or you don\'t.
Also when did it become a crime to report administration policies in a favorable light? What if he was paid to report them in a negative light by someone like George Soros? Can\'t happen? Ask Tom Delay about it.

Let me get this straight in order for you to believe I am not just rehashing "talking points" I will have to oppose the views and policies of the political party I belong to? It couldn\'t be that I share these same views could it? That couldn\'t possibly be the reason I am conservative as opposed to being a flaming liberal? :stick:

Inaccurate information according to who? The liberals? I find it amusing that you and other libs blame Bush for something that the news stations should have caught themselves - they were unmarked tapes after all were they not? Who is at fault for airing the information?

Most Americans ARE stupid. If you think they aren\'t then you just might be in that group. Americans generally take the information presented to them by their government and news media as fact. When the information presented to them has been distorted, filtered, distorted, and filtered again the general public tends to have a distorted and filtered view of the facts.
ONE illegitimate reporter in the White House press corps is TOO MANY. It doesn\'t matter if there were 1000 other legitimate reporters there. It is the idea that the administration is actually went out of its way to put an illegitimate reporter there in the first place that should have everyone up in arms.

The tapes were marked and delivered by government officals. Some stations reported that they were done by the government while most did not. The reports talked about how much better the administrations pharmaceutical drug policy was and how much money seniors would save when all of the facts showed an entirely different picture. The news stations are partially at fault for not saying they were done by government officials but that doesn\'t take the administration off the hook for distorting the information as presented.

This is such a non story and I am only going to respond to the above. Could this be why it is no longer a front page story? Maybe you are too dense to realize it.
Nope - there is no difference. It all ends up being reported and presented the same way.

First of all I\'d like to thank Gigashadow for commandeering yet another thread, this time to (throughly) define for us what a "moonbat" is and for his response to everything but the topic at hand.
I\'m beginning to see his strategy:
Read topic>pick out any semblance of resistance to the Bush administration>label it "liberal" and/or "democrat">attack being liberal and/or democrat.
Giga, you have offered us many things thus far, except direct answers to questions posed by myself and others earlier. If you care to, answer the following. Bonus points if you don\'t use the afformentioned choice words of yours.
1) Is the development and unaffiliated deployment of the Bush administration\'s fake news reports (scripted responses, staged reactions) wrong? Is right to have our government, or any government, lie to its people in this manner?
2) Is the Bush administration spending $200 million during the first term a worthy amount to be spending on the propagation of their policies?
3) Are these fake news reports damaging to American journalism?

Someone fix Giga\'s lollerskates and call him a roflcoppter out of here!

I seriously doubt that Bush had a clue about what the war in Iraq was going to cause. Please, democracy in the middle east is still far off. Those people are living in a lifestyle from the past and it\'s going to take alot more than the toppling of a government to change it.
Back on topic. This administration has broken so deep into the political spectrum that the word democracy is losing its meaning fast. Giga, what was decided on November 4th was that Americans are willing to take a piss on the face as long as it is related to Christianity.
Gas prices are going up. Nobody can stop OPEC and this year is predicted to be the peak of production, after this production goes down which means rise in prices...again. The oligopoly that is OPEC has the world in its grasp.
It is sad that the only way for a President to try to gain support or at the very least, gain some credibility, has to resort to fooling Americans by posting up propaganda that make themselves sound like credible news story. The GOP pounced on Dan Rather an his accusations, they destroyed the guy. Now they are responsible for doing it, and doing it in a more discrete, criminal and vicious way.
For Spring Break I went to London. Thanks to the financial crisis that this country is going thru, a freaking pound is TWO DOLLARS. The dollar is a piece of useless paper in Europe now. You\'re right Giga, we shouldn\'t be like Europe. We\'ll end up peaceful, respected and with twice as much money.

No Dan Rather ruined himself. Get over it. He tried to influence an election with a bogus story. He made the decision - no one else did. Criminal??

For Spring Break I went to London. Thanks to the financial crisis that this country is going thru, a freaking pound is TWO DOLLARS. The dollar is a piece of useless paper in Europe now. You\'re right Giga, we shouldn\'t be like Europe. We\'ll end up peaceful, respected and with twice as much money.
Who paid for this? Us rich white people who pay taxes? Oh and I lived in Europe 25 years ago and the pound was 2 to 1 then also.
The dollar is useless you say? Good, then maybe you and your illegal family will sneak into England and leave us alone. Word of warning though - the Atlantic is not the Rio Grande.

You really try hard NOT to come off as a racist bastard did you know that?
I didn\'t cross the Rio Grande by the way. My parents didn\'t either. So, I guess I rained on your parade, sucker.
And don\'t turn try to mix apples with oranges. I said the dollar is useless in EUROPE moron. IN EUROPE. Because you can\'t buy ANYTHING IN EUROPE without paying TWICE AS MUCH FOR IT. That makes it USELESS.
A tantrum says the fellow that blames the Democrats everytime Bush sneezes. The same person that calls Democrats "moonbats" and believe that people opposing the shitty goverment we have now are the real provocation of the terrorist. The same person that thinks the federal government should be allowed to intervene in state matters. The same person that can only a person patriotic as long as they have a US flag TOGETHER with a W on their bumper. No W. Not real.
It\'s not a tantrum. You probably just didn\'t want to hear the reports of all of those poll that people voted for Bush b/c of "moral" issues. Hello, why do you think that the Religious side of the government believes Bush owes them? There was even an article on Time.
And I admit that was off-topic. I guess I can say that the commercials the White House is putting out, instead of being cold facts, are a mirage of illusions meant to conceal the real problems that this country is going through. The degradation of the dollar around the world, the Euro, a new coin, being worth more than a dollar?! C\'mon!
Influence the election? He presented what he believed to be facts. He didn\'t do his job and fact checked everything but at the time they were facts. The White House is just putting on infomercials selling their issues to the people.
Back in the good days, the government tried to convince and earn the will of the people. Not sell it.

Back of a truck, climbing through a hole in the fence or stumbling through the desert - they are all illegal.

You really need to read my posts again if you think I support the federal government intervening on state matters. Your wild accusation is based on the Schiavo case, which is not political and is a symptom of judicial tyranny.

I am not going to teach you economics, but whenver you take a number of countries and dissolve their currency to make 1 standard currency and then continue to incorporate more countries into a "union" of sorts the stronger it gets. Your insinuation that Bush has caused the degradation of the dollar is absurd since it didn\'t just magically happen. It takes time and it started long before Bush was in office.

They weren\'t planning on running that on the eve of the election just for the hell of it were they? Please STFU. I was wrong about BS - you really are the biggest idiot on this board when it comes to critical thinking.

No actually. My parents didn\'t even do that.
Yes. I said pound. But the Euro is the same scenario. The continous amount of spending that Greenspan has for so long warned about is likely to be a huge cause of the degradation.
http://www.economist.com/finance/displaystory.cfm?story_id=3445928
Since mid-October the dollar has fallen by around 7% against the other main currencies, hitting a new all-time low against the euro and a five-year low against the yen. The dollar has lost a total of 35% against the euro since early 2002; but it has fallen by a more modest 17% against a broad basket of currencies, including the Chinese yuan, which is pegged to the greenback.
The deficit is at the heart of this issue. Various economists have put forward at least four arguments why the deficit does not matter and the dollar\'s reserve status is safe. First, the deficit is a sign of America\'s economic might, not a symptom of weakness. Second, sluggish demand overseas is a big cause of the deficit, so it is reversible. Third, the deficit exists largely because of multinationals\' overseas subsidiaries. And fourth, central-bank demand for dollars creates, in effect, a stable economic system. It is not difficult to demolish each argument in turn.
And you can read the rest on the link.
Giga, don\'t worry about me. My critical thinking skills are fine. And I thought it was the Dems that were famous for their conspiracy theories. You make yourself seem too smart to be such a moron.
I\'ll stop ranting the day you stop also.

Can you not stay on topic? Bush never put out any information on the dollar versus the Euro. This is nothing but a random diatribe by you about Bush because you have nothing to add to the conversation.
Even the article acknowledges that various economists have put together at least four arguments why the deficit doesn\'t matter - this articles intent was to try and counter these. You posting this has nothing to do with the topic.
Like I said critical thinking skills. If you even bothered to look at the graph in the article it shows the dollar has been falling since the Carter era.
Lastly, I would just like to point out your claims of the "good old days" are empty and it really has me wondering whose words you are actually typing due to the fact you weren\'t even around during the Reagan administration.
By the way you never answered my question as to how you went to London? Somehow I doubt you even went at all... and yes you have been caught in lies here before.
Regardless this thread has gone off in a direction it should not have. Thanks Miss tiq.
